Question for the senior Boomkins in here. Is putting Thorns on the tanks and melee classes a waste of mana/buff? IMO i think the +73 damage everytime they get hit seems better than nothing to me. If it is a good thing, does anyone know of a addon thats like PallyPower but can cast Thorns on all melee classes with one click? Maybe a macro? Thanks in advance.

Yes, well for tanks not melee so much.

Plus if I cast it as feral it does 73 damage, as a boomkin/tree you have SP to make it do more. Brambles also up the damage.

As a tank, I LOVE when I party with boomkins that have Brambles. I know it isn't a great talent, and probably isn't taken much for raids, but its so much fun on trash (especially those small guys in HoS) while your avoidance is still low enough you get hit a decent amount.

In Culling of Stratholme, Thorns + Ret Aura = win. Those zombies hit me once and take loads of damage.

If you're spec'd into brambles with your last two points then yeah I guess.

Thing is though, you want the druid with the highest spell power to be buffing thorns on your tanks since its damage is based off spell power.

Usually this is a resto druid.

Back before the thorns/ret aura nerf I used to proc one of my sp trinkets and pop the other to buff my ret pally in 2's. Between thorns/ret aura/eye for an eye the damage return on rogues was normally like 11k on their openers on the pally. It was fun.

Thorns does twice the threat as it does in damage. This was changed the same time they nerfed the damage on it.

Currently, with what I dub "Thorns Gear", I can reach just over 3300 (I think 3343 exact; but can't confirm in game just this minute) Spell Power (Bonus Damage; Not Bonus Healing which is actually higher than that in my cat spec) and Thorns is worth a starting 183dmg per hit, which I think is about 35 damage below where I was before the nerf. I've never specced resto or boomkin, ever.

Too many restos and boomkins are entirely too lazy about thorns such that I feel compelled to swap gears and do it my own self.

Tell a shammy to throw down a Spell Power totem for further boost. It's not like it kills their buff/prepare time before an encounter.

Does the threat go to the tank or the Druid (I've always wondered, but never looked it up). Because, if it goes to the tank, that's a good threat tool as well.

I've noticed a LOT of players have been lax on buffs lately (particularly Ret Pallies. GIVE ME MY KINGS, DAMMIT. I mean, just watch for when your own wears and buff the group accordingly).

Kinda annoying when I suddenly have 2K less max health as the tank. It would be even worse if I was Blood spec, because then I'd lose even more and my Death Strikes would return less health.

The damage goes to the person who has it on them.

IE: A druid casts thorns on a tank. The tank gets hit, the mob takes thorns damage, the tank gets the aggro.

Which is why it's bad to put on anyone other than the tank unless you're pvp'ing. Because more aggro = harder time for tank to get mobs back off people.

Thanks for all the answers. Didn't occur to me the aggro aspect of it. Tanks only from now on.

Woot, your bonus healing is higher than 3300 in Cat spec? With your spell power gear or with your feral gear? Because Nurturing Instincts give 70% of your agility as bonus healing so if you have 3300+ then you'd have 4700+ agility. Smiley: eek

Edit: Also, what are you doing with 3k spell power without a Boomkin/Resto spec? Gief gear now!

With SP Gear (2490), Idol Up (234), and an on-use Trinket(599) = 3323 SP (a little bit less than I thought in my previous post written while servers were down).

The Healing portion always sits about 65+ higher than the Damage portion because while in SP gear I still have a 93 Base Agility or more with mark of wild and/or other buffs and this is the sole reason for my specific care to mention damage vs healing SP because the healing side is always higher, but it's only the damage side that matters for thorns. Casting Thorns in a purely DPS set with the exemplified 4700agility would be like the same as casting thorns 100% unclothed as nurturing doesn't affect thorns and instead only healing capability.

I'm the guild's DE'er. Some things get saved at the cost of an abyss crystal out of pocket.

There is not a single buff that is a waste of mana.

Because you get so much out of Water Walking in ToC? Especially when there's a DK in the group, who could do a party-wide one for 1 rune (lolWasteOfRune).

Actually, I think you'll find that he meant that seeing you apply the buff before combat and can drink before the fight starts, the mana cost is irrlevant.
