I Need to know...

Ok, serious now! I'm just getting used to pally healing in Cata, which leads to not being all that careful with mana, forgetting to judge, or simply using the wrong spell on the wrong person.

So out of desperation I found myself starting to melee whenever I get the opportunity in order to gain some extra blue juice.

Needless to say that the first time I did it, I felt a whole lot like a Moonkin back in the day... Melee for mana.

Is this legitimate, or what? I have yet to see anybody else doing it.

Delinja used to whack stuff over the head so he could maintain enough mana for us to 3-man Onyxia back in the days of Wrath of the Lich King.

To be honest, I don't know if it's still legitimate today, but Seal of Insight does return mana on hit, so I don't see why not. It might not be useful if you're almost non-stop casting heal, and one could argue that if you're not non-stop casting then you shouldn't have mana issues, but I don't see why you shouldn't be able to, if you want.

It's perfectly valid. You should be judging for Seal procs as much as feasible, and hitting a melee-friendly boss is a natural extention. Some people even go so far as to suggest crusader strikes to generate more HP, but that seems a bit excessive to me. Plus, there are some phases of some fights (like Magmaw head phase) that just beg for it.

You might also adjust your spell selection - reduce/drop Flash, more HL if you're healing through Beacon (now that 100% transfers), make sure you HS practically on cooldown to maximize HP, and use the HP for (specced into buffs?) WoG rather than flashlight - especially in 10-mans. I know I got out of the habit of finding transition phases to use DP in, but that's a big return as well.

Also some fights the boss has an abnormally large hitbox, you might as well face them and give em a good whack on the side to get some mana back. Beats having to blow Divine Plea in the middle of an intensive fight if you can get a couple whacks off and gain some mana while saving your cooldown for maybe a break period.
