I only got the update after exiting and zoning in from the northmost sewer entrance.

While the key quest is soloable, the instance is heroic.

I've found the entrance and managed to enter the Onslaught, but after exiting because there were mobs in the way and trying to re-enter I can't find the Onslaught part again. Is it only a one-time entering zone or is it bugged?
If you read the comments here and the actual description above, you would have seen that it is a one-time thing, per key.
I was about to give up on this since it never would update no matter how many times I was in a group entering DFC.
The other comment here said they tried the left/NW grate and sure enough it gave me two options.

I got quest completed by entering trough one of moat crates. The One more to south.
Just click it and select enter Deathfist Citadel: Onslaught.
Dinged before zoning in.

We gained access to the sewers and got the update by swimming up to and standing near the front sewer entrance (near the main bridge entrance), however, upon entering and killing every MOB inside the sewers and the citadel, we received no evidence of completion nor any rewards...what next?

Fitz, your Pinecrusher reward was for the Operation Greenhood quest (also an excellent quest to check out), not the rusty key quest.

I Hailed Captain Vulis but nothing happend. You need to run to the Deathfist Citadel and jump in the moat. Swim around it and you will find one of the two sewers. One will get you the update to enter the sewers.

The Quest will update if you go to the Grate in the Moat and Click to Enter the Deathfist Citadel:Onslaught instance.

Captain Vulis is who you want to see he in a non agresso orc in the tents by the lumberjack area -350 -390 area. was camping another named when i saw that orc so i went to talk and bam he was the finish for this quest PURE luck

How do you get the update? I wandered around a bit in there but no update. Do you need to kill the lowbie version of the Emperor or something?

This is a prestige quest... the layout is Deathfist Cit but alot easier mobs... think lvl 37 was the highest i saw... the rope isn't clicky, so our group made our way up through the sewers... on the top of the palace is the only green mobs i saw... killed them and left, got 3 server first loots out of the deal but nothing impressive... woulda been fun if i was around lvl 35... one shot deal, quest completed... it is a good way to scout the general layout of DFC with some changes but gives ya a feel for where doors and such are...

This key will grant you access through the sewer grate below the castle. The clickable grate is accessed by jumping into the moat and swimming around to it.

This is a one shot key. If you are killed then you end up outside unable to reenter.

It's neither of those, I have the Key but it's not automatic entry to DFC (deathfist citadel) or a quest inside that I am aware of. We have cleared the whole of DFC and not got an update.

The key is used to gain access to the citadel sewers without having to do the access quest.

this quest updated after a trip to Citadel. It hasnt been completed but says its a key to enter citadel. May be the front door access key to citadel.

I found a rusted key in Zek, the Orcish Wastes that carries the symbol of the Deathfist. The salt crusted on the key leads me to believe that it will open a lock here in the Orcish Wastes near some body of water. I should start my search near the Deathfist Citadel for clues as to what this might unlock.
The key appears to fit a lock on a sewer grate leading into the orc stronghold.

This quest is initiated by examining "A Rusting Key". This item drops on monsters in Zek (Dust Adders, Orcs, A Kelp Horror, and Bracken Sprites confirmed).
This is the key to a special instanced area of the Deathfist Citadel entitled Deathfist Citadel: Onslaught. This is entered by jumping in the moat and swimming aroud the sewers until you get the update. You can then click on the grate to enter the instance.
The reward is the unique loot table of the zone.
