60 rogue seeks helpFollow

I've gotten my latest toon up to 60 now and am finding the rogue class to be a lot of fun so far but it certainly doesn't seem to be one of the ez-mode classes. I can work out solo stuff on my own so I'm not too worried about all that. I haven't been chain-queueing for dungeons but I have done quite a few through the levels so far.

My DPS is bad. Usually near the bottom of the group, which is something I'm really not accustomed to. I feel like I don't even know which attacks I should be using. I just got killing spree, and have . . .blade frenzy is it? (attacks 2 targets) but they're both on 2 min cd's and otherwise zero AoE abilities. I usually just end up alternating sinister/eviscerate because that's all I have time to get in before the mage doing triple my damage has blizzarded the pack halfway down.

Is there some sort of rotation or priority list I should be using? The only guide I see was written pre-Wrath.

Currently specced Combat with 2 BoA daggers.

Nobody in my (admittedly small) guild has a rogue and I don't actually know anybody who plays one so I'm hoping for some kind of tips.

I wouldn't worry about your trash DPS in instances - it doesn't really matter, and you're always going to lose out to stronger AoE classes until you pick up Fan of Knives later on. Just pay attention to your damage on boss fights, and leave the DPS chart epeen-waving to the kiddies :)

Combat rotations haven't really changed much in Wrath. Put simply, keep Slice n Dice up, SS to five combo points, then Rupture or Eviscerate (at your level, Rupture probably wins), throwing in your cooldowns when available. You'll almost never get to 5CP on trash, so just try to keep SnD up, spam SS, and Evis if you happen to get enough CPs before the mob dies.

One problem you have is that you're in Combat spec with two daggers. Sinister Strike is your main attack, and it really needs a slow, hard-hitting main hand weapon. Either try to pick up a main-hand fist weapon to go with one of your daggers, or alternatively, how about respeccing to Mutilate and seeing how that goes?

Thanks for the input.

Slice n dice . . .I've hardly ever used. The haste buff as opposed to actual damage never seemed worth it but I'll try that out.

Tactics-wise, should I be trying to stealth behind a pack and trying to get an ambush or garotte, or is that not worth the time taken to get there? Should I be waiting for backstab when behind mobs or using the cheaper sinister? Is rupture something I should ever be using or just stick with eviscerate and s&d to use points?

On bosses I think I usually garotte>rupture>backstab>expose>backstab>eviscerate or something similar. Is that even close to what I should be doing?

I know nothing about mulilate but I'll look into it.

"Keep SnD up" is one of the golden rules for Combat DPS. Haste may seem boring, but a lot of our damage comes off auto-attacks, and speeding them up is always a good thing :)

I wouldn't bother stealthing for trash packs - many tanks won't like you cheap-shotting mobs, and Garotte's unlikely to get full damage on trash. For bosses, it depends how much time you lose, and whether you have to wait for the tank to build threat before you start attacking. If threat's not an issue, I wouldn't bother stealthing if it means you lose DPS time.

For Combat spec, once you change to a fist mainhand (or respec to Hack-n-Slash with a slow MH and fast OH, sword or axe), Backstab won't be an option, just stick to Sinister Strike. If you switch to Mutilate, you won't be using Backstab either, and Mutilate replaces SS.

As a very, very simple summary, you'll be building CPs with SS, and spending them on SnD (3CPs seems to fit for most cycles, but keep an eye on it, and find what works best for you), Rupture, or Evis if Rupture is still ticking. Try to wait for 5CPs to use your damaging finishers.

Expose Armor is very situational - can be good if your tank isn't already applying an armour debuff, and you have a lot of physical DPS in the party, but in general I'd stick to using your damaging finishers.

There's obviously a lot more to maximising your DPS, but it seems like you're just after a basic rundown at this point. If you want to go more in-depth, try searching for discussions on "Rogue energy pooling" for a start, or head over to Elitist Jerks for some scary math :P
