Patch 4.1 and youFollow

Talent Specializations

Discipline
- Absolution (new passive) enables priests to use Dispel Magic on up to 2 harmful effects on friendly targets.
- Atonement now works with Holy Fire in addition to Smite.
- The direct damage portion of Holy Fire can now trigger Evangelism.
- Power Word: Barrier's cooldown has been increased to 3 minutes, up from 2, and its effect has been reduced to 25%, down from 30%.
- It is now possible to remove Weakened Soul effects that were a result of another priest's Power Word: Shield through Strength of Soul.

Holy

- Chakra now lasts until canceled, up from 1 minute.
- Surge of Light can now also trigger from Binding Heal.

Glyphs

I suppose SoL from binding heal. Someone asked me last week why I don't use my own lightwell much. Cos I like binding heal, it gives me serendipity.

The holy fire stuff is a nice little bonus for the atonement spec.

These are mostly changes I don't like, but this will help me:

Runners up are Chakra, Inner Will, and Inner Fire lasting until canceled. Much more convenient.

Will most likely go back to Holy when 4.1 goes live.

I like the Holy Fire changes the best.

I dislike losing offensive dispel the most. Or maybe the PW:S nerf with no accompanying change to Rapture

All signs point to you not losing offensive dispel. The notes are worded horribly because they never mention offensive dispels at all, and they certainly make it look that that can't happen anymore. But word is that the PTR tooltip says you can still dispel offensively (1 effect only). IOW, the dispel changes are entirely meant to keep Shadow priests from defensively dispelling their teammates.

Chakra wasn't buffed so much as made e-z-mode to keep up.

The PW:B thing was because of 25 mans, same as all of the Disc nerfs.

Chakra was never really hard to keep up. Then it was easy when they changed it to a flat 60 seconds rather than having to make sure you cast the state's corresponding spell in time. If they're going to make it that simple, I don't see any reason it should be different from a Paladin's auras. Holy still has plenty of buttons to push without there being a need to make the spec "interesting" by making juggling chakra states "challenging."

What I really want to know is what they're going to do with State of Mind now. Didn't they promise us no useless talents in Cata?

My main question mark is at the 'why make Chakra so easy to keep up?'. Obviously holy priests were seriously damn hard to play completely right, and it helps with the bloat in that sense, but... Chakra was one of their easiest mechanics in the first place - the way it is now, like you pointed out, they're better off just turning Chakra into paladin Auras.

You ask a good question though - the way I see it there's two options for a new State of Mind. Option A), it turns into a small stat bonus - 'whenever Chakra is up, you gain X amount of stat Y', option B), they nerf Chakra and put some of its stuff into State of Mind. As in a plain heal Chakra doesn't do anything else but give you access to HW:Serenity, while the State of Mind talent re-adds the 10% crit chance on single target heals.

Wait...does this mean when I cast Holy Fire my tank will be healed for the same amount as the damage I deal to the mob? Well, once my baby disc priest is high enough level to get Atonement that is.

If so this is amazing.

My disc priest is only level 15, but these changes look awesome.

That's exactly what it means. Also don't forget Glyph of Smite and Glyph of Divine Accuracy, and yes, it's awesome.

I have my focus frame just above my raid frames, along with the focus target. Then with the tank as focus, I can easily clickcast holy fire and smite on what ever the tank has targeted.

O.O (I can't do emoticons or I'd do the jaw-dropping one). That glyph basically means Smite and Holy Fire won't ever miss.

As I said, my priest is only lvl 15. Me and a couple guildies are doing a group where we only level together and only level through instances. My tank is a pally tank so between WoG and Smite/Holy Fire spam I probably won't even need to do any real healing.

I need to figure out how to a target of target macro now, though, so I can just keep the mobs targetted and click on Penance or whatever other heal I need without having to untarget the mob.

A lot of people will dual purpose a macro, saying if I click on a friendly target cast a healing spell, or if I click on a hostile target cast smite. Another way to go would be to cast smite on your friendly target's hostile target.

I don't think you will find many people who simply keep the hostile mob targeted then cast heal at who ever they are looking at. Healing is more dynamic than that. While I can say that I will smite the tank's target, I can't say I will always heal the bosses target. Heals, shields, and hots are cast on the party member that needs it, whether or not the boss is targeting him.

The nice thing about smite healing is that it is a smart heal. You smite away, and the lowest health target in range will get the heal. It will rotate around party members as needed if more than one is taking damage. At the point I need to cast a direct heal, I simply click on the friendly target needing it, then click back on the hostile target. Remember that I said I focus on the tank, so his hostile target is always there waiting for me to click on it. I don't actually have to find the mob visually.

I keep a macro button on my action bar to set focus on my target if I left click it, or clear focus if I right click it. That way I can quickly set focus on anything I want. A hotkeyed focus macro for mind control and shackle undead is also a good Idea.

I really have fun playing disc. I even made my second spec disc as well, with more emphasis on reflective shield and pvp talents. The patch will give us some more holy fire goodness, although decreasing shield time will put an end to my pre-shielding a group.

Ok, so how would I write a macro to:

Cast Heal on my target if I just press the 3 key (just picking a random key)

or

Cast Smite on my target of target if I press alt-3

Personally, I use this macro for my Smiting needs. If someone needs actual healing I'll use Penance, GH or PW:S. Heal sucks it is just there so the macro falls through to something useful if the tank isn't targeting anything.

You could do that with regular keybindings, but what I meant was that you simply press 3 and use a macro like

/cast [help] Heal; [harm] smite

That macro casts on your target, but you could use a mouseover macro so that you wouldn't need to actually click your mouse and target before pressing 3.

I personally don't keybind all my spells. I keybind a few hot buttons like fade and mind control, but click cast most healing spells, as well as holy fire and smite.

Personally, I use the Clique addon to do this. I am using it with Grid at the moment as my healing frames, but click works with the blizz frames, or just about any other you might choose. Eventually, you will be wanting to use a good healing raid frames, so you can more easily see things like aggro, your hots, dispelable debufs, and raid debufs.

Edit:
Horsemouth above me gave a little more complete and complex macro. I've just gone over my left click macro, and simplified it a bit to this:

/target mouseover
/cast [dead] Resurrection; [nopet,harm] smite; [nopet,help] Power Word: Shield

The [nopet] allows me to target friendly players when I am mind controlling a healer, without shielding and breaking the mind control when I click on them.

I've never healed at all before so I'm not sure I could get used to click casting or mouseover macros. I also don't plan on downloading any healing mods like Clique or Healbot or Grid because I play all 10 classes and this priest is my only healer and I don't want to have a mod for just 1 class.

@Horsemouth, I just used Heal as an example. I'll put whichever healing spell makes the most sense in there, probably Greater Heal.

That's what Body and Soul does currently on live. The PTR had either a nerf to the power or a tooltip error, which was reverted/corrected.

Holy Fire change is pretty sweet, not sure how sweet as Recount and MSBT don't work. Waiting for add ons to stabilize before I try the new stuff out.

I have been waiting for this patch to start a new priest alt. I have never healed so it will be a nice change. I know that you can level in any spec, but I can't decide between disc and holy. The nerf to PW:S made me lean to holy, but perhaps I am overreacting. Any advice would be most welcome.

For leveling, if not shadow, go disc. The pw:shield going to 15 sec duration isn't a big deal. It just makes pre shielding an entire 5 man group less attractive. For yourself or tank, it is still just as effective and useful, as well as for slowing incoming damage on a group member. I still love the way disc plays.

Plus, now holy fire does healing! Get the devine accuacy and smite glyphs and be a dps healing machine. I loaded x-perl and set focus on the tank, and show his target. Clique lets me dps his target by click casting HF, Smite, and popping my wings.

It is really fun.

Although the divine accuracy glyph isn't necessary until you start running heroics or raiding. :-)
