I found that in killing the Gladehoofs in Lesser Faydark, I was able to complete this L&L quite quickly. I had to clear all centaurs out on both sides of the river 2x before it started raining quest parts and the spirit updated.
No faction hits on these mobs either and their level is 59. Their loc begins around 72, -23, 9. Happy hunting!

Supposedly you can get some of the items such as the mane and hoof from the Gladehoof Centaurs in Lesser Faydark (according to the descriptions on this site). However, I have not yet gotten any after quite a few kills. I think you're much better off going to TT and killing grey mobs as some of the pieces are quite expensive on the broker.
Being a 'good' Dirge, I didn't kill the TT centaurs in my 20s due to the negative faction. Who wants to run around TT with all the centaurs after your butt!?

I still love to do them... even on grey mobs. And I am very glad they gave finally some more meaning to the L&L quests... (as needed for the Masters Rage).

L&L's were fun when you did them just to get them. Now that they are required to get Smite it is rediculous. I have spent 5hours a day for the last 7 days and still no hoof or hand drop. My faction has drop to Dubious and that means alot of gnoll killing to get it back. Sony said they increased the loot drop for L&L's with the update but if they did then why are the items so rare in drops still. Sometimes I wonder if they are even worth the effort. This is just a game and it's suppose to be fun not hard work. Soloing for hours a day for nothing to show but slow XP is not fun.

Frankly, I think these L&L quests are intended to give additional reward when doing other quests within the zone. I have received my L&L quest rewards without even focusing on the quest. I just make sure to pick up the book for the quest the first time I enter that zone and then it takes care of itself as I complete other quests for the zone.

From my experience, the three autoupdate pieces are listed in a three-tier system, with the first being a "common" drop, the second being an "uncommon" drop, and the third being a "rare" drop. If you get one drop on the scale, you automatically get all drops in the lower tiers. Therefore, it is possible to get one, two, or three in one kill. I know this sounds silly, but after doing almost all of the Lore and Legend quests pre-KoS in rapid succession, it was just something that I noticed. I never got the spirit without also getting the heart and brain, for example, but I could get just the heart, or the brain and heart without the spirit in one drop.

Finished this quest tonight (er, this morning) in Antonica.
Killed approx 150 centaurs total. Toward the end I had five ears, three eyes, one hoof, no mane, and no hand (that's not counting those I examined for the quest, natch).
I did not have one auto update. I wound up getting all three from one centaur.
Same thing happened to me tonight on the ghost L&L.
I understand that the auto updates are supposed to be random, but after two similar situations, one has to wonder if all three are awarded simultaneously after a certain number of kills. I dunno. I've completed other L&L in previous weeks and they didn't act like this.
If I can stay awake long enough to finish golem L&L, I'll post results.

It says the book is a 'timed spawn'. Does anyone know how long it takes to spawn? I have come through many times and the bed has never been highlightable to me. I don't have the quest nor have I completed it. Maybe I'm bugged or just unlucky.

Be prepared for your faction to drop DRAMATICALLY on this one...I'm still killing gnolls just to try and recover.

Allaedila....yes you can. Eventualy got around to finishing this when I was in late 40's. They all dropped np.

Is it possible to get the automatic updates (spirit etc) when all centaurs are grey? Has anyone finished this quest when they were in their 40s or 50s?

Well it took me about an hour to get this quest. I kept my journal targeted to the quest as well as hunt between Towers 3 and 4. The type of Centari (wrong spelling) that completed the quest for me was an Archer and she had a black mask on if that means anything. She was near the group of trees by Tower 3. She gave me the brains, heart, spirit, and one more thing all at once! For what it's worth hope this helps.

My wife did L&L quests together. We play in the same room. We always get all the automatic updates at the same time. On the same mob kill. Which means it has nothing to do with clicking on the quest in your journal, or any other such superstition.
Obviously, the update is assigned to the mob when it spawns, like loot, on the server at Sony. You just have to be lucky enough to get it. It took us about 500 kills to get the last Siren update. Frustrating, yes. Random, yes. Bugged, no.

I have found that when I cant find a particular pice of thses creatures, and usually the spirit, that it requires killing a type of that creature I havn't killed yet, kill hundreds of orcs for example(warriors and rune casters mostly, but not till I moved and kill 2 orcs of a different flavor did I get it.

Finished the quest after killing about 150-200 Cents. A good place to kill groups of them is just West of Tower 3 in a little pit.

I received the Spirit, Heart and Brain off Captain Duranas (Named Centaur) and his two counterparts. 1 fight, 3 updates.

I've killed many, many centaurs at this point -- the last update for spirit is yet to be realized. I'm way past the point of XP for these mobs if I hunt on my own, and I'm about ready to quit this stupid quest in favor of doing something more valuable.

Quest seems to work fine. Just doesnt update every time you kill. Other than that it just takes awful long till you find a piece you need

Bugged? Probably. The entire line of L&L seems to suffer from wanting to maintain priority in your quest hotbar.
I have found that I will NOT receive any quest update if that specific quest is not targetted in my journal.
Why do I think this? Well, for one, when I change quests from an L&L to another quest and attempt to do the L&L I do NOT receive the "Your quest journal has been updated" message. This message should always appear whether you found something or not. If I select the quest I want, I get the message.
This is just how it appears to me. So if you're not getting the automatic updates you need (spirit etc) try to make sure you have the quest targetted in your journal first. Just a helpful tip.

Finally got the autoupdate bits. I must have killed 500 centaurs. Still don't have the hoof or ear. These darn L&L quests should be heritage. the reward really blows for quests that take this long to complete.

OK, I have been killing centaurs for over 2 weeks now and still cannot get either heart, brain or spirit to update. I even deleted quest and started over, still zip. Have filed a couple of CS tickets and gotten no response. WTH is with this quest?

Lore and Legend quests are started by examining a special book or examining the first body part you find for that race. Either way, you will not get auto updates until you have the quest. The book for this Lore and Legend quest is "A History of the Centaur". This book can be found on a bed in the Village of Thundermist at 595,-2,-145 .
The quest requires you to kill Centaurs for the auto-updates and body parts (which must be examined). Body parts are also tradeable, so check the broker!

When you have found and/or examined the last part the quest will auto-complete and you will receive:
- A History of the Centaur - A book you can place in your home.
- Trophy: Obrel's Gambit - A trophy to hang on the wall of your house
- Your Master Strike, Smite or Rage skill will now affect Centaurs.
The reward for this quest is a furniture version of the book and a trophy which can be placed inside of your house.
