Hey all,
As the title suggests I am interested in switching to Balance to level, but don't want to do it too early as I want to try and get to 80 pretty fast. I plan on having a dual spec Resto/Balance for Healing and DPS.
My Druid is only level 54 right now running around in Heirlooms and Blues and I just want to have your opinion on when switching to Balance will be easy to level with without too much downtime. The sticky says Outland gearing helps but it isn't as fast as Feral and Northrend they are equal, is this accurate?
I just want to make sure I understand the Balance DPS rotations and strategies before I hit 80 so I know how to play the spec correctly onec I start gearing for and running Heroics all the time and potentially raiding as either Heals, DPS or both.

Yeah, the sticky is pretty much accurate. You can easily level as a Moonkin. It`s easier if you start doing that on Outland. Still, its faster to just level as feral. I`m saying that cause I was a feral until wotlk came and leveled as Moonkin on Northrend. Its pretty much doable, but dont expect to solo too much group quests, since most of those mobs cant be stunned. Its faster to just level as feral and, at 85ish starting to grab moonkin/resto items.

Alright I guess I'll just level up through Northrend as Feral gathering Moonkin drops until I get to Icecrown, then switch to Moonkin and figure it out from there. Thanks for the response.

If you really want to level as a caster the difference isn't that terrible. I leveled as a dreamstate/resto hybrid up until 73, when I went full resto and got to 80 via instances. Just did group pulls; HoTs on me, DoTs on them.
The sticky is right, it isn't as fast as feral. But it's not like it's going to take 2x as long or anything. With a good amount of mana regen the downtime is minimal.

In my experience, the real problem lies within the amount of mobs from a quest hub you can pull at the same time and clear that hub and the amount of group quests you can do by yourself. But that`s just me.
Of course, assuming you are questing to level. If you are doing bgs/instances to lvl its probably better/faster to go healer or tank.

If you already have an 80 on the server with enough seals or emblems, 2x Discerning Eye of the Beasts is a GODSEND for leveling mana-users. Wrath is 11% of base mana. 2x Beasts is 4% of MAX mana. As a level 34 mage, my Frostbolt is 76 mana. 2 trinkets gives me 47-48 mana x2. That means I not only get 1 free cast per fight, but another free one every 5 fights. Gives me great efficiency while leveling, and when spamming FB in groups.
And, the more int you get, the better the efficiency. And the more SP you get (I have 24 from the trinkets now), the fewer casts you need to make. With 144 SP at level 34, I only have to cast 3-6 times depending on the level of my opponent and the number of crits. So I can walk away with 2-5 casts worth of mana instead. Helps keep me going longer, and hitting harder.
Granted, you'll still probably level faster as a cat. But once you get to a certain speed, the increase may feel like splitting hairs.
Either way, level the way you want to.
1 week of leveling something you don't enjoy that much is going to feel a lot longer than leveling 2 weeks as something you really like. And, as someone said, Boomkin won't be twice as long anyway.

Switched to Boomkin at 55, played my new spec for a few minutes in Eastern Plaguelands before getting into a BRD run. I loved being able to kill stuff in EPL pretty fast but the mana drain downtime sucks, but I love blowing stuff up.
The instance run was amazing, my DPS was incredible and I was having a blast...should have switched sooner, but I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much without the extra talents you get after you get Moonkin.
Anyway, leveling almost exclusively in instances as DPS Boomkin or Healing Tree and I love both so it's win win. Can't wait to start running through all the Outland and Northrend instances as a Boomkin or Tree...except Occulus.
