The starting ship for Federation is the Light Cruiser and the starting ship for the Empire is the B'rel Bird-of-Prey.

Your career and skills place no limitation on which craft you can use. Each time you gain a rank you will get a free ship that you pick. After you get the free one you can buy the other ships from that tier with energy credits. You will be able to customize and rename your ships one time for free.
