I'm wondering if a hybrid dps/heals support role would be actually viable now.

It's got me thinking.

Judging by the druid trees, I think they're trying to push that sort of hybrid build. I don't see it working very well, though. Hybrid classes work fine, hybrid roles rarely do.

From what I see Smite spec wants Penance as well.

This might be a more DPS version I like more.

edit: Regardless, I love new Disc and it is what I thought Disc was going to be in Wrath. (source) A healer/DPS/awesomeness hybrid spec.

Suck it Moz :P. Also I might be psychic.

The page you're trying to visit seems to be painfully and tearfully crashing. No worries mate.

Your link, it fails.

I refuse to get involved with the Cata talent trees until it gets a lot closer to release. I mean, look at it. That can't be where it'll end up. Lightwell is still there, unchanged. It's totally pointless to discuss it at this point.

But if I were looking at it, which I'm not, I'd do something like this. And if I were allowing myself to get excited, which I'm not, I'd be especially excited about Atonement. The change to Focused Power is interesting as well. I don't use MC enough, and I suspect it's one of the things that differentiates the good PVP priests from me.

Putting so many of the Smite talents in the Disc tree and having the one in the Holy tree be in the first tier is smart. Now if only they'd put Body & Soul in Disc, we'd be good to go. Smiley: nod

I already feel as though my Disc/Searing Light spec has great offensive capability for such a strong healer. It's one of the things that makes me prefer my priest to other healers. Solidifying that with so much Smitey goodness is only going to make me happier.

Edited to fix link.

Edited again because I can't fix the link. It won't keep Focused Will filled in no matter what I do. My last 3 points go there.

Yeah, all the calculators out right now completely gloss over the extra tags on a lot of the talents. More than half in the priest trees have [NYI] (not yet implemented) or similar.

Maybe. I may or may not actually know this. >.>

Penance while moving? Oh **** yeah!
#10 Jun 10 2010 at 8:46 AM Rating: Good
Those are all pvp talents, note they only increase DAMAGE done by Penance, not healing.

Archangel is also a cooldown.

Wait, what? I love these changes =P I don't exactly see how they're going to make the smiting work yet, but I really really like the idea. Especially since currently I already find myself doing a lot of smiting on a lot of encounters.

On an additional note... I've skimmed over the holy tree again and came to the following conclusion: holy+smiting talents is only useful if you've got a shadow spec. If you're gonna go with disc/holy dual specs, you'll want the smite talents in your disc spec and for your holy spec... simply do what we do now - grab EVERYTHING in the holy tree and don't go into disc any higher than Inner Focus.

Me being the priest I am, I did some more research. I suspect this to be the disc cookie cutter for what we currently have. Yes, that is a Smite glyph there - how awesome is that? The disc build works out nicely due to the fact that you've got Penance. You don't badly need those mana-reducing talents, you don't need Improved Renew since PW:S fills that role, and while picking up Deliverance could be nifty, you don't need speedy heals - you've got Penance. With all those talents, in IcC-25 gear, you'll be looking at what would now be 7K+ non-crit Smites. Before gaining any stacks of Evangelism. Which, with crits and the glyph buff included, I believe would result in an average of 5 to 6K DPS. Which in turn is 2.5 to 3K smart-HPS. Which already looks fairly balanced on paper.

As for holy... A holy priest can, if he really wants to, do the Smite trick as wel, but he will have to drop some of the obscene amounts of utility holy now has. Whether that's an improved Renew, Choir Leader (my personal choice, it's nice but not a necessity), Body & Soul or Improved Holy Nova is pretty much their own choice, though. If you're a disc/holy priest though, you already have the Smite trick in your disc spec and I'd purely go for all the utility I could get, more like so, possibly even dropping PW:B or Improved Healing for Test of Faith.

Long story short, it'll come down mostly to preference, like Blizzard did promise. You have more than enough points to pick up all the 'must-have' talents and what you'll be shuffling with is the fun utility ones. Holy priests have a tougher time than disc priests in 'grabbing everything they want', though, since A) Archangel is so far up the disc tree and B) I'm keeping one point in the back of my mind for Lightwell, assuming they finally get around to making it worthwhile. Disc/holy priests will have it easier than holy/shadow priests in any case, though.

Obviously, we don't know what is going to be changed and how it's going to be done, but these words really are a good summary of my thoughts so far.

Edit: Great - the Wowhead editor is bugged and the MMO-champion editor can't link. I'll edit in better links lateron, when those sites get their stuff working.

Edit2: Edited in the right builds.

Taking the 'lol' out of 'lolsmite'?

The design seems somewhat... counter-intuitive for making a 'pure' healing spec. Most builds I tried making at ended up having points go to the smite-heal talents because of lack of better options (Granted, I'm a PvE disc guy, so I tend to gloss over "after being hit/crit" talents). It kinda feels like the ArchAngel talent line was designed mostly with PvP in mind, unless the Dev's really want us to smite as part of our healing rotation. Which goes back to my point about it being counter-intuitive.

Chakra made me rethink smitespec.
So here is the new and improved version of the spec: 22/54/0 with PW: Barrier and Archangel.

+12% damage to smite
-0.5 sec cast time
+20% hit
Surge of Light
+15% damage for 20 seconds after 3 consecutive smite casts.
+15% smite crit
+4% damage and -6% cost on holy nova, smite and holy fire whenever you cast smite, stacking up to 5 times for +20% damage and -30% cost.
15% of total mana return/+15% healing done when consuming the stack mentioned above, 15 sec cooldown and unknown duration.

This all adds up to 1.12*1.15*1.20 = 1.5456, or 54.56% additional damage from smite.
Or 85.472% additional damage from smite with the holy fire DoT up. (assuming Smite glyph stays)
With it also becoming more mana efficient and autohealing for 45% of the damage it does it becomes quite a cool spell.

Add to that imp. shields, body and soul, guardian angel and CoH and Smite Spec is looking pretty good for a heroic/leveling spec.

Edit: Assuming that Lightwell will change to something similar to the ToC priests have, Smite Spec is an autohealing spec.
Shield the tank, PoM him, drop lightwell and start nuking and you're also healing.
Holy Nova to AoE (much more effective with boosted healing, damage and a 1 sec GCD) which also heals people.
I'm liking this.

Beware though, Power Word: Barrier might mess up your rotation--it takes one Unholy Rune.

Join random group.

DPS: lolwut? y r u smiting?
US: It helps me heal.
DPS: wtf? let's kick this noob
US: No, really! I have talents that make me use smite to heal!
*Message not sent. You are no longer in a party*
US: ...well fsck.

I mean, shielding been changed and we still get some grief about shielding the tank. Imagine how what it's going to take to sell smiteheals to the... uh.. less than gifted players.

I wonder how long before we hear GC say,

"If a group is getting on you for using smite as a Discipline priest (or jeez even a Holy priest) you have my permission to say "GC says you're doing it wrong."

I've gotten complaints about shielding by a priest in ICC25. I get them far too often in various raids.

I nearly always smite in Heroics. HoR is probably the only exception, and groups with abysmally bad tanks. I have never gotten any complaints about that.

The new Disc stuff really makes me hope they clean up how the combat log works so absorbs, shields and other off sources of healing can be easily accounted for by the standard Recount add-on.

If not who cares, I'm the GM of my guild and can always organize raid runs; so the haters can just suck it for all I care.
