Can't break 3k DPSFollow

#1 Sep 11 2009 at 11:08 PM Rating: Decent
So my DPS in heroics has been between 2400 and 2800 dps (haven't had the opportunity to DPS raids. Get stuck healing) but its stayed that way despite massive gear upgrades. I've been in groups with ele and even enh shamans pulling over 3.5k in crappier gear. However my overall damage has always been higher. I'm assuming its my rotation.

Now I'm aware that the reason most of these shamans are getting higher numbers is because they jump the gun on the AoE and cause problems for the tank. My numbers aren't getting me much respect from other DPS, but I never pull aggro. I target the tanks target, flameshock, lava burst, lightening bolt, then pop off the chain lightening. Giving the tank at least 5 seconds to get everyones attention. Is it possible to be doing at least 3.2k respectively on a consistent basis without being an aggro *****? My armory link is in my sig if you want a good idea of the gear I'm using. Mostly badge stuff.

You're obviously lacking one thing, Hit rating.

Your profile shows you have 196 hit rating, which is a good 100 rating short towards the 289 cap.

I would recommend swapping the yellow gem on your shoulders for a hit rating gem aswell as the blue 24 stam gem in your pants. Intellect and Stam gems are a waste of gem space anyway. And maybe some other yellow or blue sockets, depends on the stats you lose etc.
Slap some Vivid Forest emeralds on them and you are on you're way too 289 hit rating, which should be your highest priority as long as you are below it.

First thing to do would be to get more Hit (you're on 7,47% according to armory, while the cap for horde is 14%) so getting more hit would get you more DPS

another thing: your glyphs,
the best glyphs for elemental would be:
Lightning Bolt
Flame Shock
Totem of Wrath (unless you get 4 piece T9 bonus, then get Lava)

your Meta gem is good, although the 2 blue gems required for it would be best get trough [Vivid Forest Emerald], otherwise just gem for spellpower

Alright working on the hit rating. Should I focus on spell penetration also?

Regular hit rating counts toward spell hit. Spell pen is more of a PvP stat.

Tanks are spiking phenomenal threat off the pull these days. I've run with tanks where I follow them in about ten yards behind when they go in to pull, drop my totems and engage and by the time my Omen pane starts showing threat values the tank is at 35-60k. The main thing to be cautious of is Chain Lightning depending on your tank. Even then they'd pretty much had to have missed a mob entirely for your CL to pull something from them.

Hit (as others have said) is an enormous factor to overall dps. (On a personal note I resent like hell the fact that enhancement shaman have to stack way more hit than elemental :P). If you have a choice between +hit gems/enchants over pretty much anything else and you're not at the hit cap already, +hit is almost guaranteed to give the biggest bang for your buck. At the very least it makes your damage a lot more consistent which gives you a better foundation upon which to evaluate what you're doing and how it is impacting your performance. If you know every single one of your spells is going to hit you can play around with your rotation and see if it makes any difference because you've removed the RNG miss factor from the equation.

Good info. Although as DPS I try to be as helpful as possible. If the healer is having trouble, I'll spam chain heal a few times to help out and I'll even cleanse poisons etc if it goes unnoticed.

well his hit seems high enough for heroics, more never hurts for bossfights I guess... I think as said before, your glyphs are kind of meh. The biggest boost in dps I have found was increasing my haste. For raids you deff want more hit, but for regular heroic runs haste should help you a lot. I noticed you have some nice resto gear on... generaly ele shaman never need mana regen, if you can change around some gear to increase stats like haste and crit (your sp shouldnt change much)

I big boost in dps for my shaman was the new totem from badge rewards I switched out my totem of hex and never looked back its basically an extra 200 haste.

Tanks and other healers may give you a gold star for helping with heals, but this will hurt your dps, just know your still being helpful and dont sweat it bud, dps in heroics is never an issue and if your pushing 2.5k in a heroic and still helping with heals your doing fine. 2.5k in a heroic is great, its all those 1k and 1.5k dps everyone hates carrying through heroics =P

Also a new trinket to replace mana regen one would not hurt either

Yeah I geared up so fast I didn't even realize it was all resto gear. I ran 25 man ToC last night as DPS and everyone insisted I healed instead. So I ended up healing. I snagged a weapon better suited for elemental and working on the rest. But i guess pulling over 2.5k in resto gear isn't so bad. As DPS I had over 700 MP5 (with water shield and totem) so I was never even close to being oom even on raid boss fights. My hit rating is slowly going up.

Update: After a few changes and a new weapon, I averaged between 3100 and 3600 DPS in 3 different instances. Thanks for putting me on the right track!
