Fire spec, now and in Cata.Follow

#1 Sep 28 2010 at 4:41 PM Rating: Decent
I'm currently working on my mage (lvl 20,) and so far all I've seen are frost and arcane mages. So I was wondering if fire is a viable spec for all incarnations of "raids" (5 man normal to 25 man heroic.) Also, since we get a respec when Cata. comes out fire seems to be a rather good DPS but I've had no honest to goodness way to test this.

Fire is definitely viable in raids and dungeons. Its only real downfall is that multiple of its abilities(ignite and living bomb, for instance), require enemies to live long enough for the abilities to take full effect. This is something of a downside on trash mobs that can die in a few seconds, but on bosses, it doesn't present much of a problem.

On live, according to WoL, fire is actually the top DPS spec. Come Cata, who knows?

Fire looks really fun to play in the Beta and appears to put out nice DPS. Cauterize looks stupid powerful as a survival tool. Still wouldn't use the Fire tree for leveling except perhaps to play around with LB spam and Blastwave/Flamestrike on some huge packs.

My mage has some rather horrid gear for a level 80. I logged onto the PTR last night to mess around with fire, and much to my surprise I pulled 5400 DPS in a fight against one of the new encounters for the pre-Cata event. This was done knowing very little about a fire rotation (Hey, I've been Arcane!), and without my normal bindings.

My thoughts on it? Scorch is insane. Quick little spell that you can cast while moving with talents, doing 5K a shot. Oh, and it's free and freaking FAST. All I did was spam the hell out of it and fire of Pyroblast when it procced. I loved it. Considering the last time I used Fire on my mage (August of 2007), I will definitely have this as one of my specs. It's just so much fun.

Fire is fine, but if you are lvling (lvl 20) then you would benifit from Frost. People will tell you all different things, but Frost is the best spec to level with. You get way more control.

Once you hit level Cap (You will never hit Level cap at the current content cap - you will be 85) you can really solo as any spec because you'll be so much stronger, but when you are running around in the 20, 30, etc. areas - you'll have more luck as frost.

Having said that - you can absoluely raid, solo, PVP, etc as Fire...

it depends heavily on whether you're a new player

If this is alt #4 or 5, go fire at some point to get a taste of it, it will be fun... unless your goal is to level asap

The "feel" of fire and frost are very different, and it's a lot of fun experiencing both.

Everyone says 'go frost,' so that's mostly what you see (sheeple). The best spec is the one you have the most fun with. I levelled my mage fire all the way. When dungeoning with groups that outgear you and/or the content, your dps will suffer because of the time factor mentioned above. All things equal, fire does very well. The non-fire spells in combo do very well indeed.
