I understand from reading here and elsewhere that Warlock (or caster in general) require 17% hit bonus, correct?

But this is for raid bosses from what I understand, yes?

Here's the thing: I like raiding and would like to more but the reality is that it just doesn't happen that often. So I mostly do heroics. A lot of heroics when i can, but heroics nonetheless.

So is gemming for hitcap pointless in this scenario? What would a more appropriate hit % be for heroics (HToC included.) Because if the cap is much lower then it would seem I'm wasting a lot of gem slots on hit that I really don't need most of the time that would be better used gemming for, say, more SP or haste.

As a JC with a growing collection of cuts, it wouldn't be hard to keep a pile of +20 hits on hand should I actually raid.

14% miss is the base +1% per level difference. So 80 vs. 80 = 14%, vs. 81 = 15%, vs. 82 (heroic) = 16% and vs. 83 (raid) = 17%.

Ok so even for heroics it should be 14% then? Sounds reasonable and fairly simple.

I have a +73 hit trinket which covers ~3% by itself I can swap with little difficulty.

Not sure where you got that but I'm fairly sure its wrong. The chance to miss a level 82 target ie heroic is only 6%. Both wowwiki and warlock den seem to confirm this.

roalin is wrong..

in pve

chance to hit a target of equal level.. 4%
chance to hit a target +1 levels, 5%
chance to hit a target +2 levels, 6%
chance to hit a target +3 levels (a.k.a. a boss), 17%

you can cap your hit so that no spells miss, but vs bosses you will always have the possibility of partial resits which can't be negated through spell penetration (so don't worry if you get any partial resists on spells.. also binary spells (curses for example) can't be partially resisted, so instead they get fully resisted (hence why you can still get full resists when hit capped)

in pve you also have +hit talents/abilities.. every class has a 3% hit talent.. so you can (if your gear isn't good enough) lower the required hit from gear by 3% (but doing so does mean you can't have the 'optimum' talent spec)
there is also a 3% hit debuff available from druids and Spriests

finally the alliance get a 1% hit buff from the draenai aura. so in theory you can get a maximum of 6-7% bonus hit from gear/buffs/debuffs in a group

in pvp.. well generally speaking only the equal level part should apply.. but if you do ever fight someone 3 levels above you.. the hit cap is 14% instead and then jumps by 7% per additional level difference

I hope this helps

Ok so . . .since I don't usually pay attention to minor detail like enemy level I checked wowhead and it seems all the Heroic bosses cap at lvl 82.

I have been running with the destro spec you posted Jenovaomega at - what? - 3/12/56? I forget the numbers but it was the version with the 3%hit. I *was* having trouble with low hit on gear so was gemming and doing whatever I could to get to 17%, which I did for awhile. But I'm starting to actually replace a few pieces through drops/emblems finally and wondering how heavy I need to gem if I don't really raid.

We don't seem to ever have an Spriest and I've never seen a hit buff from our duids. And I'm horde since that seems to matter.

If heroic bosses are only +2 levels then I only need 6% hit? So the other 9-10% is . . .wasted?

Yeah if you only do heroics you only need the 6% hit so I'd spec out of suppression and try and reduce your hit some and maybe make a raiding set with hit on it.

If you do 25 man raids you probably only need to get 14% hit through gear or talents, oh by the way the buff from druids is faerie fire assuming they talented into it which all boomkins should. Also you said you had a trinket with 3% hit so if you don't have the hit buff normally you can just gear for 17% with the trinket and just switch it out if you have an spriest or boomkin.
