So, since the Mage forum is so inundated with real, useful posts seeking info, I thought it was about time to create a nonsensical one that helps no one. : )

Simply put, which is your favorite Mage race (you may include Cata races, including old ones with the new class, if you so desire), and who is your favorite Mage?

I thought it would also be fun to have two categories for your favorite. One for gameplay (racials, basically), and one for look/lore.

I'll start:

My favorite Mage race for looks/lore are High/Blood Elves. I just like the idea of a magical kingdom that spread magic through the world. Plus, founding Dalaran gets them more kudos.

I also like the way they look (in general, they and Draenei are my favorite looking races, plus Worgen in Cata). They have very clean features, which I like. Their animations make it look like casting spells is exceedingly simple. And they aren't super buff, like Humans are (seriously, I'm sure I could use magic to keep me healthy and such, but I doubt my mage is working out 5 times a week). The only thing I don't like is how their stance makes shoulder armor crooked. It's fine with small ones, but large ones just make me want to scream "Stand up straight." And I guess I should note I don't like how often their cloaks clip with weapons. Draenei are a close second, for me, since magic has been a part of their heritage for over 25,000 years, at least.

As for racials, it's a very close toss-up with Draenei (+1% hit for a whole party is pretty awesome, and I like getting added utility with the HoT), Humans (Spirit, extra trinket in PvP, extra rep) and BEs (Silence and extra mana every 2 minutes--with 20K mana it is equal to 50 mp5).

My favorite Mage would have to be either Kael'thas (before he went wacko) or Rhonin. I liked Kael a lot in WCIII so, even though his story isn't that detailed or deep pre-Illidan, I have a residual appreciation for him. I liked Rhonin a lot in the books, though he doesn't do much in WoW. Like, talk when you click on him...

How about everyone else?

Honestly, the Arcane Torrent racial is useless once you stop leveling (might be useful in PvP though). You have to be within 6 yards of your target for it work, and when you're raiding you should obviously never be that close to the boss. I don't even have Arcane Torrent on my bars anymore, I haven't for a long time. Hell, I didn't even use it that much when I leveled.

As for me, I really like Blood Elves and Undead for mages. They both look awesome, and I'm a hordie through and through.

I personally think that gender affects mages, male human or bloodelf just don't look like mages to me, humans need descent beards, male gnomes look great and either gender undead.

For Cata Night elf mages will be good, shadowmeld useful for surprise attacks and will make a good oh no button.

Edit: Because I must have offended someone with my choice of words.
Apologies to whoever I may have offended.

I don't really like any of the beard models in the game, for any race (including Dwarves, which is partly why I never play them). Even if I like them from the front, I HATE them from the back (specifically the full Gnome one).

Okay I retract my earlier statement about Arcane Torrent. I used it tonight during our first ToGC 10 raid when I was completely OOM with Evocation and my mana gem on CD, and discovered that you don't have to be in range of a mana user to get the mana back. I thought you did lol. So yeah, it's on my action bars now. =x

Not sure how it's gonna work with next Expansion Catalysm, since spellpower will dissapear and ur power of ur spells will be translated back to the amount of intelligence if I am not mistaking.

In that case, gnome mage ftw wich provides 5% more int. cuz of racial benefits wich (I hope) will give gnomes an advantage on spellpowerrrrrr when Catalysm comes out.

Plus that I love the looks of my male-gnome, he's got a big smile, goofy teeth and he /********* as a Pro-Snoop-Dog-Look-Al-Like when he dances ^^

Spellpower isn't disappearing, it's being taken off of gear. All of the racials are being changed, so I hope those disgusting little creatures don't end up the 'best' mages.

I love Night Elves. I love the lore, I love the models (badass casting animations), I love the giant freakin' tree they live on.
My mage will be getting a race change as soon as I can, to nelf.

Poldaran is human. I have written her backstory as a human. That's really all that matters to me.

Though I'd probably have had a hard time deciding between human and BE had I originally had the choice.

I love my undead mage, although I wish that the armor was better and so were the racials. The casting animation I think looks the best of all of the races, imo. I'm just sick of seeing bones stick through everywhere.

I could never make an Undead. I never got why they needed to cut holes in their gear so their bones could pop out. Doesn't really make sense for a tank...

Plus, the bottoms of their sleeves are just randomly floating there.

Yeah, the bones sticking out is kind of cool at first, but it does start to get annoying once you get good looking gear.

I would have to say a gnome mage. Two main reason one their really small and pack a big punch, and two green hair and full green bread. A mage is only as smart as his bread IMO.

A wheat-y assertion. I'm sure you'll just make a rye face when you think about it.

Trolls

Haste buff is nice.
#17 Feb 22 2010 at 12:10 PM Rating: Decent
I love my Troll, I like how his casting animation looks and the haste racial iss really nice as a part of my Arcane rotation. I dont really run out of mana on fights so I havent found a need for a class with an INT buff or Mana regen taaalent. But then again I could be mistaken but since my Mage is staying a Troll I geuss Ill never know. My Fav Mage in Lore I would say maybe is Arugal just cause itd be cool having my own Castle full of crazy Worgen to do my bidding.

I'm currently loving Arcane Torrent on my Mage. A free 1200 mana every 2 minutes may not be huge, but it's coming in VERY handy for speed runs and on bosses if the DpS other than me are crap (so the boss takes forever to kill, so I run out of mana).

Well, I was belf for the longest time, and I loved her twirly jump and arcane torrent (though it took me longer than most to realize that torrent actually gave me manas!), but then the race changes came out, and I switched to troll. I switched to male because I love their dance. I mostly switched, though, because fire isn't very bursty and I wanted a little bit of burstiness, so berkserking was appealing to me. Fastforward not too far ahead and I found myself spec'ing arcane. Didn't have too much of a problem with mana, so I kept my troll. Meanwhile, I noticed that when I told my spouse that I'd gotten new gear, he was pretty "meh" about it. Cuz, yeah, trolls aren't very pretty. Fastforward a little more and I found myself needing or wanting that tiny bit of mana and not needing that little bit of burst, so I switched back to belf female. Now, when I get new gear, my spouse wants to see it right away! lol! I do miss bersersking, though, but I think I'll keep the belf. I like how tiny she is and dainty, and well, boots look cool now too. :)

Favorite mage is not in lore, but it's Kyth. She's done so much for the mage and raiding community, plus she's just a pleasant person. <3 Anobix too!

I love the look of my undead mage. I have thought about switching for the beserking but can't seem to give up that free trinket spot for pvp emergencies. Besides I really dont like the look of the troll. World pvp wouldn't be the same without being able to cannabalize someone who just tried to gank me!

I love my Gnome Mage.

Keep in mind, my mage isn't endgame ready yet. I'm only 71.

I can blow stuff up, rip $#!+ up with Ice, or smack enemies silly with arcane. Then...

After I **** off the mob...

I get smacked by a boss and die.

It's hilarious to me.

Gnoam maeg!
Played as one for... 3 or 4 years, IDK.

Probably changing to Goblin in Cata if I start again.
#25 Aug 15 2010 at 2:18 AM Rating: Decent
Definitely have to pick a Gnome Mage. What's worse than getting the crap beaten out of you by a bouncing little female gnome with pink pigtails?

I also love how low to the ground they get when they cast and some of the other animations they come with. If I could choose ANY class for a mage though (during Wrath) I would probably go with tauren. I love the shoulder size for them :D

As far as looks: Blood Elf Male.

Why?

In June of 2007, when I was just a noob, a 48 mage gave me a run though of Ragefire on my Warrior. After watching him go insane with Blastwave and Flamestrike, I decided that that was what I wanted to do.

The only problem being I didn't have Burning Crusade.

And so I rolled a female Troll.

Playing Preference: Troll

It's quite simple. Berserking. I love being able to just unleash with this. I created a spec during BC which, while very heavy in Arcane, focused on Frost damage. Arcane Power + Trinket + Icy Veins + Berserking = GATLING MAGE! It was pretty insane to watch. It was even crazier in ZA when you could spellsteal that buff that increased your haste.

Favorite Mage from Lore:

Milhouse Manastorm

Why? Funny catchphrases, and probably the greatest quote a mob could have when they die.
