Just Hit 80 Ran TOC your adviceFollow

#1 Sep 01 2009 at 12:43 AM Rating: Decent
Hello,
I've been a long time lurker here, just no reason for me to post. I just hit 80 tonight and ran TOC to get some gear. I gemmed out what I thought was right. I don't have all my enchants due to the maintenance. Anything advice you can give me on upgrades in gear, gems, enchants etc. Thank you.

Firstly, your guild name is awesome :)

Your spec looks good. You could do with some glyphs though. I'm currently running with Glyph of Moonfire, Glyph of Innervate, and Glyph of Starfire. Minor glyphs - Glyph of Aquatic Form and Glyph of Rebirth (otherwise I always forget my reagents....)

First up I would say is working on your rep with Kirin Tor and Sons of Hodir to get the head and shoulder enchants. Then just farming heroics to get conquest emblems. You look like you're well on the way.

I got the Purified Twilight Opal for all my blue/red sockets, because spell power and spirit is awesome. Spirit gives you more mana per second through Intensity and additional spell power as well.

Not sure about your talent build as I'm working on mine as well, but with 200 haste rating, can't you afford to take one point from Balance of Power, especially since you have Improved Faerie Fire? +9% hit chance from talents alone there, plus 200 haste rating which is 7.5% or so, right? Of course, that's on level 80 mobs, so I don't know how that converts to level 83, but it sounds like more than enough.

What does haste rating have to do with Balance of Power? Smiley: dubious

To the OP, two glaring omissions I see are your lack of glyphs (some of the more pro balance druids can tell you what's effective), and you need to remove one point in Intensity and put it into Omen of Clarity, as I'm pretty sure those clearcasting procs save you a lot more mana over time than the mp5 does.

Armory down Armory down!

I wish I could check the armory I could tell you a whole lot more.

But some quick little things as a balance druid you should know.

By going 2 points into Balance of Power, you are hit capped for any heroic that you run. If you plan on raiding with this character your hit cap will need to be 236 if you are alliance with a draenei in your party, or 264 if you are horde. This means 2/2 Balance of Power and 3/3 Improved Faerie Fire to meet the cap of 17% on level 83 mobs.

The only time you EVER will use a spell power/spirit gem is when you're filling in two blue sockets in your gear to meet your meta requirements. Other than that it should either be spell power or hit gems, pending on whether you've met the hit cap or not.

I'll ramble more stuff when armory will finally load up.

Nothing. It's just me typing too fast while thinking of something else. I meant hit rating.

Arex, is pure spell power really better than spell power and spirit? I know you don't get as much raw damage from spell power and spirit, but you get mp5 as well. I went with the sp/spi gems to both meet the meta gem requirements, but also because I noticed a lot of talents in my Resto build promote spirit (+% spirit, % of spirit as spell power) so I figured stacking up on it scaled better than pure spell power. I guess you would do the same with intellect for Boomkin.

Meh, I'm running a solo build anyway. 2/2 Balance of Power (I still miss on the Heroic dummy, though) to keep my DPS solid and I'm already at 1k DPS more than my Feral build, without even trying.

This spec is your mana regen spec. This is great for when you first start out, it doesnt offer the most when it comes to damage, but you won't see any huge drastic damage reduction. This is just gonna let you keep going for a whole lot longer.

Eventually as gear progresses you'll be able to run a spec like mine. The final moonkin spec usually has 2-3 extraneous talent points that you can allocate in different spots. I choose to take one point from Nature's Reach, 3 more yards isn't that much of a deeps increase imo, and put 3 points into owlkin frenzy. Ulduar and ToC have a lot of raid wide damage so it just seems logical for me to use it.

Lose any spirit, intellect, spell power stam, for pure spell power. In a perfect BiS the only gems you'll ever have are 23 spell power gems, and just 2, 12 spell power/10 spirit gems.

Raise your leatherworking up to 450 as soon as you can, also if you plan on raiding think about getting a secondary crafting profession. Engineering, Enchanting, JC, tailoring or inscription. Right now it appears for casters the hot "must have" professions for raiding are tailoring/engineering.

Enchant your gear when it is finally epic. That will help immensely. I do suggest for your boots since you're under hit cap is to pick up Icewalker enchant, and then at some point when you're 12 points over the hit cap switch over to Tuskarr's Vitality. Movement speed in raids is incredibly important.

Get exalted with Kirin Tor and Sons of Hodir. Those give you access to your helm and shoulder enchants.

For some numbers to shoot for.

As I said before 236 hit, or 264 if you're not in group with a draenei.

400 is the soft cap for haste. Anything after wont be as near as beneficial as it was before 400. Also, anything + 400 when you have a Nature's Grace proc will push wrath casting below the global cooldown, resulting in clipping of the cast and cause a dps loss.

But, keep rocking heroics and get yourself in purples, and enjoy being balance :D

Edit:

Mazra, if you're actually gonna go with a solo build, try the one I linked at the top of this post. You won't need any spirit gems because whatever you get from your gear is gonna supplement enough mp5. I actually pvp from time to time with 3/3 Intensity and Dreamstate and my mana is almost never an issue.

As for pure spell power over sp/spirit gems. Pure spell power is better.

Here is the explanation as to why pure spell power is better than the sp/spirit gems, and it happens to have some fun little extras about socket bonuses with it.

Quote:
For the most part I'm going to assume if you're balance you're raiding and need to activate your meta which should be crit/crit damage increase.

But with all these new epic gems you ask yourself, "What do I put into my blue sockets now?!?!"

Arex has the answer!

Now, logic states you would want to for the most part fill your socket bonuses but now that you are able to get 23 spell power runed cardinal rubies your blue sockets become something you can ignore for the most part.

Now for your meta you will need 2 blue gems, this can be done with the 12 spell power / 10 spirit gems. Because of the improved moonkin talent this gem can basically be called "15 spell power and unnecessary mana regen."

12 spell power
10 spirit with the 30% conversion into spell power = 3 spell power.
12 + 3 = 15.

15 spell power + 7 sp socket bonus = 22 spell power

Runed Cardinal Ruby - 23 spell power

15 spell power + 8 spell power bonus = 23 spell power = Runed Cardinal Ruby 23 spell power.

Most blue socket bonuses are spell power. So, the simple conversion is this.

If your socket bonus is not 8 spell power or more, you can ignore the blue socket and put in a runed cardinal ruby.

Once you breach the 8 spell power or greater mark in your blue socket bonus the 12 sp/10 spirit15 spell power gem becomes your gem of choice.

Quick Addendum. I understand that pending what your spirit may be, the 30% conversion its entirely possible that you might recieve one extra spell power from your 12 sp / 10 spirit gem. Due to this, you'll be required to do your own math. Simple math is as far as Arex is willing to go for you.

Some might say the 10 stat gems. Don't do it, the dps increase is not near as good as either the 23 sp or 12sp / 10 spirit.

Makes sense since Balance offers no spirit scaling, right?

In Resto you get a talent which increases your spirit by a percentage. I'm not good with math, but that enables scaling, right?

It offers spirit scaling with Improved Moonkin Form, which is 30% conversion of spirit into spell power.

The problem is though, is that while t8 gear was littered with spirit and hit, the tier 9 is getting back to the correct itemization which is more gear like.

Hit/Haste no spirit
Hit/Crit no spirit
Haste/Crit no spirit

But you do see things like this as well.

Haste/Spirit
Crit/Spirit

Basically its safe to avoid spirit when you can, it's not gonna make or break your game if you choose to take it or not. But the biggest reason you take improved moonkin aura is to add 3% haste, the extra spirit conversion is just an added bonus.
