Possible DW Tank Build?Follow

I've been looking more at the 3.2 talents and been trying to think up a viable dw tanking build now that ToT is out to up the damage of strikes.

http://www.wowarmory.com/talent-calc.xml?cid=6&tal=2050020000000000000000000000305253003020331003002331013510052300000000000000000000000000

That's what I've come up with so far, though I feel it may be lacking... Any tips would be appreciated. (My main spec isn't tanking, but I would like to have a tanking spec for those times when I need to lol)

This is what I am trying out. I tank a 5-Man H ToC with it and seemed to do well. Was with a PuG healer so I couldn't ask if I was more difficult to heal than normal. Threat was not a problem at all, and the healer didn't complain. Will see how it does in a raid on Sunday though.

Any comments/suggestions from a more experienced DK Tank would be appreciated.

I guess I just can't understand why you would want to Dual-Wield.

All the benefits I have seen as far as Dual-Wielding goes are DPS White Damage.

I might be doing it completely wrong, but as far as I can tell my DK gets most of it's damage from Runic Based abilities. If I engage a mob I Icy Touch, Plague Strike, Blood Strike, Death Strike, Frost Strike, Runic Strike, or Death Coil. With six Runes available, I rarely ever have a mob up infront of me for personal time for long. Now on Bosses, they last longer, but I feel like I would be doing more damage/getting more threat with a harder hitting weapon.

If I use one handed weapons, my weapon damage based abilities will be decreased in damage. Even with Frost Talents, I still will not be getting much more damage for these abilities. The two-hander seems to really make Frost Strike shine compared to a one-hander.

Am I wrong thinking like this? Is there an advantage for tanking to having two weapons?

I believe most dual-wielders do so because they prefer the playstyle where you have lots of fast swings rather than a few slow.

I'd use dual-wield as well if it wasn't for my lack of funds to buy better one-handers than my two-handed Titansteel Destroyer. I prefer having two weapons for inexplicable reasons.

Cool Mazra, I guess what I was looking for was some math that said:

Two-Hander Good, Dual-Wield Better for tanking; Two-Hander Better, Dual-Wield Good for DPS

I need to throw my sanity away and force myself to read through Elitest Jerks.

I don't think there's any math that proves dual-wielding is better for tanking. Even with the new talents, you'd need some pretty badass one-handers for it to be worth it. Especially since those talents are in Frost and everyone seems to be Blood tanking these days. Frost also uses Howling Blast which couldn't care less about the weapon you're wielding.

Maybe if you could enchant both weapons with some kind of tanking enchant, but I'm not even sure that would be reason enough. You lose out on a lot of hit chance when you dual-wield because off the insanely high chance to miss with your off-hand weapon. I'm afraid I can't provide the math, but so far I haven't heard that dual-wielding should be better. And even if it is, I imagine it's only by a small amount.

Good luck with Elitist Jerks, though. I had a mild seizure trying to find a PvP thread that was updated for the latest patch. Confusing board system.

The Peacekeeper Blade is a pretty bad-*** tanking 1-hander that drops in Heroic ToC. It’s roughly equivalent to the mace you’d get from Thorim in Ulduar 10-man, and it’s not unique. Even easier to get are the Red Sword of Courage and the Teldrassil Protector, but they’re only about ilevel 200.

Yeah Maz, I am right there with ya. I just can't see Dual-Wielding being all that great for DK. While there are weapons that might be nice, all of our abilities care about base weapon damage, and that is it (as far as the weapons are concerned). So I feel like it would be stupid to use a one-hander that would certainly have a lower base damage.

Two-handed tanking works out better IMO. Harder hits, better aggro. Since your gear isn't focused on raising damage values, it's essential that you hit as hard as you can, and using a two-handed will do just that.

What caught my eye is

Quote:
Threat of Thassarian now also causes Rune Strike to use both weapons when dual-wielding.

I didn't jump up and down screaming that ToT now makes DW tanking zomgOPlol. However, it makes it more viable (technically speaking).

My question is does anyone have an idea of how much more viable is it? Is it the slightest of increases or is it a huge help now? 1) It will hit harder as DW than it used to which is more threat, 2) because it doesn't miss, the hit rating isn't as important now, meaning you can itemize back to dodge/stam/parry.

I'm just curious over anything.

This is my duel wield tank build. I tank in VoA,Ony,Ulduar, and ToC. I personelly have noticed the difference in threat since the latest patch. One thing is to duel wield your hit cap and expertise cap are more than double to be effective and not miss. I built this to not be the typical sponge that most blood takes are. I built mine more around mitigation having the parry runes on my one handers. With this i get as much dodge as the bloods but i increase my parry by 4% over what they can get.

I noticed a pretty big increase in DPS when I switched from single-wield Frost to dual-wield Frost. Don't know how it will affect tanks once they implement that one-handed +def rune, but right now it seems that with decent gear, your strikes do more damage with dual-wield than single-wield.

My Frost Strikes crit for up to 10k compared to the old 7k. Obliterate crits for around 9k, compared to the old 7k. Basically, whenever you get a double crit (thanks to Killing Machine, for instance), you do way more damage with dual-wield than single-wield.

I'm doing a solid 2.8k DPS in heroics with spikes of up to 4k on trash packs. The more the merrier, basically.

I've Dual wield tanked for a couple runs now to see how it is, just on some 5-mans and it's worked out decently. Threat of Thassarian is a God send for your frost, rune and blood strikes, and as mentioned before Howling Blast doesn't rely on weapon damage at all, an attack I use constantly to keep AOE threat up. Overall I like the dual wield style more, but I haven't tried it in a raid.
