They're right, Frost will (likely) never be the TOP spec. However, I make a lot of mages nervous now.
I can soundly, and proudly say that since 3.3, I haven't been out DPSed by any other mage I've come across. Granted, I've only grouped with 6 or so other mages including VoA, but I'm more comfortable in frost than I've ever been.
I saw you mention an 'extra glyph slot' opening up. Does this mean you've been levelling? I personally don't even run recount while levelling.
If you follow my guide with the addendum notes regarding 3.3, you should put out decent numbers. It's not like frost is difficult to play, even if it's still very luck based.
I have some stuff to note for you, though, maybe it will help.
Though FoF ghosting DOES still exist (ignore what the patch notes say, they also say the Permafrost change is still in), I wouldn't suggest that a person new to gaming do it anymore. The 'window' to get a FoF charge in is TINY now, within I'd say 100ms.
Also, remember: COOLDOWNS. Your DPS will be trash if you aren't popping every cooldown at the same time.
Molten Armor: I didn't discuss this in my FAQ, it was originally designed to touch on simply the FROST ONLY portions of frost raiding, as in, the stuff different than other mages. However, I've seen a LOT of frosties trying to use Ice Armor for whatever reason. Don't, just use Molten armor.
Throw a frostbolt or two. This ensures that you're casting frostbolt :D
How much haste is a 'lot' of haste. Frost DPS is pretty damn bad until you hit a 2 second frostbolt. At this point, Gnomes wander into your account, grab your recount bar, and stretch it out magically. I can't tell you WHY this number is so magical to frost mages, but at 2.1 seconds (swapping some gems around I was able to manage this), I do around 3800 DPS on a boss. at 2.0 seconds, it leaps to 4200ish. In my best gear, which puts me at a 1.8 second frostbolt, I do 5-6K on bosses depending on Deep Freeze procs. I'm starting to consider that Haste might be just as important as SP for frosties, possibly more. Research pending.
