HELP holy spec lvl guideFollow

#1 Feb 04 2010 at 3:39 PM Rating: Decent
hello, my girlfriend, 2 room mate's and i are going to get back on WoW. the only thing missing in our group is heals so i decided i would step-up and start a holy-spec priest for our little group seeing as my 2 roomies want to be warrior and hunter and my gf is going mage. I've never roll'd a priest before and dont realy know what kind of spec to go for so i did some investigating into the mater of priest spec's. What i haven't been able to find is a leveling guide for where to put what talent points and when so i decided to write one up with my limited exp on the subject and see if you all could help me fine-tune it, so here it goes...

LVL ___ Progress ___ Talent
10-14___ 5/5___ Holy Specialization
15-19___ 5/5 ___ Divine Fury
20-22 ___ 3/3 ___ Inspiration
23-25 ___ 3/3 ___ Improved Renew
26-28___ 3/3___ Improved Healing
29 _____ 1/2 _____ Searing Light
30-34 ___ 5/5 ___ Spiritual Guidance
35-39___ 5/5___ Spiritual Healing
40-41 ___ 2/2 ___ Healing Prayers
42 _____ 1/1 ____ Spirit of Redemption
43-44 ___ 2/3 ___ Holy Concentration
45-49___ 5/5___ Empowered Healing
50 _____ 1/1 ____ Circle of Healing
51-53 ___ 3/3 ___ Serendipity
54 _____ 1/3 _____ Empowered Renew
55-59___ 5/5___ Divine Providence
60 _____ 1/1 ____ Guardian Spirit
61-65 ___ 5/5 ___ Twin Disciplines
66-67 ___ 2/2 ___ Improved Power Word Fortitude
68-70___ 3/3 ___ Improved Inner Fire
71 _____ 1/1 ____ Inner Focus
72-74 ___ 3/3 ___ Meditation
75-76 ___ 3/3 ___ Empowered Renew
77-79 ___ 3/3 ___ Test of Faith
80 _____ 1/2_____ Surge of Light

Here is the link to what it looks like in the talent calculator. i'm not so much worried about how fast it could lvl solo, i'm more concerned with being able to get max heals while i run with my friends, this will be my off-hand toon that i'll be playing with them maybe 3-4 nights a week. Comments and sugestions are needed, thanks for the help.

I stopped right here. I know you said you don't care much about soloing, but unless you are NEVER going to quest, 3/3 Spirit Tap for leveling as the first 3 points, always. IMO, of course.

Are you positive you want to be Holy? Disc is also a great healing spec and can be fun for doing battlegrounds for xp as well if you all plan on doing any of that together. Both are a lot of fun so it's really a matter of preference.

Either way, once you get Spirit Tap I would go to Searing Light in the Holy tree first, then to Meditation in Disc. Then straight up whichever tree you want, although if you are choosing Disc, you'll want to respec for Penance as soon as you can get it.

If you don't care about offensive abilities at all, then skip what I just said, first three points in Spirit Tap, then straight up either healing tree in any order you think will be useful at the time.

Also, again unless you feel you will never be getting hit, I'd go 2/2 Healing Focus rather than filling out Holy Spec at first. Crit is not a noticeable game changer at early levels but interrupts are.

i just wasn't too sure about spirit tap because one of my roomies told me that i would have to get the killing blow for it to proc, so i just bypassed it to pick up the early crits from the holy spec talent. another question i have is about the holy reach tallent, i know it will help my aoe heals, but will taking points from other talents justify the extra %20 range of my AoE's? as to the disc vs holy choice, i just like the thought of healing dmg rather than mitigating it before it happens or shielding tanks in 5 mans, it'll probly be 6+ months before this toon is anywhere close to doing anything truly chalenging, as i said before, this will just be my time-kill toon as i introduce WoW to my gf and one of my roomies. Would it be a good choice to swap a point from holy concentration to max Surge of light so it procs more often, i've heard that surge will most likely proc at least once from circle healing and almost gaurantead again from prayer of mending or prayer of healing

Yes, you do need to get the killing blow. But riddle me this; if you're questing and killing mobs alone, who else but you is going to get the killing blow?

In a full holy raid spec, yup. Best other stuff you can get for those points are 1 or 2% increased heals, which isn't very beneficial if half your heals don't land in the first place.

Aside from being unable to read your posts, I'm not quite sure what you're geting at. You want a leveling spec but you ask questions that apply to raiding?

Your friend is right regarding Spirit Tap and the killing blow. The talent is not so good if you are performing a purely healing role. As far as the other talents, I would bet that at some point you are going to want to do some damage while healing. The extra range for Smite and Holy Fire puts you closer to the healing range (40 yds). The extension to Holy Nova will be noticeable as well.

With the SoL procs, your source was probably referring more to end game gear and builds. If you start gearing for crit early, you may be sacrificing your regen. Nothing is worse than a priest without mana. With the lower crit that the levelling gear has, your SoL procs will be fewer, so you may want to rethink that until you get geared enough to warrant the talent. (One point will give you procs from time to time to get you used to them, but realistically, they won't be as abundant as you might want.)

Just so I make my point clear, Nothing is worse than a priest without mana.
On the flip side, with plentiful mana, you will be able to support your group for extended periods and through larger pulls, which is always fun. =)

Have fun!

Yes, you need the killing blow to proc ST. I still recommend taking it (again, just my opinion, I'm not like, giving you a direct order Smiley: lol). The last priest I leveled was duoing with my husband's warrior from 1-80, never soloed a single time. I leveled with a healing build and tried it both with and without Spirit Tap. I still found I needed it and even getting the killing blow maybe 25-30% of the time still made a huge difference in leveling speed because I never needed to drink. I wouldn't recommend it if you are leveling 100% COMPLETELY through instances, but otherwise, I would take it.

The extra range from Holy Reach is nice if you're solo leveling and want to hit mobs from farther away before they can hit you, and for endgame. I wouldn't sacrifice it for other things when neither circumstance applies.

WRT Holy Specialization, yes, it is a fabulous, I'd even say necessary, talent for Holy at higher levels. Crit is a great regen stat because of Surge of Light, and instant Flash Heals can be game changing. But I wouldn't bother with it until you really start to build some crit on your gear. Your crit is so insignificant at low levels that the difference between 4% and 9% is really not going to be something you feel. Interrupts, on the other hand, are bad while leveling, again unless you are ONLY going to level through instances, without a single quest or battleground in between. Which, I can't imagine running BFD that much, but to each his own. Smiley: wink

I personally found Spirit Tap very useful even in instances at lower levels. I could easily heal in Smite Spec and deal enough damage to proc Spirit Tap often enough to not run OOM. Many instances have stuff that can be one-hit (or wand killed, like totems) and still procs Spirit Tap and while you have to change your playstyle a bit to achieve that, it makes for great mana efficiency before you can get Rapture. Actually, I run OOM more as Disc than I ever did with that Smite leveling spec. Mind you, it's still pretty much never.

Take Spirit Tap, I have it in my disc spec which I level mainly through instance. Ive reached level 74 with about 600 quests done. Spirit Tap is useful for wand killing Totems and things, and when you learn Shadow Word: Death you can use it to snipe killing blows off of the DPS.
