Battle.net Merger to Become Mandatory on Nov. 11

MMO-Champion reported it over the weekend, and now it's official: all current World of Warcraft players will be required to merge their World of Warcraft accounts with a Battle.net account on Nov. 11 in order to log in to the game. This is becoming mandatory because the new Battle.net will ultimately let players "participate in cross-realm chat in World of Warcraft, create real-life friends lists, communicate across different games, and a whole lot more."

Players who merge their accounts, as well as those who already completed the process, will receive a new penguin in-game pet. Bornakk says you can "check for him in your in-game mailbox later this week." To merge your account, all you need to do is visit the Battle.net Web site. You can also check out the FAQ here. Bornakk's full post can be found after the jump.

How do you feel about the mandatory mergers? Personally, I found it to be a quick and painless process. What about you? There's already a discussion going on in our forums, so feel free to add to the thread.

A few months ago, we unveiled the Battle.net account, our new way for players to log in to World of Warcraft and future Blizzard games, sign up for upcoming beta tests, shop the online Blizzard Store, and more with just one username and password. This was just the first step in the rollout of the brand-new Battle.net; in the future, players will be able to use Battle.net to participate in cross-realm chat in World of Warcraft, create real-life friends lists, communicate across different games, and a whole lot more.

In preparation for the launch of these new features, on November 11, 2009, all current World of Warcraft players will be required to merge their World of Warcraft accounts with a Battle.net account in order to log in to the game. As our way to say “thanks” for taking a moment to go through the process, existing World of Warcraft accounts that upgrade to Battle.net (including those that have already switched over) will receive a brand-new penguin in-game pet -- check for him in your in-game mailbox later this week. Starting on November 11, all World of Warcraft players will need to log in to the game using a Battle.net username and password, and anyone who wishes to create a new World of Warcraft account will need to start with a Battle.net account.

Creating a Battle.net account is simple and free. To merge your existing account with a Battle.net account, visit http://us.battle.net . For more info, check out the Battle.net site or read the FAQ: http://us.battle.net/faq/index.html

If I am not interested in any of these "Gracious Gifts from on high" why do I have to create an account for them?

I am NOT interested in letting Blizzard use my email for anything but billing. A use for which they could NOT share information about me.

Stop blowing smoke up my *** Blizzard and come clean on EXACTLY why a battle.net account is NECESSARY if I am not interested in ANY of the "Gifts" you have to offer.

If you intend to sell my information then give me money, not some @#%^ing e-peen penguin!

I did it a couple of months ago - but only since I needed to so I could get the mountain dew battle bot. :)
Painless process really and logging on now is no different. Email address is longer to enter than username but since the game saves that I only have to enter my password anyway.
As expected, pain in the . . .

A verification e-mail has been sent to your e-mail address. Simply click the link in this e-mail to verify your e-mail address and return to Battle.net, which will resume the World of Warcraft account merge process.

You must verify your e-mail address to continue.

An hour after signing up, still no e-mail. This is not a problem on my end. The information is correctly entered, and my e-mail is "working as intended." I've gone through similar processes signing up for different websites (including this one) a hundred times or more, and not once has the verification e-mail not arrived immediately.

I can already foresee the next step. A day or more will pass, and I will again attempt to create an account, only to get a message along the lines of "An account with this name already exists."

<sigh>

Edit: E-mail finally arrived about an hour and a half after registering. The rest of the process went without problems.

I already merged my two WOW accounts and the CD codes for other Blizzard games into a Battle.net account. It went painless. Its easier, now I just have to type one account name and password and select the Wow account I wanna play with.
but I HIGHLY recommend getting the Battle.net Authenticator as well. Either for a cellphone, iPod Touch, or the keychain.

contact Blizzard, there is a 1-800 number.
They can merge the two accounts into one.
I just did it last week, and this was months after originally creating separate Battlenet accounts for my two World of Warcraft accounts.
Not working

I have tried to do the merger several times today and the website won't go past the EULA page. It is not my computer or my internet as everything else works just fine. You would think that if they were going to put this up they would be ready for it.

Ha. To me, it's a nuisance, considering I have just the noe account; but what are you going to do, right?
