Hartok explained to me that he believes a bear is out to seek revenge on him for hunting in this area. He seems rather shaken up about the whole situation. He informed me that he would be willing to reward me well for my efforts. Hartok last saw this bear while he was in the Shattered Vale, accessed through a pass within the mountain range to the southwest. If I am able to locate a Giantslayer messenger along the way, I may be able to discover how to get inside the druid vale.
I have slain the Windstalker grizzly.
I have spoken to Hartok.I have slain the beast that has been stalking Hartok. Now that the beast is gone, it appears that Hartok is back to his old ways.
Stage 1

Nice to see this quest is working as of today. I was reading the previous comment and wondered if I could finish it as I was finishing the invasion part too.
The grizzly walked into the camp soon after the last druid ring mob died.
It also gave me achievement exp.
The reward is far from being worth the effort though. Level 10 boots that you have to kill 3 level 20^ then a level 17^??!!...not to mention having to work fast enough to kill mid teens giantslayer melee mobs that respawn in the zone.

I just sat for a bit over 2 hours in the zone going through the petition process on this. After two GMs suggested the exact same thing (to be sure the one is cleared of all mobs & the ring event is properly completed which it was, and it was) I got a reply from Senior GM Kimbial, 28 Jan 07 @ 3:28PM that the bear spawn is broken and the Development team is aware of it. So I guess just sit on the quest until fixed.

I think this zone went through some changes. When you examine a Giantslayer messenger's body, you get the quest Invasion of the Vale, in addition to the quest you receive from Hartok, Attack of the Killer Bear. Entering the Invasion of the Vale instance of The Shattered Vale, you'll see wandering Giantslayers and what looks like a druids' ring surrounded by Black Magi. To complete the Invasion of the Vale quest, you need to kill the outer ring of Black Magi. Once they are all dead, the inner ring of Black Magi become aggro and attackable. Killing all of them starts the Portal mobs to appear one at a time. Now originally, I think you only got 1 to spawn in the instance, at a time, meaning you had to exit the instance and hope one of the other 2 appeared when you were able to zone in again. I did this quest this morning and once I killed the 1st, the 2nd appeared. Killed him, then the 3rd appeared. Killed him and got quest complete, 17sp and exp. Attack of the Killer Bear quest is still going, however, and normally after killing the Portal mobs, the Windstalker Grizzly starts to walk his way down until you can attack him. Well, this morning I killed everything in the zone and kept killing but he wasn't coming. I bugged it and zoned out. I did this quest about 5 months ago with a paladin and had no problems getting the bear to pop. I guess a patch must have messed it up.

Started the Quest at Lvl 25 Warlock. I was killed after first round. By the time I came back to Quest I just turn Lvl 28. Everything was grey except the Giant which was green. I killed everything twice, some maybe 3 times. Waited 20 mins after last kill but Bear would not spawn. I did notice 4 Gnolls on cliff in back that I could not get to. Any thoughts?

You must step inside the swirling purple cloud to loot the chest. I got the chest by stepping into the cloud, and changing my point of view to first person. Looted chest like normal.

I've tried the same with the chest that would't open, and i found that you just have to wait app. 5 min.. I've got a "Abomination's Cloth Shawl" and "Advanced Jeweler Volume 20" from it...

As a 22 Brg I did this quest with no trouble. Killed the Abomination, which was a big vegetable not a Minotaur, and the bear easily. However, after killing the Abomination a chest appeared amidst the swirling, purple dust that could not be targeted or opened. I tried every possible means of opening to no avail. So, other than the quest reward from Hartok, I got nought but exp. Pffffffttt!

When I did the quest, you had to kill all the Black Magi Initiates outside the circle before you were allowed to kill the Black Magi Elders inside the circle. If an Initiate was alive, the Elders were listed as, "Not an enemy" and you couldn't attack them.
Agree with Koloff, the quest reward is crummy, given the number of Initiates, Elders, Portal Abomination, Bear, wandering guards and dogs you have to kill.
But the quest generates a lot of XP and is a good leveling quest.

The portal abomination has owned me since the combat revamp. Is anyone else having problems or is it my poor playing skill? :)

The Bear spawned way up on the zone wall. Took me a while to see it and was afraid I had a bug where it wasn't going to spawn. But it did within 5 minutes. High up on the zone wall, untargetable. It circled and came down a spiral ramp in the zone wall and became targetable.
The levels listed by SkiSwope all Jive though I had a L20 man-eating-plant as my portal abomination. The giantslayers are L17 - L19 some with a dog or two. All solo mobs and the abomination and bear did not seem any harder than a usual mob of their level. They weren't extra-tough named mobs.
Reward was from hartok was some bear hide boots. Pretty crummy considering they max out at skill 75 (L15) and you killed L17-20 mobs for them. Chest drops inside were of similar quality. Not total junk but grey drops off blue and green mobs.

The quest name is actually "Attack of the Killer Bear" - singular, not plural.
It's important to note that you do NOT need to kill all the mobs in the Vale zone. You just need to kill:

Wierd... I got a big minotaur called Portal Abhorrent when I killed all the ratongas. Also, I got 1 silver and some copper for completing it... no gloves.

To do this you'll need access to Vale of Shattering threw the new quest from giantslayer messengers on the ground near StormHold. After getting the letter off the corpse you can then go to a new instance up a path in the mountains blocked by boulders which should be close to where the corpse was found. Inside the instance youll need to kill the mages outside the stone circle and then kill the inner circle ones. A summon then spawns out of the mess of smoke at this point the bear,Windstalker Grizzly, should appear near path leading out.

First, it's attack of the killer bear, not bees.
Secondly, you find this bear in the new Vale of the Shattering instance. Three steps to spawning him:
1. Kill everything in the vale to make the casters targetable.
2. Kill the casters which causes a minotaur to spawn.
3. Kill the minotaur and the bear will spawn.

This is actually called Attack of the Killer Bears . . . it requires you to have access to the new instance in the Shattered Vale, called Invasion of the Vale. Go in this instance, kill all the Ratonga spellcasters around the druid ring, which will then open up the ratonga spellcasters inside the ring to be attacked - kill them, and a big goofy Minotaur spawns - kill him, and you will notice a giant Winstalker Bear walking around nearby - kill him, and return for your reward.

This should be attack of the killer bears and is given after you complete 2 other quests for Hartok.
The bear spawns in the Shattered Vale, one of the instanced zones, not sure which. The bear spawns after you kill all of the ratonga's and the mob that appears in the portal.
The final mob is lvl 20 and the others range from 16-19. I got a pair of LA gloves as reward.

I believe the name of the bear is "A Windstalker bear", its like an 18-20 mob, and the one my group killed happened to spawn in the invasion of the vale instance AFTER we had killed all the casters and the boss mob. The quest reward was kind of lame, only 1SP and change and not much of an XP bump.

You must log in or create an account to post messages.Hartok Woolyman at Windstalker Village ( -1816, -37, -531 ) gives this quest after you complete the quest, Door to Door Delivery. A bear has been stalking him and he asks you to kill it.
The bear is in a special instanced version of the Shattered Vale called Invasion of the Vale.
To enter the instance you must kill the wolves feeding on a dead Giantslayer messenger outside the vale. Then inspect the corpse to receive a letter. Examine the letter to get the access quest, The Invasion of the Vale, which will allow you to zone inside.
You must slay all of the monsters in the zone, which initiates a ring event. Keep killing until a Windstalker Grizzly spawns. Then slay him and return to Hartok Woolyman.
