Azshara : New and Goblin Improved!

A recent interview with Blizzard designers about changes to Azshara in the upcoming Cataclysm.

Recently Blizzard gave us more information on changes in the upcoming Cataclysm expansion; Game designers Craig Amai and Dave Kosak give us some inside views on the overall design and  revamping  of Azshara.

It's great to see that no zone is safe. In other interviews we saw that quests and pieces of a zone change, a typhoon or vortex here, new quests sprinkled about, or new story lines.  But here, we see Blizzard isn't afraid to completely wipe the zone and start fresh. They've choosen to keep a few things familiar so it still feels like the old zone, using the same color palette and a few choice landmarks. The familiarity is comforting amidst the massive amount of new content.

Changing the zone's level is a huge difference, both for the zone, and the continent. It gives us, the players,  many more options with our leveling experience. Azshara is now 10-20, and being connected to Orgrimmar, competes with Northern Barrens. After Cataclysm launches, everyone that creates a new character, young or veteran players players alike, will have many more choices to make their play experience much more enjoyable. This was fantastic for leveling in Northrend and I'm  realy happy they carried it over.

The inclusion of instanced parts of the zone, where we get to feel that each one of us makes a difference. The fact that a goal can be visibly and permanently achieved through our trials and tribulations in questing is very exciting. I foresee many new players, and  80s, coming here to check out the new quests, story line, and the freshly reimagined zone.

Also stop in and drop by our forums, to discuss, or read about, any of the great upcoming changes in the World of Warcraft, or see if any of our great posters, that are in the Beta, could shed a few more snippets of info on the zone.

lets hand more stuff over to the horde

i think what bothers me more about this is that its one more zone thats either A) stomped on by the horde, or B) just handed over to the horde. its making me wonder what reason do i really have to even want to play alliance, other then i don't feel like some murderous savage when doing so. so far, the only thing alliance seems to be getting other then Gilneas is southern barrens. whoopydoo. another thing : its like the devs are sticking a shiv into the nightelve's kidneys and twisting it all over, with how much their getting kicked in the balls. ashenvale? burning. azhara? lets give it to the goblins. how about feralis? i bet the tauren get a free ride there too.
Changes needed

I always thought this was one of the best looking and most interesting zones but it always had kinda an incomplete feel. There was nothing to bring players there apart from the occasional quest. No real quest hub to speak of and a couple of the existing quests were always bugged. I remember one quest on the cliffs to the south that never worked properly.
It would be nice to see such a neglected zone become such a significant zone.
can't wait to see this zone

I always thought it was the most interesting zone in the old world visually. I loved the elevation changes in this zone, the mountains, the cliffs going down to the beach/sea. Very cool stuff. Ruins out in the water. There are some interesting quests out here too. Even though it involves a lot of running back and forth, I do sometimes like to do these quests. The zone just has a way cool feel to it.

Getting around this zone could be a problem, however. Roads are scarce, and if you fall off a cliff, you got a long run/swim to find a way up. Mobs and elite giants are everywhere (not a problem in the revamped zone I'm sure).

"Hydraxian Warlords"

"Overall, players will find that very little remains of the Azshara of old. The Hydraxian Warlords have departed."

I like that Blizzard doesn't even remember the old lore while they go through and take it all apart. It's the Hydraxian Waterlords. Way to be pro and use a common player misreading of a name in your official releases.
good

I always hated this zone in old world. I think I did a handful of quests with my first toon in here for the lvl 50 rogue quest and that was it.
