Guildie hunter's pet not holding agro... at all.Follow

(And yes... I have read the FAQ just to make sure I wasn't overlooking something.)

OK, let me first start off by saying I have a L.80 BM hunter and I have no problem with my pet holding agro.

My guildie's hunter on the other hand....

He is MM. He has a wolf as a pet. He has growl on, and cower off.

He is L.71, and his wolf is 70.

I have sat and watched him fight to see if I could see what the problem is, but the way his pet holds agro it looks like he has cower on, but he tells me he doesn't. I have even walked him through his pet's talent book and asked which skills had the swirling around them and which ones had stationary corners to make sure cower was off.

I had him do a fight solo with him opening with hunter's mark, send pet in, wait a few seconds and open with Serpent Sting and then Arcane shot... after arcane I just had him auto-shoot/attack. He arcaned shot approx. 5-7sec into fight and as soon as it hit the mob turned and ran for him. When the mob was at about 20% health his pet regained agro.

His arcane shot did not crit, and his normal fights normally start with him using Aimed shot and then Arcane, so it seems that the fight I had him setup would do less damage and he still pulled agro...

I am at a loss at why he would pull agro like he does.

His armory... http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Area+52&n=Pokenu

Any input or comments is greatly appreciated...

Thanks.

Well, being MM doesn't help (he really should be Misdirecting at the least or even using a Tenacity pet), but his pet is specced very poorly for damage and that could be hurting him as well.

Natural Armor points can be moved to Cobra Reflexes, Charge and Boar's Speed should be dropped into Spiked Collar. The more damage the pet does, the better chance of holding threat it has.

On top of that he has 0 points in Go For The Throat, which is not doing his pet any favors. Chances are his Wolf is ending up Focus-starved very quickly--try checking again and seeing if that's part of the problem. He may need to turn off Bite for a while, until he gets an extra talent point or two, to make sure his pet is actually able to cast Growl.

I would say both the Lady and Aethien have it right .

The pet needs more damage as that will help a little and MM is all about pure DPS and the pet is just a secondary minor bonus.

I know i have not played on my 72 ? 73 hunter for a while but as BM i could pull aggro if i wanted to and it was usually when i intended it so perhaps he should be using his dual talents and going BM until he hits 80 ? thats just a thought as i found both in SV and MM i was easily pulling mobs no matter what i tried .

Well, or that. Smiley: tongue

Chances are he can't quite manage it if the pet not tanking is becoming a problem, though.

Steady > Serpent > Chimera > Aimed > Arcane and if the mob's still alive raptor strike+mongoose bite.
And if that doesn't kill the mob he's in really terribad gear.

I came to this forum because I am having the exact same problem! I'm specced BM, I did switch to survival for a bit and then went back to BM and since then, I can pull agro off my pet with auto-shot. Yes, Growl is on. I've got no idea what's going on here.

The pet's skill Cower has a way of turning itself back on after you turn it off and you relog. I guess it is a bug.

Prowl has the same problem.

These two skills do it so much I had to put them both on my pet bar so I could make sure they were off at all times.

Have not been on my Hunter really that much as of late. Blizz still hasn't fixed this yet?

As for the OP Q.
He is doing enough damage to just pull hate.

I was SV, would send pet in and by the time I hit 3 hot key, the mob was gunning for me because I pulled hate.
It died before it reached my feet, but it was because I was doing enough damage to hank hate.

Yes... I realize this. Smiley: tongue

That is the reason why I had him just use Mark, SS, Arcane Shot, and auto-attack/shoot...

I figured even at his level that wouldn't pull too much agro and his pet would be able to hold the hate... but I am not even sure he even got off the arcane shot before the mob started running at him.

I directed him to this thread so he could read the responses. He has yet to tell me what he has tried to remedy this.... if anything.

I figure he'll just go BM and move around his pet skill points, but who knows.

I wonder if he has tried a different pet ?

I can only think that may be an answer as perhaps something that has thunderstomp may help a little if all others answers fail . it should not be that easy to pull agro unless cower is on and i tried my mid level hunter that has all high agility decent gear and i know she is BM and i was trying hard to max the damage but i could not pull agro at all with a gorilla or a bear but my cat did lose agro a few times , not tried a wolf pet for a while but i would have thought they would be ok .

I am assuming that the tips others gave like focus starvation correcting have now been tried /

You can grind in Aspect of the "my pet does a little more damage and I do a little less".

Sorry, I forget the name of it, it's Sh-4 for me. =)

Aspect of the Viper tones down your hunter's dps in exchange for each shot (even auto-shot, I think) restoring some of your mana. If you leave this on you'll never run out of mana... but you will always be subpar on your damage.

Not sure if this is what you mean though.

Aspect of the Beast is what I was going for.
