So I did it, I went and got DS and made my 2nd spec Smite DPS with SoL as opposed to Penance. Was having issues with tracking SoL procs on my 1 trial run so I set up powerauras after to let me know when they are up. Was around 2k DPS in H AN.

Holy Fire and Smite spam, the rotation is great. I opted to not put points in Aspiration so that the 2 minute CD lines up with trinkets for ease of lining them up. Still need more gear for the spec as I mainly using Disco spec gear with some odds n ends thrown in that I have acquired. New gear will help a bunch I think as I am mostly SP and SP/Int gems and healer chants so being able to use DPS versions will be nice. Will likely gem towards SP/Spirit as I am now Spirit based regen and have Spirit to SP talents. Maybe just SP except for sexy sockets, like hit i need more hit, they can get combo gems.

The 3rd major glyph is giving me issues as after Smite and Nova there isn't much to support the spec. I have a metric crap ton of haste, HF is at 1.25 cast time. Will likely try and get my crit up but am unsure as to how much haste I can lose or even if I should push for a 1 second Smite.

Anyway I logged in the gear/spec so feel free to comment.

Out of curiosity, how does that compare to Shadow DpS with the same gear?

I tried looking at it in Rawr, but it isn't set up to handle it. And, while it DOES show you the expected DpS of the non-shadow spells, I don't know if the build is just spamming them or not.

With self-buffs only, and no food/pots, it says a DP>SW:P>HF>Smite priority system would result in 1997 DpS.

Pretty paltry.

I did 1700 DPS today on Saurfang in my healing holy spec, slowly getting near the lowest tank who was doing 2K. The only thing a proper smite-DPSer would have over me would be hit (cap), 10% (ocassionaly 30%) extra damage on their smites and a 0,5 second less cast time on it (which is effectively one free smite for every four Smites they throw). My gear is fairly top notch, up to the point where a shadow priest would probably do above 5K with it at the least (depending on the fight, though 6 or 7K isn't unthinkable). I can't see a smite priest getting higher than 3K if they really go for it.

I see, so it remains a just-for-kicks spec...

I guess it would be too hard to balance for PvP if it could do high DpS too.

Yes, the spec is for fun. Just goofy in heroics and if I don't need to heal for a fight. Its pretty fun.

The numbers on trash with Nova spam and SoL procs can be gaudy, mana intense but fun.

Here are some screenies. One Two

Have to start using PI more often instead of saving it for bosses as I think it will help with mana and DPS. Same idea with IF. Might just macro IF as a shift conditional into Smite/HF/HV to make it easier to use.

Amazing mana hasn't been issue outside of Nova spam. I think IF/PI will help so I'll resume testing.

edit: fix links

I love how you're topping the meters in the first one and the party leader is so bewildered he's going "what happened?" =P

It still does higher DPS than any other healer, though, which makes it kickass for PVP. Most other healers are offensively useless outside of CC. As a Disc/Smite priest with the Smite glyph you can actually kill people all by yourself.

Edit: "most other healers" is an exaggeration, but "many other healers" just sounded wishy-washy

In the right spec my druid could push at least 2.5k on boss fights while healing.

But smite spec just sounds more fun :D

How's that work? I'm learning Druid healing but mine is only level 43 and doesn't have Tree form yet. I thought you couldn't cast any offensive spells in Tree? Do you just shift a lot?

I suppose once you get sufficient SP, then the bonus to healing tree form offers isn't really necessary, and you'd just stay in your humanoid form.

I changed up the build after some runs. Using this now. Need to swap into the PW:S glyph still. Takes nothing away from the DPS aspects but adds more healing ability I think.

Still need to get gear for the spec as I am mostly using disc gear which is not quite right for the spec. Especially the gems, mostly sp/int instead of sp/spirit. I have been using GH to heal also which is weird for me as I am not used to it at all. But it is so fast and cheap how can I not. SoL procs are a mix of DPS and healing still.

Also I am still getting used to using IF, PI and Fiend more than I am used to as disco, since I rarely used them as disc as they were more for ****** situations or in the case of PI thrown on DPS. So either way this will help me use my CDs more when raid healing which I like. Also I ahve noticed the spec is way more active than when I would DPS as regular Disc as that was mostly Mind Sear trash and Penance, HF, Smite on bosses. Now I HN spam trash and judge where SoL prcos go while paying attention to health to shield, GH, PoH and making sure PoM is up. The ranged DPS I have to watch more than melee or tanks since they miss out on the Nova love.

I want to try and get rid of the Mp5 gear and get either spirit, crit or haste instead. Will have to farm the new heroics or ToC to get the gear though but shouldn't be bad. I really want to try and get decent gear for it before I pass a serious judgment but I like it so far. When not needed to heal it is an interesting way to DPS, adding healing in at the same time really makes mana management a focus. I'm hoping spec based gear will help the mana issue.

Anyway as always, if you have a question, pointer or other bit of advice let me know.

You just have the best cookies, so everyone else comes in to get some.

Though I guess that does make you pretty smart.

The Black Magic chant procs of Holy Nova when it deals damage.

I found that to be pretty sweet.

Crosspost from the accomplishment thread, but yeah... 3539.3 dps as PvP spec with PvE dps gear (hitcap mainly) on Volkhan in heroic Lightning Halls.
It helped that the only healing I had to do was shield + PoM on the tank before the fight.

What PvP spec you using? Standard Disc PvP with Smite glyph or something else?

Been thinking of trying a Penance DPS spec but want to gear up this one first, especially since the gear would be very similar.

I'd tweak it if I used it for my Penance base DPS spec.

More like this.

edit: Just in case you weren't sure this is a heroic spec where I am the healer but mostly DPS and only heal when needed.

Mine looks like this.

There are plenty of little places where you can shift points around according to preference, but overall I'm really really happy with the Smite spec and glyph versus a deeper Disc build. I can't stand healing classes/specs where you have no hope of fighting on your own or doing any more than holding the bad guys off until the reinforcements arrive. I prefer healing but that doesn't mean I want to be SOL if I happen to get caught 1v1.

The main reason I don't take Aspiration in a Smite DPS build is because it will desync trinkets and wahtnot from the CD on PI. I like them to line up for a macrotastic DPS explosion.

Also teacake, do you drink tea or coffee in the am? The guildies tell me you all did that Day Light Savings nonsense, so I'm guessing it is pushing 5:30am at la casa de teacake.

I just found about the DST switch tonight. I would have missed the raid time by an hour if no one told me.
