There's been a massive casting call for X-Men: Dark Phoenix. As with all casting calls, names are just labels that aren't totally indicative of who the characters will actually be. The Hashtag Show with some speculation on the topic. They're speculating that Sunfire, Dazzler, Mimic, Karl Lykos/Sauron and Mastermind may be introduced. As well as the Shi'ar and the Hellfire Club. Dunno about specific characters, but the groups are possible since they're pretty heavily used during the entirety of the Phoenix Saga. I know I'd be giddy if they brought back Kevin Bacon, even if his Shaw was one of the most butchered characters of the movies. Only Darwin was worse, really.
Speculation that Whedon's reshoots for Justice League will involve the Hall of Justice. No word if the announcer from the old cartoon will be involved yet or the Darth Vader head Legion of Doom's swamp hideout showing up.

American Gods: Not really much of a reveal with Wednesday. I mean, it was pretty obvious day one. I did like all the faceless dancers with World, Tech, and Media. Real suave. Nice place to put a cliffhanger. There were so many Jesuses that I half expected a pick up truck to drive by and haul a few of them away. Dead Wife vs Wednesday should be fun. Hoping Anansi shows up more often next season.
Good timing, as American Gods goes down Preacher comes back on Sunday. Also Monday, because why not.

The Han Solo solo project has hit a bit of a snag as it's directors have been let go over creative differences. Word on the tubes is that there is already some talk over Phil Lord and Chris Miller's replacement(s), with Lawrence Kasdan, Joe Johnston, and Ron Howard at the top of the short list according to Twitter. Phil and Chris wrote a treatment for The Flash several years ago, and instead of directing they jumped at the chance to direct Han Solo. So now there's a rumbling that maybe they're crawling back to the directorless Scarlet Speedster movie.
From the realm of nightmares comes a rumor that Fox is at it again with yet another Fantastic Four movie, this time a "family friendly" take that is rumored to keep Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm but exile Reed and Sue in favor of their kids Franklin and Valeria, which is obviously lacking an infinite number of books worth of backstory but hey, let's be real here for a second. Could it really be worse than the last F4ntastic movie? More rumortastic is that Seth Grahame-Smith is behind the script for this alleged rerereboot, who you might remember as the guy that was previously attached as the writer/director of The Flash.
While Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal contradict each other on exactly where the Lethal Protector exists, there's a new rumor that Sony is going ahead and also introducing Cletus "Carnage" Cassidy into upcoming Venom movie. That's not so much a pacing issue than a whiplash lawsuit in the making. Barely introduced a new Spider-Man and already jumping into Venom and then adding Carnage on top? My neck hurts just thinking about it.

Brian Tyree Henry and Mahershala Ali will be providing voices for Jefferson and Aaron Davis for the upcoming animated Spider-Man movie, Miles' father and uncle respectively. Brian was/is okay on Atlanta, but Mahershala definitely killed in Luke Cage. Both solid additions to what is, sadly, a movie about the least entertaining Spider.
What passed under most radars, mine included, is that during the Black Panther trailer that is actress Nabiyah Be standing next to Michael B Jordon's Killmonger, and she's portraying Tilda Johnson / Nightshade. It was confirmed yesterday on Twitter by the actress' sister. Would have been a nice Easter Egg to have noticed in the movie instead of Twitter, but genies and bottles and whatnot. No word if she's survived Marvel's NDA Sniper Team.
Ron Howard officially directing the Han Solo spinoff. Now if some other movies could find directors (at all) as quickly as this project did we'd have no reason to be concerned for them. Talking to you, DCEU.

The Mist tv series starts up tonight on Spike TV. 10PM EST.
Based on the Stephen King story. Like the Movie, but probably better (could it be worse? Maybe. But it'd have to try hard).
I am slowly trying to catch up on 40 days of DVR backlog, but video games cut into that time. Got Flash and Supergirl done. about 4 or 5 episodes each. So lots of stuff, but overall they were good enough to keep me interested.
My DVR is still half full...
Edit: Not a bad start for The Mist. Other than being full of cliche characters. Gay Emo friend of the HIgh School Girl. Jock with a sheriff father who rapes the girl. Drug dealer with a hidden cache of money. Overprotective parents that can't agree on how to raise their kid.
At least the first bitchy woman gets killed off quickly.
Preacher: First, why isn't the Hardwick aftershow called "Speacher"? Seems like a completely lost opportunity. Anyway, everything was pretty much over the top as expected, though if I had anything to really complain about it was that yet another dog was killed. As much as I liked the Saint of Killers, what I'm really waiting for is The Grail to appear, and especially Herr Starr. Mostly to see just how much of what happens to him in the comics finds it's way on screen because, simply, I doubt a lot of it can possibly show up even if were HBO, much less AMC.

Julian Dennison cast in Deadpool 2. He was great in Taika Waititi's comedy The Hunt for the Wilderpeople so as far as I'm concerned he's a welcome addition.
Wolverine in The Greatest Showman trailer. Not exactly what I was expecting, but at the same time even I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting. Looks like something I'd see.

Trailer for Jumanji 2. Looks more interesting than I initially thought it would be. Enough to watch on basic cable, I guess. I like how the "ancient technology" of board games has been less anciented into what looks like an Atari with graphics that are three or four generations advanced for it. I'm sure the geeks won't find exception to that.
Trailer for The Inhumans. Lockjaw doing his doggy teleportation thing is neat, but that was about it. Hopefully they show the first Imax movie as episodes on ABC. Don't feel like I'd see this in the theaters either.
Michael Mando instagrammed a picture confirming that he'll be playing Mac Gargan, the Scorpion in Spider-Man: Homecoming. While the Lego is in costume, no real confirmation whether he will suit up or not, or if he'll be anything more than a transitional Easter Egg, since there are rumors he'll also show up in the Black & Silver spinoff.

Rosario Dawson, pretty much only known as Claire Temple in the Marvel Netflixverse, has departed from the New Mutants movie where she was going to play Dr Cecilia Reyes, but apparently has already been replaced by Alice Braga. Also in the X-Verse, Evan Peters will return as Quicksilver for X-Men: Dark Phoenix, so expect a third musical montage. Also Lamar Johnson has joined the project, but no word on who he will portray.
To noone's surprise Patty Jenkins will return for Wonder Woman 2.
Rick & Morty returns July 30th, and has a new trailer. Some new clips with several clips from that horrible horrible April 1st stunt.

Preacher: Eugene broke Hell. So turns out he didn't kill a girl who rejected him. The girl was an emo bitch who friend zoned him and in death by suicide, ruined his life. I'm curious if his situation actually broke the Hell Projector. Or if it's just a coincidence. The guard didn't seem all that surprised that it stopped working. So I guess it happens often.
Also, was Tulip's mob boss guy Bruce Willis? I couldn't make him out in the next episode preview.
Fear the Walking Dead was better this season so far. Mid Season finale next week.
Saw Despicable Me 3 over the Holiday. Liked it more than 2. Though 1 was better I think.
Preacher: The guard didn't seem all that surprised that it stopped working.
It wouldn't be hell if all the equipment worked. Probably a crew of Tech Demons cursing their existence having to constantly repair things. I'm mildly curious what Hitler's hell is like. I want to look it up, but either way whoever they got to play Herr Starr is a dead ringer for the guy. Makes me feel a little bad for the torture the guy is about to go through for who knows how many seasons.
Some casting news for Luke Cage 2. Joining Luke, Misty, and no doubt Claire because she's the Stan Lee of the Netflix shows will be Mustafa Shakir as John McIver "Bushmaster," and Gabrielle Dennis as Tilda Johnson the "Deadly Nightshade." Bushmaster is being described as a "natural leader, brimming with charisma, whose mission is focused on Harlem and vengeance." Tilda is "a brilliant, holistic doctor with a complicated history in Harlem where, as much as she tries to stay far from trouble, it seems to always find her." Though there's some speculation rumor talk about how Gabrielle is going to be the current current incarnation of the character, who last week dressed up as an alternate reality Nighthawk (who himself was so much a Batman proxy that even his costume could confuse you at first glance.) who apparently died off camera panel. Me, I doubt that.
Spider-Man: Homecoming tonight. People are saying some good things about it, but people are on average stupid so we'll see. Again, I'm bias so crank whatever I write back about a peg or two to get an accurate interpretation. Just off the trailers and promotional materials and toys I'm already digging the Ben Reilly "Scarlet Spider" inspired costume.

Stan Lee's wife died yesterday at the age of a billion. Pretty sure Stan Lee's immortality had something to do with it. Also in the movie news, apparently Jeremy Reinner broke both his arms on the set of Avengers: Infinity War. Which seems like quite the injury for an archer.
Spider-Man: Homecoming Reaction: More thorough to follow tomorrow. Better than both Amazing Garfield-Man and at least two of the Tobey-Man movies. Pretty much exactly as one would expect a high school age Peter to be. The inexperience and awkwardness really add a nice depth to the movie. Lots of little Easter Eggs. Lots. Obviously stick to the end, totally worth it.
---
First, let me air my grievances. Top of the list is that Aunt May has no excuse being as hot as she is. I'm so accustomed to the little old biddy that has a heart attack when someone so much as sneezes that it's kind of unnerving to see Melissa Tomei in the role. Like incest hot. That's just not fair. And the movie makes it a point to remind you of it. I also don't care what anyone says, including the script, but that was not Ned Leeds. That was Ganke Lee, Miles Morales' best friend from the Ultimate universe. There's no real reason why they couldn't just call him Ganke and be done with it.
Next, no Uncle Ben. Lots of fighting over Peter's need for a real life and the responsibility thrust upon him by the spider bite, but thankfully this was not an origin movie. They mention the spider in passing, but beyond that it's just two months after Captain America: Civil War. Not even a flashback ... unless you count some of the PSAs, which in themselves were absolutely hilarious. Well, that's not quite true, the movie starts basically after Tony recruits Peter for the fight in Civil War up to a bit of the fight itself, but no more flashing back.
Keaton's Vulture was extremely complex, but well written and believable enough in his motives to be thoroughly enjoyable. Probably the next best thing to Loki at this point. Marvel tends to have issues with their villains, and for once this one wasn't just a place holder for plot advancement. Likewise, Holland's Spider-Man was exactly what you'd expect of a 15 year old with super. Highly inexperienced and bullheaded, making one bad decision after another.
I was kind of curious who they were going to throw into the love interest role, because you really can't do a high school movie (much less a Spider-Man) without some kind of unrequited love interest. Thankfully it was neither Mary Jane or Gwen Stacy, but definitely a name that has popped up numerous times in the books. "Michelle" was amusing, but pretty transparent that she was pretty much Mary Jane. MJ was aloof to deal with her family issues which pretty much translated to "party girl" back in the 70s, and Michelle is pretty much the current equivalent, so I wouldn't be surprised in the least if future installments of this series doesn't address that.
I get what they wanted to do with Eugene "Flash" Thompson, but it just didn't do anything for me. The new bullying thing is cerebral and less physical so they wanted a jerkass Flash, which he certainly was. Just not my cup of tea.
The jokes were well spaced, unlike Guardians of the Galaxy 2 where if you weren't expecting it it would feel overwhelming, and the story was paced well enough that the story never felt like it was either dragging or racing to plot points.
I'm still debating whether I liked it more than Spider-Man 2, but there's very little denying (for me. Remember: bias) this reboot is better than at least four of the last movies.

Actually, Renner fractured his right elbow and his left wrist while filming “Tag.†Some movie I've never heard of and probably won't watch.
As to Spiderman, I'd give it a solid 7.5/10. It was funny, Holland was good, fat friend Ned was good, love interest Liz was sort of there, Flash was terrible. The action scenes got the job done, but were nothing to write home about. The Vulture was a pretty boring villain. He had a half decent justification for his criminal behavior, but the big shocking twist that he was Liz's father was needless, not to mention, not terrible shocking. Speaking of shocking, Shocker didn't last long. At least his jacket looked the part.
It was a fun fairly light hearted movie that set up Holland as a different but very likable Spiderman, but we already knew that from Civil War. I would have liked to see a little more, but what was there was worth watching. The second end credits scene is a sort of funny, but if you have to hit the bathroom, you won't miss any important story line tidbits.
I did see Spiderman over the weekend. And enjoyed it. I didn't think they overplayed the "Hot Aunt May" thing much. A few jokes in the beginning, then they moved on. So is Peter going to move on to the one loner chick as his love interest next?
I think my next movies will probably be Planet of the Apes, Valerian, and Dark Tower.
Not sure if I'll see Atomic Blonde when it comes out or not. I usually watch those types of movies when they come out on the movie channels or air on FX.
I did see a trailer for Daddy's Home 2. I did not think that movie would have done well enough to make another. I watched it on TV on day a while back, while funny, not something I'd visit the theater to see. Jumanji 2 looked a little disappointing. Guess I was thinking they'd just rehash the storyline with a trapped person like they did in Space Jumanji a while back. I thought I read somewhere that Karen Gillan's character was supposed to be someone trapped in there from a young age, but this trailer had her (and the others) just being video game avatars for the players of this "VR Jumanji" game.
If I were to check out another movie that doesn't involve colorful tights and nonsensical storylines I'd probably pick Dark Tower.
Kevin Biegel officially announced that Milana Vayntrub will be Squirrel Girl and Derek Theler will be Mister Immortal in Freeform's New Warriors. Which is weird because they're both Great Lakes AvengersX-Men Avengers, but whatever. They'll be joining Jeremy Tardy (Night Thrasher) Calum Worthy (Speedball) Matthew Moy (Microbe and Kate Comer (Debrii).

So here's James Franco as Tommy Wiseau in a movie about the making of The Room called The Disaster Artist. People keep calling The Room as the worst movie ever, but at the very least Birdemic and Troll II were far worse. Though that doesn't really lessen just how bad The Room was. Oh hi Mark.

Walton Goggins signed his name on the dotted line for a key role in Ant-Man and the Wasp. I'd speculate either Crossfire or Eric O'Grady. Both are the types of characters Goggins tends to be cast for.
AMC to continue their tradition, as The Walking Dead will be returning October 8th with their 100th episode. Considering that particular milestone, Glenn died in issue 100 so will someone die in episode 100?

According to Noah Hawley, the guy in charge of FX's Legion, he's working with Fox on a film involving Doctor Doom. Even considering Fox's track record I'm still intrigued with the idea. No word if it's a Fantastic Four movie or a straight Doctor Doom flick.
DC's Shazam finally has a director in David F. Sandberg. He's worked on Lights Out and the upcoming Annabelle: Creation.

The CW shows leading to a Black Lightning trailer. [youtube==niE1wUsldXA]
Lockjaw The Inhumans.
Gifted. Now with 42% more correct link.
The Defenders + Punisher Reveal, or more appropriately known as The Stan Lee Trailer.
Thor: Ragnarok International Trailer 2. Now with 14% more Thori the Hel Hound. Looks like the Hulk persona has some merging with Banner. That's Surtur revealed at the end, who will be voiced by Clancy Brown.
Death Note Light meets Willem Dafoe
Michelle Pfeiffer will be Janet Van Dyne, the original Wasp in Ant-Man and the Wasp. Hot. Also joining the cast will be Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost (a neat villain), Walton Goggins will be Sonny Burch (A Cross Tech chairman. We'll see.) and Lawrence Fishbone will play Bill Foster, aka Goliath (Kind of an "old" choice for the character, so I'd assume an acquaintance of Hank Pym before retiring). That's quite the cast.
Little bit of confirmation involving Captain Marvel. It'll be a period piece, set in the 90s, and the Skrulls will be involved. If you don't know who they are, they're a bunch of green, ridge-chinned shapeshifting aliens, who were kind of involved with the Silver Surfer Fantastic Four movie. Some concept art of Brie Larson as Captain Marvel fighting what appears to be some Kree Jobbers. As I said since this project was announced: As long as they don't use that stupid helmet I'll be fine with pretty much whatever direction they go.
Iron Fist and Daredevil both got renewed for another season, no surprise. Though Iron Fist did get a bit of a creative shakeup behind the scenes by picking up a different showrunner. Buck is out, and Raven Metzner is taking over. He worked on Sleepy Hollow, so I imagine extreme hype with lackluster payoff.

I'm looking forward to those shows (Gifted, Inhumans) more than I am Justice League.
That Trailer for Thor Ragnorak was the first one I've watched so far. It is so... colorful. Makes me think of a Scooby Doo movie where KISS is going to show up and start singing. The villain even have spikey helmet thingies. Seems that GotG is rubbing off on the other Marvel Universe movies.
I did not care for last week's Preacher. Kind of boring. Hope they make up for it tonight.
The Mist... why did they make the mother such a horrible character? The worst kind of stereotypical female character.
Rick and Morty finally starts up this Sunday. They've only shown S3 Ep1 about 2,500 times since April 1st. I do like that Trailer song though.
My local theater has been crappy with the last couple weekend showtime schedules. No Noon or early afternoon showings for Valerian or Planet of the Apes, so I haven't gone. Looks like I'll wait until August 4th and see Dark Tower. Maybe I'll invite my parents. Give my mom a preview of the (potentially) new Randall Flagg. She's keeps asking me every couple weeks about The Stand movies ever since I told her of the possibility of them making them. She wasn't too keen on the idea of Mcconaughey possibly playing him. But maybe he'll do a good enough job in Dark Tower.
I did not care for last week's Preacher. Kind of boring. Hope they make up for it tonight.
I'm a little disappointed with how the Saint of Killers storyline has been going, but now that he's been incapacitated for the time being maybe they'll dig into the Holy Grail and Herr Starr, which I'm hoping gets really outlandish and over-the-top.
The first four episodes of The Defenders seems to have been released to reviewers, and from what they're saying they start slow to pick up but enjoyable, and most notably that while Finn Jones still doesn't look like an expert martial artist he is doing better here than in Iron Fist. The Hallway Fightâ„¢ is talked about being particularly well done, as to be expected, with each of the four main characters displaying their own distinct fighting styles. And that the hallway itself is actually well lit.
For whoever is interested, Daniel Craig will continue being Bond into at least the next movie.
Ready Player One trailer I forgot. Easter Eggs: The Movie.

So, Ready Player One. I just don't get the hype over this. A work buddy wouldn't shut up about the book to the point that he eventually brought in his copy and practically forced me to read it. It wasn't terrible, but it also wasn't very good. The writing was amateurish, the plot was painfully cliched and predictable, and most of the characters were shallow as f*ck. I suppose all the '80s nostalgia bits were fairly well researched and weren't terribly implemented, but that only carries so far. Honestly, the entire thing felt like '80s based fan fiction that got out of hand. The trailer for the movie version didn't do much for me either.
