Ok, I was testing out my Ret DPS on the dummy earlier (not the best source, I know :P), but I'm not gonna QQ about not doing enough damage or anything like that. What I'm confused about is an item change I made and why my DPS went down.

Currently my Ret gear isn't all that great. I have Signet of Bridenbrad with a 6 strength/6 hit gem in it. I know, lame gem :P Anyway, I had accumulated enough honor to get a PvP item, and after looking at everything I could get, I determined that a new ring would be a good choice. So I bought Furious Gladiator's Band of Triumph which resulted in an increase to my AP and crit while only losing the 6 hit from the gem and 6 haste from the socket bonus.

I used the same FCFS "rotation" and got nearly identical uses of each ability (some off by one or two) and went for 5 mins each. Both times I used SoV and had myself buffed with Might, but no other buffs. With the Signet of Bridenbrad on I came out with 2744.8 DPS, but when I replaced it with the PvP ring I only did 2644.3 DPS. Both times I had 0 missed attacks.

I could provide my Recount numbers if that were needed, but I propose a question: what the hell?? lol. My stats went up, but I lost 100 DPS. Am I missing something totally obvious here? I tried my test again with each ring, and got almost identical results, so I went back to the vendor and sold it for a refund :P

It's been bugging me though cause I can't figure out why the dramatic difference o.O

EDIT: forgot I was going to mention that my helm doesn't have a meta socket, so it's not because I lost gemming requirements. And I logged out in my Ret stuff if anyone wants to take a look.

EDIT2: ok, I DIDN'T have a meta, but now I do :) For anyone who looks, I was using Titan's Outlook, but made myself a Spiked Titansteel Helm.

Was this on the boss target dummy or a lower lvl one? I find for comparing direct dps stats the lvl 80 works a bit better as you'll have less rng and the numbers are a bit more constant. The boss one its not uncommon for dps to change by 100-300 every 'test' even with the exact same gear. This is why the target dummys aren't great for measuring dps, just for working out dps cycles and testing mechanics.

Five minutes is a short enough time to favor either trial by the randomness of crits. Check your crit rate if you can on your next trials, it may account for a fair bit of difference.

It was the normal 80, not the boss.

I'll see if I can't find time to do some longer tests. How long would you guys suggest going for each test in the future? I'm not like hardcore into squeezing every ounce of DPS out I can, but I don't want to make such "spendy" purchases without knowing they'll be worth it :)

Oh, crit rates did vary to some degree, some up some down. I overlooked it at first, but my melee crit was down 10%, so I'm sure that had a lot to do with it. I knew it had to be something way too obvious /feels silly now. Anyway, at least I can get some tips for more effective testing out of this :) Kinda just shooting in the dark as to how best to go about it. Thanks :)

Do at least 10 minute tests on the lowest level dummy for the most consistent results. It might seem kinda boring, but i really improved my rotation and memory of the priority system by doing this. I also use silvermoon as the dummies are spread out enough so that consecration and DS aren't accidently catching a second target.
