Wanting to start a rogue, have a few questionsFollow

I was thinking of starting a rogue because I hear they are good for both solo and pvp. I just had a few questions. Why did you pick a rogue? I hear since there are so many rogues that its hard to get into an instance group, is that true? And also, can they solo elite quests or do they need a group more? Thank you.

I don't know where you're getting your info but you're off, way off.

Rogues are one of the more gear dependent solo toons and aren't very fast levelers without heirloom or high end gear. As far as being overpopulated, Rogues are probably the least represented class on every server I have played on, at least in PvE. I have yet to be in a group with two rogues, unless it was a guildy. As far as elites and group quests, you won't be soloing them at an equal level any time soon.

Mainly as a reaction to what I did before. I used to play a healing priest on a PvE server. Nothing ever worked out for him, the raiding guilds were full of big meanies and eventually I just went "well eff that altogether", decided I wanted to play a toon for ME, and rolled a Troll rogue on an RP server. I found myself enjoying the class so much that I stuck with it.

No, not really. Especially with the new LFG system, everyone gets into an instance group easily enough. But even past that - the amount of rogues seems to have shrunk a bit. They used to be the most played class in the game, but ever since TBC and WOTLK hit their numbers seem to have slowly been declining. They're still probably not the least played class in the game, but they're not as 'overpopulated' as they used to be anymore.

Ehm, that depends. One would say that rogues are extremely good at soloing because of all their CC and nifty little tricks, but the catch is that none of these work on elites. They're all immune to stuns and incapacitate effects, and Vanishing just resets the mob rather than giving you a chance at another opener.

On the other hand, stealth *does* allow you to bypass a ******** of mobs. There are a couple of "Kill X guys of race Y and also kill their leader, Clevername Beastlymob" - these quests are extremely satisfying to do as a rogue, because even though Clevername Beastlymob generally has two bodyguards, it is usually quite possible to sneak in, open up hard on his ***, kill him, loot him, and Vanish the hell out of there. Saving you a lot of time.

So yes, and no. Rogues are pretty good at soloing long quests or specific bosses, but will be simply completely unable to solo most pure elites due to the fact that half their abilities don't work on those mobs: which leads to the rogue just standing there, taking the hits, trying to outDPS the elite - something you won't ever manage to do. If you were, say, a hunter, or a mage, you could do some nifty kiting and still come out the victor. Rogues lack that capability.

To be honest, I could argue a lot about this. For one, rogues have very little downtime. Second, rogues have *no* downtime and kill in seconds once they reach 50 and get Mutilate - at that point they are probably the fastest leveling class in the game. Third, you've got so much panic buttons that rogues rarely die while soloing. You overpull as a warrior? You better kill them all, and fast, or you're scewed. You overpull as a rogue? Vanish!

I've never really felt my rogue to be that gear dependant, safe for needing to have decent weapons at the maximum level before your DPS becomes even mildly interesting. They are certainly not as horrible as warriors, for one, though.

I think more than anything they're REALLY ANNOYING in PvP. I don't think they're *better* than any other class at PvP, people just remember when a good rogue locks them down and there's nothing they can do but die. Gives the impression they're way OP, and consequently has keep them from getting a lot of stuff because their stunlock is so powerful and especially when combined with other classes that can do high damage.

At solo, they're not as good as say, hunter or deathknight, but if you like the playstyle, they're just plain fun. I love the sneaky playstyle so they may not be as fast as some other classes, but I'm having a good time doing it.

Ebil sneaky!! That's it really, I like stealth.

Not in the slightest. Rogues are actually underplayed right now. Since hybrids now don't have much damage penalty and you basically get multiple characters in one, hybrids have become much more populated and "pure" classes much less. Except mage. People still love playing mage.

From everything I've seen, they're much worse at soloing elites than other classes. On my paladin I can solo 3 or more man elite mobs fairly easily. I can take down the undead dragon for the Argent Tournament quest for instance no problem. Not a chance of that on my rogue.

Stunlocks just don't work well on elites and your cooldowns don't last long enough to save you. Unlike PvP, vanish resets mobs unless you're very very quick too. Rogues have lost a lot of things due to PvP stunlock ability.

Man, I figured leveling my rogue in 6 days was fast... and this was before heirloom items.

As for your question OP, getting into instances by using the LFG system isn't very hard anymore. The only issue is the wait time with dps, so really... it's just the way it is. As mentioned above, soloing elite quests really all depend. I was able to solo the Colossus quest in Hellfire but others I had a hard time with.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I figured it's better than starting a completely new one. I had a quick question for you xNocturnalSunx. Did you level your rogue to the cap in 6 days /played, or 6 days as in a little under a week? I've been wanting a rogue at the 80 cap, and it's sitting at level 30 and has been for quite some time now. Thing is, it's on a brand new server, so no heirlooms, like yours was. If you were able to get yours up to 80 in just a little under a week, I'm game to blast through it with what little time of summer I have left. But if it took you 6 days /played, I'd rather not indulge myself in it then have to suddenly give it up really working on it because of it school.

Going to guess 6 days played, since Noc isn't much of a power player (and neither am I, I can't sit still for that long).

Ah, ok. Guess I won't have another 80 til sometime later in the future. That'd be awesome if you could level a rogue without heirlooms in a week though :P

Yeah, it was 6 days played. If I had the time and nothing to do, then I'm sure I can powerlevel a toon within a week.

And Theo knows I can't sit still on one toon for too long. With my altitis and all =P

A level a day keeps the jitters away... across a dozen alts...
