Although Khaine is a god in the pantheon shared by all Elves, he has been elevated above all others by the Dark Elves. To them he is the Lord of Murder, although to other Elves he is the God of War. His full name is Khaela Mensha Khaine, meaning the Bloody Handed Khaine.

Within the society of the Dark Elves, worship of Khaine is by far the dominant religion. The Khaine that is worshiped by the Dark Elves is described as a god of murder and is shown as a four armed, fanged, daemon-like giant surrounded by a sea of chittering scorpions. This suits the harsh nature of Dark Elves, who view any sign of weakness as a fatal flaw. The symbol of Khaine is a stylized scorpion and his colours are black and red, symbolizing night, death and blood.

The primary Temple of Khaine resides in the fortress city of Ghrond in Naggaroth. It is a seat of great power, as the worship of Khaine is officially the state religion. Morathi (the Queen Mother) and Crone Hellebron (the High Priestess of the temple) both claim supreme dominance of the temple. The Temple is served by acolytes known as Witch Elves, the so-called Brides of Khaine; female Dark Elves who devote themselves to a life of murder and bloodshed in the name of Khaine. Witch Elf oversee the rites of sacrifice which maintain a constant flow of fresh blood in the temple, and before battle they bathe in the Cauldron of Blood to receive the blessing of Khaine.

Within High Elf culture, Khaine is given an altogether different portrayal as the God of War. To those that never followed the dark path he is seen as an important god, a god which enhances the war-like side of their soul, but one which must be controlled. To the High Elves he is portrayed as a huge, angry elf warrior clad in bronze plate armour stained with blood. His long flowing jet-black hair is often caked with the blood of his foes. He is also seen as carrying two serrated blades that drip blood eternally. Open worship of Khaine is only performed at the start of a battle, at any other times it is forbidden; fearing that to worship such a god on a daily basis would turn Ulthuan into another Naggaroth.

The place that symbolizes the god of blood is, surprisingly, just north of Ulthuan on an island called the Blighted Isle where the great Altar of Khaine lies. Embedded in the black stone of the altar is the Sword of Khaine forged by Vaul at the beginning of the world. The Sword of Khaine is said to be a weapon that appears different to each person; to some it may appear as a sword, to others an axe or a spear. When Ulthuan was young the greatest warrior of elven-kind, Aenarion, the first Phoenix King, wielded the Sword of Khaine and defended the Elven Kingdom from certain defeat at the hands of Chaos. The island is remote and desolate place, and is rarely visited.

In The Old World there are a few secretive cults of assassins and murderers who worship Khaine in his guise as the Lord of Murder.

Although it is clear that Khaine is not the Chaos god Khorne going by another name, there exists a definite connection between the two gods, however tenuous it may be. By some accounts, Khaine was a lesser aspect of the Khorne now acting independently. In the Warhammer 40,000 version of this myth, Slaanesh attempted to dominate Khaine but Khorne intervened. He claimed, rightfully, that Khaine belonged to him. While the two gods clashed Khaine managed to escape.
