What Raids Can I Do as Tank?Follow

#1 Mar 23 2010 at 12:48 AM Rating: Decent
Hello there everyone, I'm thinking about coming back to WoW sometime soon after being away since last October. I have not experienced any raids yet, but I ran many heroic 5-man's in the pursuit of gear and badges. I know there are new 5-man's available now in Ice Crown Citadel, which would probably get me some more upgrades, but as of right now, what raids would you say I am ready to tank? If not, what do I need to do to get better prepared?

Also, any advice pertaining to my spec and other things would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!

EDIT: (Armory was down - my general notes are useless now that it is back up.)

You can tank Anything upto and including Ulduar with no problem. ToC will be a challenge. ICC may be stretching it.

You seem to have a lot of Hit Gems and stuff that I don't carry... Plus if you add up all the "Blue Quality" Stamina Gems and replace them with Epic gems... You could get a healthy boost in HP.

Run Regular HOR for the shield. It's a nice little upgrade to the H.CoS shield.
Try to get 4 pieces - I used to think it wasn't that big, but I honestly like the 4p T9.

Google: Wow Heroes - It will tell you more.

A couple things you can do right away, replace all your yellow/orange gems with enduring gems(def+stam) for your 1 red gem to activate meta use anything you want, generally agi or dodge+stam is the way to go. If you want more hit use a wpn chain as hopefully you'll be upgrading that wpn soon, otherwise toss a +26 agi enchant on it in the mean time. Also a def or stam enchant on your shield, either is pretty cheap. Spec looks ok except 3 pts in divine sac>divinity. Also as you have a crapton of heroics to run to gear up I'd definitely spec into seal of command as its very nice for heroics.

WoW-Heroes tells me that you can do Ony, 10-man TotCr and 25 man Uld.

Of those, only the first two are run on most servers with any frequency, considering you can easily add another 300 to your gear score using emblem gear.

Run some heroics and once you get your GS to 2500 or so, you'll be ready to start doing ICC 10 mans.

Running VOA 10/25 will also give you some frost emblems (2, I think) and a chance at T10.

Awesome, thanks for all the advice guys! Would you guys recommend I just completely stop pursuing hit rating then? I know that if it's not very high, my threat could suffer and dps as well.

Also, I looked at the Armory of your Paladin tank Mahlerite and noticed that you have a decent amount of DPS gear on, which is awesome! Did you do this because you already have the defense cap and can afford to use these other damage dealing pieces of gear? Or is there another reason?

Yes in my 'real' tank gear i have like 580def so for non challenging situations(5mans, certain 10man/25man trash, tanking adds on lootship, etc) I swap over to this set as i'm still crit immune and do a lot more dps.

Why so much? My understanding is that after 540 Defense, adding Defense isn't a bad thing, just not an optimal thing. Am I missing something?

Yes. You appear to be building more of a threat set than a MT set. (There's nothing wrong with that, but as you are asking us "Can I Raid?" - I assume you are building a mitigation set...) Generally speaking, you can replace most gems and sockets with Epic Stamina Gems and be good. Be sure to hit your Meta Requirements though...

A lot of people are doing this now. I have been messing around with multiple "Crit-able" specs. I am still using a Sword/Board, but I've been dropping gear for heroics. I've completed several heroics with <520 Def. The key is to lower your defense slowly (aka - Switch into DPS Gear one piece at a time as you feel more comfortable with the group) and check out the healer. At 40,000+ HP, eating a crit every once in a while really isn't dangerous. Combine that with Argent Defender... you're usually safe. I don't actually tell the healer (They'd freak out and might leave) - I just check him out. If he's rolling in 5400GS Gear... I'm fine. If the guy is covered in Blues and barely breaking 3000... Well I need to run in my raid set up. This doesn't work in Raids and I would avoid trying it in ICC 5-mans or even ToC... But for heroics that are 2 years old... It's not a problem.

I think of it as taking a DPS to a Vanilla or TBC instance. Could you die - yes. Is it likely - No.

Its just whats on the gear, kind of hard to avoid when you have multiple pieces with over +90 def on them.
