I too have found the X mound of dirt in several locations.
All are on or near the North Beach.
Mostly its been on the Beach itself but once it was in the Gnoll Cave :)

I have delivered a letter to a halfling named Blerton Blumble from his cousin Matsy in Antonica. He seemed very distraught over her news and has asked me to find Grandpa Blumble who is reputed to have a tendency to get lost in the Thundering Steppes region, particularly at the beaches north of the docks where he apparently searches for pirates.
I have found Grandpa Blumble in a cave on the beaches north of the docks.
I have informed Blerton Blumble that I have found Grandpa Blumble. He also gave me a letter to deliver to Jacques.I have helped Blerton Blumble find Grandpa Blumble in a pirate den on the beach north of the docks. He also gave me a letter to deliver to the mailman, Jacques.

I just did this quest, and found that the mound of dirt (the "x") not at the waypoint I got when I accepted the quest, nor at any waypoint I found on the internet. I was just about to give up, when I discovered the dirt mound on a location further up on the beach, among the gnolls. It's not so hard to see so I think it might be better to just look around a bit than to just use waypoints.

I think it might be random, as it was a different place when I did the quest on another character.

It's basically a small dirt mound, but when you mouseover it, the descriptoin appears as "X" - that's what they're referring to.
The instance you should select to complete this quest is "Blumble's Halfing Hole". It's a fairly short instance - just a bunch of trio 20--- mobs and a single 20+ mob.
Just be aware that when you zone out, you might run into the gnolls surrounding the instance entrance.

Well, I found it last night finally. It's not an 'X' at all. It's a rock located just to the right as you come to the beach (from the farm w/ undead).

I was walking around the locs mentioned, and then suddenly I get a waypoint, and a glowing path... I followed it, and it came to the middle of the beach and there was NOTHING there, no "X", no sand pile, no rock, nothing targetable at all! I tried camping out and then went back in a minute later, and still no luck... nothing there at all, brought me to the same location. So I will try again in a day or two and see if my luck changes...

lv 27 paladin, killed everything in the caves.... and no grandpa.... any ideas anyone??

I am level 27 and Nothing was greyed out to me so be preparied to fight until maybe level 28

Be careful in the tunnels. There is an intoxicated pirate that is a ^ 20. peek around the corners, when you do see him, just hug the wall to the left, and he won't come after you. Everything else in the cave is defeatable lower lvl 20 and you do not have to fight your way back out.

It isn't an "X" in the sand, it is a rock. I found it at -86.65, -24.24, -847.07.

No, there was no problem with killing the mobs when I did it just a few minutes ago. Everything died quite nicely, although being wounded and fighting the Intoxicated Pirate (normal spawn, but average level 20, rather than the usual weak groups of 3 levels 20s) almost killed me. And to Kailee, traps are random, it doesn't have to do with the zone. Still sucks that it killed you though!

Beware everyone, as of 13/6/05, both the 2 solo instances seemed to be bugged, I couldnt hurt anything in the zone.

Unless the instanced zone changes randomly, the spot has changed because I found the rock on the beach labeled X at loc -105, -24, -826. Hope this helps.

Do not be discouraged if the entrance is not at one of the locations mentioned here, as this entrance moves but is always (I believe) on the same beach. And to make things even easier, when I completed this quest recently, I actually received a waypoint path that led me to it. I zoned in and all was L20 - so was all grey to me at L25 and I simply ran to the end of the path and spoke with Grandpa for the update. I do not know if it was a glitch, but the person with whom I was grouped could not zone in with me - it seems to be either a solo instance or this is a bug. We were required to go separately to Grandpa, which was harder for her as she had to fight her way through.

Maybe the X spot moves onthe beach (dunno) but I found at -108, -23, -959. It looks like a mound of dirt.

The rock disappeared in the last patch. I don't know if they moved it or removed it, but it was there a week ago. Anyone know where it went to?

This quest is given by Blerton Blumble after you complete the "Watch Your Step in the Thundering Steppes, Part 1" quest. You must find his grandfather.

Grandpa can be found at the very end of the small dungeon at 835.54, -19.64, 1069.6 . Grandpa will give you a quest to find Grandma who is in Nektulos. This is a separate sub-quest and found under related quests as Search For Grandma Blumble
After speaking to grandpa you can return to Blerton to get the return mail and your choice of rewards.
Return this mail to Jacques to open up the Watch Your Step in the Thundering Steppes, Part 2 quest.
