My DK is 80, I'm dual specced Blood tank / Unholy dps and I'm busy working on getting him geared to tank heroics.

My DK (link) but to be honest don't pay much attention to the gear, its a work in progress.

Currently have 22k HP in frost presence, still under 540 def and 26 expertise.

I know the gear, stats etc I should be looking to collect from 5mans, I figure I'm going to tank my way through them to get some practise in and dodge the LFG queues, but I'm not sure the order I should go about it... I've been tanking normal 5 mans successfuly so far and was thinking this was the way to go:

normal 5mans -> farm normal ToC -> farm normal ICC 5mans -> random heroics for emblems.

Does that look right? Once I get 540 def, what HP should I aim for before hitting the next step of content?

I'm currently working on 'repairing' my tank set as I've not been playing for some time, so I see where you're coming from. Although I tanked Naxx, Sarth and a few bosses in Ulduar and therefore should have no probs tanking heroics, most PUGs now arent happy unless their tank outgears the instance enough to faceroll the whole thing.

The method I'm using is to queue as DPS (I'm guessing your DPS spec is better geared than your tank) and farming EoT to build tank gear. Seems to be the fastest way. If you have a good guild, try and do some runs with them with you tanking for the practice, DK tanking takes a while to get the hang of.

As to your order, I think you may be able to skip from farming normal 5 man to heroics. As I understand it, the LFG tool will only queue you for instances you have gear for. So you're not going to queue for heroics and suddenly end up in HoR.

You should be able to tank most heroics with 535 DEF, but I'd still shoot for 540. Also get at least 25k HP (closer to 30 is better). As I said though the real problem is randoms expecting to be able to charge through the content.

The sad truth is that people are much more tolerant of bad DPS than they are of an "undergeared" tank or healer. I mean, after all they get to stroke their epeen when they can say that they "out-dps'd" someone by 100%

Just run as DPS and hit a billion random heroics. Grab whatever gear you can from them, especially from the heroic ICC dungeons, and fill in the gaps in your gear with emblem pieces.

An average item level of about 213-219 should bring you up to 30k-35k health all unbuffed. From that point on all but heroic Halls of Drama should be easily possible, both in terms of survivability and threat. If that place comes up, just ask people if they want to try with you or else just leave or have them kick you.

If I had a tank with 15K health I'd hunt them down and stab them in the eye. My MAGE has more health than that.
