New Resto ShamanFollow

#1 Jul 10 2009 at 10:17 AM Rating: Decent
Recently I dinged 70, purchased dual-spec, equipped all the resto gear I've been accumulating and headed out to save the Horde from the terrors of the world.
Right off the bat I was asked to heal the Nexus. Not a difficult task since the tank was 80 and an 80 mage came along for the ride, but it did give me a chance to work out some bugs in my UI, rotations and buffs.
Last night I was asked to run UK, this time with a more level appropriate group. My workload was infinitely harder. Nothing I didnt expect.
I would start off each pull, dropping stoneskin and healing totem at minimum. We had a pally so BoW was covered eliminating the need for Mana Spring. Water Shield on myself. I would Earth Shield the tank and cast riptide just as he pulled. Most pulls were uneventful but I always was close to OOM by the finish.
On bosses, I would go OOM, Mana Tide and possibly a pot to get through the encounter.
Is this normal to run through mana as fast as my arcane Mage?
I realize that MP5, Intel and SP will come along in bigger numbers as level increases, but in level appropriate gear I would think this would be indicative of playing a Shaman healer.
I used healbot, burnt CD's when appropriate and our dps seemed in line with a 70-72 group. Tank seemed to be knowledgable, but I didnt inspect him.
Should I expect to always be cutting mana close on each pull?

You've got good glyphs and a good spec. For healing you just want more MP5, but don't sacrifice SP. The thing is, most groups may end up being like that because no one has good stats, so tanks get hit hard (providing they even have enough Defense, they may be getting crit, even if just a tiny chance), your heals are low and avoidances are low.

It sounds like you did fine, I would say wait until the tank has taken damage though, before casting RT. Don't want to waste the first heal from it.

And you may have just had slow DPS, and you had to keep your tank alive through long pulls. But these two runs sound pretty normal.

Like what was already said, don't cast riptide at the start of a pull. Your just wasting a heal and gaining agro right away. Your main heal should be LHW on most pulls. CH if there's AoE damage, and HW if the tank isn't taking any spike damage. Remember to keep your water shield up all the time.

But feel free to sacrifice SP for MP5. It doesn't matter how hard your heals are hitting if you don't have the mana to cast them. Once you feel that you have the mana/mp5 needed to get through a fight then you can focus more on SP and crit, but don't toss a peice of gear with more MP5 just because you'll lose 20 SP. You can't know what every group is going to be like so it's better to have the mana/mp5 to deal with a slower group where your healing more per pull.

Once you start picking up gear from Northrend things will come easier for you.
