weapon question I don't understandFollow

I only recently started doing dungeons, and was very happy to get the Trophy Gatherer from a dungeon.

Today I got to do Utgarde something-or-other and got the following crossbow: Drake-Mounted Crossbow which SEEMS, by all logic, to have better stats.

However, when I equip the latter and look at my ranged stats, my "crit. chance" drops from 24% with the Trophy Gatherer, to just over 9% with the slightly faster Drake-Mounted Crossbow.

I'm just completely confused.

My "crit. rating" (when I mouse over the stat in the pane) is 601 with the former, and 606 with the latter.
Both give me "+13.09% and 13.20% (respectively) crit. chance" when I mouse over, but the stat in the column to the right is radically different for each. The crit chance is 13.20% which is higher, on the crossbow... so why does the number in the column to the right say only "9% crit. chance"?

There's obviously something I'm not understanding about how stats work.

Both have the same scope on them. The crossbow is a tiny bit faster. It sure does more DPS.
The crossbow has more attack power, while the bow has armor pen. Does that make a difference to crit chance?

I seriously need help here, because I'm not understanding how the stats work and this is confusing me for when I get upgrades to my gear.

Crit aside the Drake Mounted Cross bow is just all around better. It has higher damage as well as dps, you receive agi stats and not stam. You get ap over haste which if I recall you are probably a new 80, the 22 arp isn't going to do much for you right now anyways.

As for your actual question about the crit. I'm not quite sure, if anything it should increase your crit with the crossbow, can you post an armory link with the crossbow equipped?

There is a good chance that you xbow skill is just wayyy behind, so values on your character sheet should increase as you bring your weapon skill up.

THIS!

Most probably your crossbow skill is much lower than bow - I had the same with moving from gun (70 levels of pewpewing) to crossbow in the end of TBC :)

AGH! Yes, that MUST be it! LOL
I had never used x-bow before.
I spent a bit last night leveling it to cap (it went surprisingly fast, since I'm also leveling a new pet Kurken and farming leather in Sholazar).

Sadly I never thought of that. I just usually figure it's all leveled.

So remember if you ever find a gun, remember that you probably need to level it first or your stats might be all wonky.

I think they're taking out skills in Cata, but don't quote me on that.

That would be nice but I don't see why it's really necessary. It is kind of more realistic. If I were to pick up a sword IRL I wouldn't automatically master it. So the same could be said for WoW. Plus it's not hard at all to skill up stuff while leveling. Most often you switch items enough that what you need by 80-85 will be max or close enough to max where you won't miss or have any damage reduction.

Though as for hunters we don't need to worry about our stat stick being leveled. Though if he had that much crit drop from not having bows leveled then maybe we do.

More on this topic:

I got a new x-bow on another toon, and decided, just for fun, to open the character pane while playing (and leveling x-bow skills).

Every time my x-bow skill went up one point, the percent on my crit chance went up by .02.

so that was most definitely the culprit for the skewered crit chance numbers.
