You have to be within 6 yards of your target for it work, and when you're raiding you should obviously never be that close to the boss. I don't even have Arcane Torrent on my bars anymore, I haven't for a long time. Hell, I didn't even use it that much when I leveled.
As for me, I really like Blood Elves and Undead for mages. They both look awesome, and I'm a hordie through and through.
I use it a lot to silence mages that would otherwise stay out of range of the tank. It sends em in and better clusters them up for the mow down.
