As of the TEARS OF VEESHAN patch on Tuesday, November 12, 2013, you no longer need 240 harvesting skill.

You must also have 240 mining in addition to the harvesting to do this quest. I just did it today. Buying the coal one by one at the Tradeskill vendor works just fine too.

In response to Jester and anyone else with a pure crafter, it is possible to do this quest at level 2 adv and level 50 tradeskill. Where to harvest is easy, Oakmyst if your on Qeynos side till you hit 20, then move to antonica around oracle tower till 90 (need to dodge some lizards and gnolls but gnolls are stationary pretty much and lizards are only around oracle tower so once you move more toward ardent needle they wont be an issue. For 90-140 head to TS and go to tower 4-5 area (only a little dodging required for lions). For 140-220 head to Zek around 3 toes lake (small area unless you also sneak around the orcs to harvest but its not too hard), or EL around druid ring or grainery areas (some wasps/fairys/bears to dodge but only a select few are aggro). For 220-240 head to RV and harvest around Fools Gold tavern all way down to river where the agro nymphs are. As you harvest rotate the camera to help in avoiding mobs sneaking up on you. Overall took me a few good hours to get to 240 but scored some rares on my alchemist alt and ended up level 8 (gained 6 levels just from exploration xp and the faction quest starter in FD) and got his bag/skill charm.

For those of us who have a crafter only, not adventuring...how exactly are we supposed to raise our harvesting skill to 240. I can go to 350, but where??? It's not like I can run out into an open zone to harvest and raise the skill and unless something changed, the starting zones have a hard cap on skill progression. Besides, who wants to sit in Sunken City, or Forest Ruins and riase a skill to 240?

You have to have a tradeskill level of 50. You have to have completed the "Improving Relations" quest giving by the Captain (I think it's Captain) on the dock. After you do those 2 things, have your harvesting skill to 240 and you should be good to go.

I bought the coal 10 at a time and it worked fine.

Ok, sorry i didnt add that into the quest ahead of time, but you need to have done the quests for Captain Ingrid - Improving Relations with the Locals, on the docks first, then the quest comes available to do from Sparks, and your Alchemy has to be a minimum of lvl 50 to get the quest

I've looked for the NPC at the location given and hes not there. I find him in town and all he asks is if I want to see one of his experiments, and my only reply is no, thanks. My skills are past 240 and I'm level 66, how do I get this quest?

This is a tradeskill quest only, meaning only Alchemist can get it. There is one of these for each of the tradeskill disciplines in Shin.
