NibelungFollow

#1 Dec 30 2009 at 10:07 AM Rating: Decent
This is mostly a hindsight post, but here goes. Last night Nibelung dropped from Lady Deathwhisper. My guild runs EPGP loot system, and since I knew that I am going to miss several upcoming 25s, I decided to grab the staff to replace this and this.

The proc rate on the Valkyr seems to be ok - started off real low and then hit a few times later in the night.

My question is: what has anyone heard/seen about the staff, and is it better for me to go back to main/offhand? If I have to eat the EPGP so be it.

The weapon is decent, but it isn't better than my combination of the Ony sword + Surplus limb from naxx, some I'm guessing it is worse than the combo that you have.

I was hoping the additional damage from the Valk and running Black Magic would make up for some of the stat losses. I take a hit on just about everything except spell power.

Just to make it easy for people:

Nibbel Bonus
107 Int
Red Socket
Blue Socket
SB= +7 SP
+741 SP
--Chance to summon a Val'kyr.
Proc info (from WoWHead):
1% chance to summon, but no ICD.
Benefits from some buffs/debuffs, but not all.
2.5% chance to crit against bosses. 17% chance to miss.
Does not scale with your stats.
Casts about 16-17 spells per summon.
1061-1189 damage per spell, with a 1.5 crit modifier.

[EDIT] You CAN summon MULTIPLE ones at ones, due to lack of CD. AND will proc off each "tic" of DoT-like spells like Living Bomb and Blizzard. It will not proc from Ignite or Fire DoTs FROM a single-target spell (FB, FFB and FS). It has a chance to proc for each hit on each target. So it is far more likely to proc if you Blizz 40 mobs than blizz 1. I don't know if Arcane Missles can proc on each "tic" but I assume it will.

Blade/Chalice
104 Int
Red Socket
SB=+4 Crit
Yellow Socket
SB=+5 SP
701 SP
43 Hit
37 Crit
109 Haste

According to Enthorn on EJ:

Nibelung is a 1% proc chance. On a fully debuffed mob, it averages about 1200 damage, with a a 3-6% crit rate. Range seems to be about 950 - 1950 according to a few parses from wowmeter. Wowhead comments indicate it benefits from things like CoE, Scorch debuff, etc. -- it benefits from debuffs, not buffs, basically (much like mirror images).

I took it into SM Cathedral and grouped up a fair number of mobs and spammed Blizzard. I managed to proc 10 Val'Kyrs -- I don't know if they all procced at the same time, doubtful, since each tick can proc it, but there were 10 up at one time. I'm not sure if this is a max or not.

It procs off of damage spell casts, it seems, and it seems to proc whether it does damage or not. It can proc off Molten Armor, but it also seems to proc off of Chill (Ice Armor, Ice Barrier with Shattered Barrier). It even procced off the jet pack on Gunship battle. The tooltip says harmful spells, but I think it has a pretty wide range.

It doesn't seem to proc off the DoT portion of Living Bomb though. I'll have to do more testing though. A few wowhead comments say it averages about 16 casts during its duration. That would give about 19,200 damage at 1200 average. In my own parses, it was averaging about 17,300 damage per proc. I had one proc that had 16 casts and did 17,232 damage. I had another fight where I had two procs. There were a total of 33 casts and 34,748 damage. And lastly, I had a fight with, apparently, 6 procs. There were 100 casts (and 21 misses!), and 96,165 damage, working out to 16,027 average damage between them. On that fight, it was 4.7% of my total damage.

If I was going to add it into Rawr, I would simply give the weapon a 1% chance on damaging spell casts to do 17,000 damage.

It seems that increasing the proc chance to 2% is all that is needed to bring it in line with other weapons. Although, at 2%, [Frost Needle] + [Lightbane Focus] is still a better combination, but only by ~10 DPS -- and the damage value of 15,000 is pretty open too. There are many additional factors, such as it being Holy damage, and being able to crit, and being able to miss, and benefitting from debuffs on the target. Basically though, [Nibelung] needs to proc around 5 times during a 5 minute fight for the proc to make up for its loss of crit/haste/hit. This is entirely plausible, but at the same time, I've gone many fights in a row without seeing a single proc. I will definitely try it out though on Onyxia and Anub'arak. It doesn't seem to be worth it on single target fights, even though it's very fun.

Thanks for the heads up on the EJ post.

I haven't had the chance to give it much AOE testing just yet, though I am encouraged by the SM results. I'll have to see if I can get an ulduar/naxx fun run together and see how it performs. I'd really hate to put the thing back in my bag and not use it.

Part of me wants to say that, even if it is potentially less DpS, the sheer fun factor should have you keeping it out. O.o;;

I can just imagine the lulz of having 10 Val'kyr launching spells around, when you are already walking death. XD

[EDIT]

Even if you use the 1/off combo for boss fights, I'd still hold onto it for AoE fights/trash. :D

Quick follow up. I just came across this blue post. I'm strictly guessing, but it seems from the text of the post that blizzard isnt really concerned about proc rates and stats, and is focused more on the attributes of the valkyr once procc'd. Frankly, I'm not sure what that means.

I think it is more about being able to plan/math out what dps the valkyr will give you. It is a problem when the things have a 16/17% miss rate which could kill the potential dps that they are there for instead of having a crit/haste/etc buff on the weapon.

What I don't get is why they say it would take a while to implement it. I mean, shouldn't it only take a second of coding? Like, you just remove miss from the attack table for it...

Agreed. Seems like a simple fix to me.

Should be much better now. 17% more hits, higher damage.

Rock on!

The proc rate seems to be a little better, at least as of last night. Not spectactular, but at least once per boss in ICC. According to recount, the valk was doing 2% of my damage, which I guess is on par with where blizz wants it to be?

From MMO-Champion

Nibelung hotfix (Nibelung)
We are currently in the process of applying two hotfix improvements to the Nibelung staff. The first change is that we are improving the chance for a val’kyr to proc from 1% to 2%. While this may not seem like a significant improvement, it will be notable and result in the val'kyr appearing more often.

The second change is that anytime a summoned val’kyr casts her smite spell, she will heal herself for 25% of the damage done. This will help keep them alive when AoE damage is happening but not make them invincible as we still want them to feel like a summoned creature and not a special form of a DoT spell that has awesome art.

We understand the frustrations players have had with this weapon so far. We currently plan to make more proc weapons in the future and are committed to making this and other proc weapons fun and competitive items.

Flippin finally.

Looks like it may become a competitive weapon now, I will def be rolling on it over my abracadaver staff.
