Project Morpheus Coming to the PS4 in 2016
SCE revealed a new prototype during GDC this week.
VR is kicking up a lot of chatter at this year's Game Developers Conference (GDC). SCE has joined in the action by revealing their latest prototype for Project Morpheus, as well as announcing that the VR headset is slated to launch in the first half of 2016.
The latest prototype offers a number of improvements:
- OLED display: Previously a 5" LCD, now it is a 5.7" 1920xRGBx1080 OLED. This new screen expands the field of view and enables low persistence, removing motion blur.
- 120hz refresh rate: Doubling the previous refresh rate has allowed games to now be rendered at 120FPS
- Super low latency: Latency has been reduced to less than 18ms, half of the original prototype
- More accurate tracking: Three LEDs have been added to the headset to make positional tracking more precise. This brings the total to nine LEDs, better supporting 360 degree tracking.
- User-friendly design: The headband is easier to manage, with a single band and quick release. The headband supports the weight of the unit on the top of your head, so pressure is off of your face. Overall, the headset has been adjusted to be lighter.
More details about Project Morpheus will be released during E3 this summer.
