I guess it's like Steam, where all the affiliated games under this new ownership will be played by launching from one common on-line portal. I'm not sure I see great advantages for the players here altho maybe technically it will make the games play smoother.
I vaguely remember when WoW went to Steam back when I used to play Wow. The problem was I had taken a long break in the interim and the switch to Steam happened while I was gone. It was actually very discouraging to try to return and find that my old shortcuts and links didn't work and I had to download and install Steam to access my old account. With so many old-time EQ players seemingly returning these days I wonder if this change could be discouraging. Old-time gamers coming back for nostalgic reasons may not be all that comfortable with having to download and install a game portal just to visit their old stomping grounds.

Very strange, I've recently checked out WoW after a 12 year absence and did not have to download Steam. I simply installed WoW from Blizzard's site, signed in and all my chars were present and accounted for exactly (well, not exactly as their levels were all squished) as I had left them.
That is interesting. I guess 12 years is a long time and they apparently have changed the technical approach to playing WoW. I'm playing too much EQ these days to even consider checking out my old WoW characters but good luck to you and I wish you Happy Wowing!

WoW has never been on steam. EQ was on steam for a few expansions, but even then it never required you to use steam
