Need advice on Raid healingFollow

#1 Aug 09 2009 at 2:52 PM Rating: Decent
Hello, I've read the holy heaing guide and it helped and I did alter my healing to run PoM, CoH and Flash and renew, but, in the last run through Nax with a better geared, but not overly geared Shamen, My healing per recount was barely 60% of the total healing by the Shammy.

Also, my over healing was huge compared to his. I did see my heals going off just after his heal hit the tank. I'm guessing that affected the numbers.

Bottom line my healing needs help. I am running 1800 + heals unbuffed, with 11% crit, working to get that up, and 90 haste.... buffed it was coming in around 2200. I still have a lot of items to upgrade and chants to get, but I think my healing should be a lot higher.

Am I just doomed to be healing in the basement as a priest or is it just getting haste up?

Toon is CUFFER, LOCATED ON Lothar.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Getting your haste up is going to be a big deal, as is your crit (lots of lovely surge of light procs). At the moment your flash heals are likely getting sniped by riptides or lesser healing waves, haste helps this. To be honest you named my go-to healing spells for pretty much all content so if your effective healing is low, its either reaction speed or gear thats letting you down. All you can do about the latter is wait for the drops sadly.

I just had a look at your armory, your holy spec is kind of screwy, no holy concentration, meditation or serendipity. These are kind of core talents and I suggest you get them or you'll start running into mana issues in short order.
Also, you should NOT be using glyph of holy nova, get glyph of COH. Thats going to bump up your hps dramatically as it is.

My reference holy build if it helps (2 free unallocated points): http://www.wowarmory.com/talent-calc.xml?cid=5&tal=0503203000000000000000000000205050032302152530005301351000000000000000000000000000

I agree with this and the other build advice.

Also I'd really stress getting that crit up. Eat/elixir for it in the meanwhile. I'm not saying it's a good idea to be competetive about the meters, because I don't think it is, honest. But. With lots of instant Flash Heals? You win.

I partly agree with the previous 2 posts. Or mostly, really. You definitely need the glyph of CoH, but don't be fooled into thinking the holy nova glyph sucks. It can narrow some fights down to spamming holy nova the entire encounter.

Just saying.

It doesn't suck. If you're Disc. If you're Holy there are very few situations I can think of where there won't be a better spell than Holy Nova for what you want to do. Unless there's some particular fight in Ulduar I don't know about (I haven't been in there).

I just noticed that the Glyph of Holy Nova changed with 3.2 to increase both healing and damage by 20%, as apposed to increasing healing but decreasing damage by 40%. I'm thinking it is worth a second look as disc.

Okay, that is pretty cool. Makes it a nice leveling glyph too. Back when people who thought they were funny were using Holy Nova for AOE grinding when the expansion came out, I seem to recall that someone in one of those places where they do the math, did the math, and due to the % of mana it costs it became a lot less viable at level 78 than it was at 72 or some such. Maybe with the glyph change that'll become all the rage again!

Now, I am still kind of new to Holy Healing (Batman!), and have CoH, PoH, and Nova glyphs. I keep Disc as an option with dual specs, so I put together my Holy spec with raid healing in mind. I will say that glyphed Holy Nova really shines in fights that keep you stacked. Followed by a CoH, perhaps sandwiching a SoL proc, it can triviallize splash damage in 10-mans. On spread-out fights it can be a source of disappointment though, when you cast it and only one other person's health bar rises.

In 25-mans, I usually sit in the healer's group, and most of the time we are situated together. Tapping Holy Nova when CoH is on cd usually eases the minds of the other healers so that they can concentrate on the rest of the raid (I don't know how the rest of you healers feel, but I always get a sense of confidence when I am healed by another healer). There really is only one glyph that I am considering changing it with -Guardian Spirit.

Even though I am not tank healing when I am Holy, I have used GS often enough on a tank to recognize its coolness. Being able to use it every minute for the healing increase appeals to me. This does increase healing from all sources, doesn't it? Maybe I should lose the PoH glyph? The 20% hot is nice and fast, but I am wondering how much of it is lost to overheal.

*edit -grammar to the rescue!

I'm just thinking of times when PoH seems really long to cast and I'm struggling a bit. Since I don't have CoH, a couple of quick holy nova and then a PoH might be nice under some circumstances.

On the topic of Holy Nova; that glyph change is a pretty big nerf in my eyes, imo. I use Holy Nova for the heals, not the paltry 500 DPS AOE damage. As a response to Tea; the glyph/spell rocks on fights like 10-man Auriaya, where the entire raid needs to stack up, and especially 10-man Hodir, where adds spawn into an arena filled with 5 or 6 players and aggro is a huge problem. Being able to spam an ability that heals 2-3K every global cooldown on the entire arena team without the risk of aggroing is insane in that fight. Regardless if you're holy or disc, even.

That said, I think your point about glyphed Nova being more useful for disc used to be true but is now kind of a moot point because with the current encounters around, Holy Nova either sucks so bad you won't use it as any spec or rocks so much you use it over everything else.

As for Try; I'd replace the Nova glyph with the GS one in your case (I've done so myself, actually), though if you feel you use Nova a lot even in fights where it doesn't provide complete ownage, you might want to replace the PoH glyph. Depending on the encounter, PoH's HOTs don't heal for too much as PoH sometimes completely fills the party up anyway. Either way, you do need the GS glyph, it's insanely good - when everything's going right GS barely ever procs, meaning you can use it every minute - which conveniently means something like 'every Frozen Blows' or 'Every Mimiron P1 AOE'.

Aside from the "in game stats" advice which I entirely agree with, you might also consider your raid add-ons. Are you using grid or x-perl for raid frames? Do you have your keybindings/mousebindings (whichever you prefer) set up for maximum ease is healing?

A little reaction time benefit from a convenient raid UI set-up can be as good as a haste boost, and it's something you can do w/o getting any new gear.

When I first started raiding on my priest in wrath, I had very similar stats to yours and was getting eaten up by the other healers. Now I'm in much better shape with gear and am topping the meters most nights.

I will stress Mozared's point, though...meditation is a must must must have talent.

LoL, my raid thought I was crazy for suggesting it for Thorim in the arena. But we were running with 3 holy priests, a disc, resto shammy and druid. We decided to keep the priests and shammy in the arena. The priests in 3 different groups just spammed Nova/PoM and free FH the entire arena fight, It worked like a charm, buying the shammy enough time to cast the chain heals and helped the dps a but.. But I do not recommend holy nova for much else in Ulduar asides from Auriaya and Thorim, *maybe* Ignis...

I keep a stack of Nova glyphs on hand for those nights :)

There was a post, I'm fairly sure it was here on zam, that was addressing the use of glyphs like the consumables they are. When glyphs first came out, I put them in and changed them infrequently. I realized that they help so much in certain situations that now I keep a stack of Flash Heal, Holy Nova, and Fear Ward (if no shaman) to interchange for Disc depending on the encounter. (I really wish the Dispel glyph also worked on Mass Dispel!!) Penance and Shield glyphs are mainstays, the others get changed out at least once or twice in a run.

For Holy, CoH will never get changed out, can't think of a time that GS glyph would not be useful, which leaves the Nova and PoH glyph to be decided on. My thoughts are that on 10 man I will use the Nova and in 25, the PoH glyph.

I was thinking out loud again, wasn't I?

I agree with you, Moz, the change to the Nova glyph is a nerf. The only time that it is useful for damage in raiding is just to hurry things along a bit in trash packs. I guess it is cool for those that are still grinding mobs, though.

As mentioned a bit of tweaking and make sure you are comparing apples to apples. On a recent 10 man PUG of Naxx, that I would normally be far and above as the main healer, I was like WTF as I was coming in at 38% of overall healing versus 48% to a druid. I am very well geared for a 10 man run, but still working on proper gear for 25 mans. My SP runs at just shy of 2200 and my Haste unbuffed puts me at about 9% reduction. This is more than enough for most runs.

However, this Druid was honestly demolishing me on the meters for overall healing, and normally I look at over healing and then do not mind... I had more overhealing. So sad...

So I checked his gear and whispered him... he was one of the top druids on the server (his words) and he was checking in at 2800 SP and who knows how much haste. I do not know if that is or was buffed, but regardless, with 600 more SP, it explained a whole lot to me.

So basically, take the advice listed above and do not worry about it.

This is awesome advice. I keep some in the bank because I tend to respec frequently (even with dual spec) to try different things, but it really hadn't occurred to me to carry them with me and change situationally. I really need to level up this inscriber faster. :)
