Need some adviseFollow

#1 Sep 23 2009 at 4:23 AM Rating: Decent
Hi I'm having a bit of trouble in Heroics atm. Up till 80 I just blindly levelled in some sort of hybrid Combat / Assasination spec and I did OK by it. Upon hitting 80 I thought I would check out what the best specs to adopt were.

2 specs that appear the ones to go for are Mutilation and Combat. I have set up both of these specs and am curently experimenting with them on target dummies and in the few instances I have been in.

With both specs I can get around 1700ish DPS on the target dummies with no party buffs using only trinkets and CD's.

However when it comes to putting it into practice then.. well basically I suck. But only on the mutilate spec. Target dummies don't move. My targets dont want to stand still for some reason running here there and everywhere and I find that I have trouble co-ordinating my rotations with energy levels and range on the boss.

I think my gear is OK, I have enchanted all I can with the cheaper enchants and gems, saving the more expensive ones for when I am more rounded out gearwise. I am currently working on the shoulder and head enchants and will soon look to levelling some DPS supporting professions.

I know the rotations. I practice like mad on the dummies. But I just cant get mutilate to work in real fights. I keep dropping back to combat which is easier to manage but I can't help but feel that it is not the optimum DPS spec (from what Ive read).

SO any tips or advise that you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

First thing, you should get a belt buckle so you can add another gem.

Your hit is pretty low. You will read that hit isn't that important, but as mutilate, poisons do around 30% of your damage, so you will want to get 315 hit to cap that out. Also, combat requires more hit than mutilate.

Run heroic gundrak while wearing the KoTEB tabard. Not only will you be building rep for your shoulder enchant, you will be building rep to get a pretty good chest, and Gun has a ring/legs that drop off the last boss.

I personally don't see how you find combat easier, unless you played combat pre-wotlk. With the change to HFB back in the day, mutilate is the easiest by far, imo. If you have a warrior/druid providing bleeds, it is lower dps to put rupture up, unless you have 4pc t8, of course. You might be doing more overall dps/damage in an instance as combat, but more dps as mutilate on bosses.

I've always heard that combat does more damage, but less dps. I know for a fact that on bosses, I was doing more dps than a rogue with wayyyy better gear than me. However, he would be in overall damage.

I'm just assuming that the paper cutters are used with your Mutilate build and not combat. Since combat works better with Slow/Fast weapons. Also, I'd advise to regem your gloves. Strength is okay, but agility would be better as it not only provides AP, but crit as well (or as some have mentioned in previous posts, straight AP).

Feyras gave some good tips. Also don't forget to get the helm and shoulder enchants when your rep is up there with SoH and Ebon Blade (I think they're the ones with the helm enchant... I don't remember Smiley: lol).

I've always been combat at heart so mutilate just isn't for me. I'm sure if I ever run across some really nice daggers, then sure, I may switch back but for now, I'm still combat.

Attempt to get some of the crafted LW Trollwoven stuff. That'll help as well.

Nothing that hasn't been said already, but the LW belt, shoulders (Trollwoven) and the Ice Strikers Cloak would be good starts. Get your hit up. Grind rep for the enchants and gear. Specs look good, just need to get some gear.

Thanks for the advise so far :D

In my post I think i said the issue with Mutilate was that I just couldnt get to grips with it. Not that it wasnt any good. My DPS on trash is shockingly low becasue I cant get the rotation going quick enough before the trash is dead. FoK doesnt seem to add much either. Now I know trash DPS is not always the main issue but it doesnt look good when in a HC i'm sitting at around 800dps before the boss. I must be doing somethign really and I mean really wrong.

Boss fights is not so bad but I lose track of whether I have enough energy, how many ticks are on the boss and sometimes just swing at mid air when, for whatever reason the boss has been pulled out of range. All this confusion and hesitancy leads to lost DPS.

Of all the toons I have levelleld to max level over the years this is definately the hardest so far for me to get good DPS out of in instances once at the level max. Maybe its not for me but I will go down fighting and not give up until I have exhausted every avenue.

So any tip, tricks, addons, UI mods, macros etc you have will be greatly appreciated.

Trash DPS is meaningless. No one in the groups I have been in even uses CC so if you are doing packs just jump in and spam FoK along with the rest of the AoE DPS. On Bosses, open with Garrote, hit SnD with your one CP, activate HfB and then spam mutilate. Keep an eye on your SnD to make sure it isn't going to drop. You should be able to get 4 CPs before your one point SnD runs out and then envenom to refresh. From there its just mutilate to 4 or 5 and rotate between envenom and rupture.

To avoid losing range as your target moves, learn to keybind and mouseturn so you don't have to click abilities, which slows your responses.

Just a couple things I can think of in a few minutes of break...

I don't really ***** much anymore. I point out obvious mistakes that people make.

Because they're dumb.

I don't have the energy to *****, tbh. Too much time spent on classes, sports, working out, etc.

Fapping doesn't count as "working out", Theo.

Hey, just because I don't lift cars or aircraft carriers or whatever you do, doesn't mean I don't work out. Smiley: frown

That made me laugh, Theo. I'm not in the Navy anymore, so now I just lift my truck. I don't have an aircraft carrier to lift.

My point still stands. I lift to tone muscle and stay in shape. All the sports I play are running and finesse sports, so getting huge wouldn't help me.

Not that there's anything wrong with working out to get ripped, it's just not my thing. I'm strong enough to throw a lacrosse ball over 95 mph and shoot a hockey puck 90 mph, and that's fine for me.

I ran a 1 1/2 mile in 9 minutes, consistently while I was in the Navy.

Everyone assumes you can't be fast while lifting, but it really means you have to work harder to be fast.

I ran half of a mile in 5 minutes... on a treadmill... do I win?

Man, I'm so out of shape ever since I stopped karate. I fail. Smiley: nod

Mental, it's a special non-stick spray that you have to spritz on yourself in certain places to get it to slide on graciously.

Oh I know; there was a guy on my lacrosse team who was easily 50 lbs heavier than me, and he was almost as fast.

But the amount of work you have to do to be as agile as a guy that's lighter is almost prohibitive to actually excelling at the sport.

It's one thing to be TO or Adrian Peterson, but those guys work ridiculously hard to be that huge and that fast/agile. I don't have that time.

You quit WoW, so you have to have around 3 extra hours a day, 3+ days a week.

You're right, though. It takes A LOT of dedication to be big, and fast.

Healthy is all you need, really. You can be healthy, and large, from my experience. I've seen guys that weigh over 275lbs outrun guys that aren't even 200lbs. It's all about your training.
