Pally PvP questionFollow

With the change to battle grounds allowing for xp, I'm thinking of taking my level 70 pally into the BG's for some xp and a little leveling to get ahead of the quest levels, and just to try something I've never done before.

I've always avoided PvP -- I've been in all the BG's a few times, and found that I just suck at it. But I figure I'll try it one more time.

So some questions:
1) what talent build will be the best for maximizing xp in BG's?
2) what would my tactics be in that type of build?
3) what gear advice can I get as a level 70 to start this experiment?

Thanks!

Ret pala PvP build:

I'm not massively experienced in PvP, but I'd say to start running WG and build up your honour points and get the kit from home city vendors.

I don't know if you're ret only, but if you'd consider healing it's a great way to learn battlegrounds. Everyone loves a healer. Everyone. You'll be appreciated even if you don't know what you're doing. It's a good way to learn the ins and outs of the various BG's and collect honor but still contribute as you learn. I'd start by just hopping into AV and tossing heals at people.

While you're still leveling I wouldn't bother with a specifically PVP spec/gear for BG's. If you find you like PVP and want to do it more you can get into that stuff later.

^^^ That's a really good idea. You wont touch the lv 80s in AV (which is by far the best battleground for xp), but even a 70 holy paladin will make a big difference with holy light nuking, and cleansing cc off people. Just don't expect to be protected, or have melee peeled off you, healers are appreciated in BGs but no one seems to protect you.

I know but everyone 'had' her, and you know what happens, when that happens...

i spent the last 2 months in lvl 80 BGs as Prot! it pwns more than the last 4yrs that i was Ret. no joke. all Naxx-equiv gear and i felt indestructable at times. i would purposefully go after Rets just to watch them squirm as i pounded the crap out of em.

as Prot you can do the same stuff as Ret and so much more. i feel dirty now.

As soon as the ret knows your avenger's shield and hammer of justice are on cooldown, they'll start healing unimpeded. Then you're boned.

If you let someone live more than 15 seconds you're prolly doin it wrong D:

Wait for most of cast -> HoJ
Wait for most of cast -> Avenger's Shield

HoJ is 20sec and until they Bubble they are screwed. Then, repeat process lol.

I would be embarrassed to be beaten by a prot paladin in a dual, or battleground or something. How does that even happen? You've got instant cast flash of light every 3 seconds or so, with a ~85% crit rate. So that's 4000-5000 heal crits every few seconds. Plus the baseline healing amount as a hot if you have sacred shield on yourself (which you always will). Oh, plus a FURTHER 60% of the crit heal as an additional hot.

Prots can stun every 20 seconds. Divine purpose, i can break stuns every 25. Close enough! Shield of righteousness can crit horrendously high as can Avenger's shield but never enough to 2-shot a 20k hp plate wearer.

But the worst part of pvping as prot, at least in my experience? To maintain a mana value higher than.....zero you have to neuter your own heals by keeping divine plea up all the time.

this is the clincher, but also the fun part. you actually DO need to keep an eye on your mana. this is wear BoSanc and JoW come in. at some point you realize your mana is safe and you switch to JoL to start getting your health back.

it sounds simple enough, until your combat log says: Blocked, Blocked, Dodged, Dead.

in my experience, most Rets will see Prot as a non-threat and try to blow their load as if it were a targetting dummy, foregoing FoLs for Exo. by the time they realize this tank is doing 2.5k dps, a Hammer of Wrath comes flying their way.

don't get me wrong though. a well played Ret SHOULD beat a well played Prot 1v1 everytime. i also haven't tried Prot in arena, so i don't know. however, in BGs, for all intents and purposes, Prot will profit alot more no matter the objective.

Well in Arena right now Prot just tosses on Holy gear and is unkillable lol.
