This quest is given by Elowys Laceleaf at the docks in the Thundering Steppes.
She is attempting to complete a collection but seems to be missing a butterfly wing. She asks you to find one for her. You can forage these or buy them from brokers. They are foraged in the lower level zones near Qeynos.
When you bring it to her though she complains that it is no good and asks you to bring her a different one.
After bringing her the replacement she'll ask you for a different butterfly wing.
The reward is a small collector's pouch. This then opens up the Desperately Seeking Moths quest (see related quests).
Note: You must bring these one at a time and cannot have the others in your inventory when you do the turn in. If you get there and you've got more than one, try selling the ones you don't need right now to a vendor, then buying them back after the turn-in.

Elowys Laceleaf in the Thundering Steppes is in a familiar dilemma: she cannot complete her butterfly collection. She's asked me if I can help her out by bringing her some and she's willing to pay for them, too. Sounds like a good deal to me!
I've found what Elowys needed.I found the items Elowys needed to complete her collection, though it sounds like she's going to start collecting other items as well. Some folks never learn!

If you already have the butterflies in your inventory before activating this quest, then you will not receive the quest update when you move it to your personal inventory nor when you examine the butterfly. Fortunately, to get the quest update, just place it in and then take it out of your consignment system.

I had the same type of butterflies requested as Coriel. Maybe have changed so it's not random butterflies. I used to be able to get striped and spotted butterflies in Oakmyst and Forest Ruins but it seems that since they added shell and feather quests I am gettting nothing but plain butterflies. Not sure if they made it rarer or if they changed the location of the butterflies. Either way...i bought my first 2 sets of butterflies on broker, but the spotted yellow is going for 1+ plat!!! There is no way I am paying that price...twice. Think I am deleting the quest...just not worth it. Good luck everyone!

the yellow spotted butterfly is indeed damned expensive (atm: none available at the freeport broker, 24g at the qenyos broker) - thus i didn't finish the quest (yet).

If you already have the butterflies and need the quest to update you can put the butterflies in your shared bank, then get an alt to mail them to you.
I sent all butterflies, moths and ants to myself in a seperate mail each. The mail box is then just a short run from Laceleaf, she tells you what she needs you go to the mailbox and get it.

As of 2:30pm(EST-US) 5/23 quest was bugged. Was able to give 2nd to her but she would not acknowledge I had the 3rd one. Sent report couldn't wait for reply though.

I am currently having trouble initiating the quest with the npc. She only allows me to reply that

I bet you have to have previously completed collection quests and turned them in to Marvin Standos in North Qeynos. I am a betrayer from Freeport and I am able to get the quest.

Is this quest affected by doing the betrayal. I did the betrayal and when i talk to the npc all she does is say "I can't believe how difficult collecting is! Have you ever tried it?" and the ONLY response that I have available is "Collecting thins is a waste of time." Did i do something wrong or is this glitched???

Apparently with the new patch the butterflys etc are consumed. Tried to run a friend through all the bags quests and it ate the first butterfly

This quest gets you a 10 slot bag. Then leads to a 12 (moth I think) and then to a 14 (Ants I think)
You can buy all the ants moths and butterflys ahead of time, get a buddy and pass em back and forth as the quest updates. Well as of 03-29-05 anyways...

I got the quest, found my first butterfly but cannot figure out how to get the update. I can't inspect the butterfly and when I hail her, she doesn't say anything.

Roma, here is a line from the update notes concerning why you got a smaller bag:
Ellowys Laceleaf and Chel Morgan's quests now reward bags which are more in line with the challenge of the quest and to avoid impacting the crafted bag market. Bags that were previously awarded have not been reduced in size.

Buying the butterflies from brokers DOES work, at least at the moment (maybe it's a bug and they will fix it, maybe not, who knows?).
I`m currently working on that quest and had to get a striped blue butterfly first, then a striped violet butterfly and now I have to get a striped yellow butterfly. I bought the blue and the violet one at the broker and it worked.

As Zucia states, there is some variability in this quest.
For me;
Step 1 - Striped Violet Butterfly
Step 2 - Striped Violet Butterfly (because the stripes on the first butterfly were crooked)
Step 3 - Spotted Yellow Butterfly
For me;
Step 1 - Striped Violet Butterfly
Step 2 - Striped Violet Butterfly (because the stripes on the first butterfly were crooked)

The butterflies she requests are not random. She has you collect 3 butterflies, and after each one you must return to her to get the request for the next one. Oakmyst Forest seems to be the preferred search area, but you will have competition.

Finished this quest tonight. She first asks you to find her a striped blue or violet butterfly.Butterflies can be found in the outlying zones surrounding Qeynos. You must collect the items yourself, you cannot buy them from a broker. After you return she asks you to find a striped violet butterfly, so here i go trapsing back to oakmyst to find it for her. I return to her again and now she wants a spotted yellow butterfly. Finally find it and give it to her and your reward is a 12 slot small collectors pouch.
After finishing with the butterflies she will give you another quest called Desperately Seeking Moths. They can be found in the outlying zones surrounding Freeport. First she asks for a plain brown moth. Fairly simple other than the running back and forth from FP to TS. Next she wants either a striped brown or spotted brown (the quest varies per individual). While you were out gathering the moths she let the Spotted yellow butterfly get away and now you have to find that one for her again. The reward this time is an 18 slot medium collectors pouch.
She will then give you a third quest; Desperately Seeking Ants which doesnt seem so bad as at least you can stay in Thundering Steppes. First you must find a Plain red ant. Second is a Striped red ant, but when you give her this one she drops it and you have to find the striped red again. Final reward is a 20 slot large collectors pouch.
My advice: Save yourself the aggravation and just do the leaf quests for bags. Oh and a side note for SOE devs - Please make this NPC attackable, i really want to kill her.
