How to use Rawr.Class - Theorycrafting ToolFollow

#1 Jun 03 2009 at 8:07 AM Rating: Excellent
First, go to http://www.codeplex.com/Rawr/ (it is also linked in my sig) and get the newest version. It is updated fairly often, so I recommend whenever you are going to optimize to check and make sure yours is up to date.

Note: As of right now, not every single spec is supported by Rawr. Many are, but do not be surprised if it may give weird numbers for your class.

By default, Rawr is not compatible with Macs/Linux. You will need to use an application such as Mono to run it. According to the latest patch notes for Rawr "If you're running Rawr via Mono on OSX/Linux, you'll need to use Mono v2.2. The latest version (v2.4) has a bug that prevents Rawr from running."

For other potential errors:

- If you get a 'Cannot access a disposed object' error, that's a bug in an old version of the .NET Framework. Uninstall all versions of .NET Framework that you have, and reinstall the latest from Microsoft (3.5SP1)
- If you get a 'The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135)' or similar error when starting Rawr you most likely don't have .NET Framework installed. You can get it from http://www.microsoft.com/NET/.

The following instructions are for Rawr.Mage, but I'm sure that they are quite similar in principle for the other supported classes/specs.

Opening Screen
Import your Character
Your Character
Cast Rotation Information by Hovering Over the Acronyms
Your Talents + Glyphs
Your Raid Buffs
The Options Tab
Selecting Different Gear Slots
My Bracers Example
Choosing Gems to Optimize
Using the Optimizer
After Anobix was Optimized
My Character Screen after being Optimized

The software isn't 100% perfect, but it will give you an excellent view into your gear, gem choices, enchants, and what you can do to improve/where you can get better gear/what rotations work better.

Screen shots + info on screenshots has been posted. Please respond with comments/questions/ideas/etc.

I may try to get this one into a separate Sticky.

I like it. Some of the features RAWR has aren't the easiest to figure out how to utilize by yourself, and the screen shots that you posted really help explain what they do. I'd definitely support having this as a sticky.

Anobix, I was trying to download it for my mac, but either A) I'm an idiot and don't see the mac version, or B) It doesn't exist.

Do you know if there is one available?

Rawr is not directly compatible with macs but you should be able to find a guide on their forums for how to get it working.

I will edit the original OP with a link as well.

edit: you will need to use an application called Mono on OSX/Linux. And version 2.2 is what is compatible according to this:

Can be found here: http://ftp.novell.com/pub/mono/archive/2.2/download/

Thanks a lot Anobix. I just got my mage to 80 a week or so ago. I got the epic achievement tonight by getting some gloves off of Razor, so I geared quick. Turning Tide is amazing.

This is pretty amazing I must say.

I have to ask though, my DPS in raid usually falls between 3.5k-4k on bosses. That is with optimal buffs(pally for kings, elem shammy, druid, and priest). With same thing, according to Rawr my DPS should be 5353 over a 5 min fight.
Does it use a different spell strat than ABx3 -> ABar/MBar?

I'm assuming its most basic settings don't account for things like movement.

I played around with Rawr a bit earlier today after reading Anobix's posts, and if you scroll down farther, you can see what your estimated dps should be for each type of rotation. There's quite a few of them listed, and it's a tad bit confusing, but if you read them a few times you should be able to figure it out. For the most part, it seems like ABx3 and then AM regardless of proc is pretty close to the best dps rotation. There's a few others that are a bit higher, by maybe ten to twenty dps, but that's hardly enough to warrant giving up the ease and simplicity of ABx3, AM.

Rawr claims that I should be doing just under 3k dps with that rotation, and I seem to avg. about 2.7k so I would assume that it doesn't consider things like movement for specific fights.

Getting within a few hundred dps of what Rawr says is pretty good, as it is normally taking into consideration proper cooldown timing, etc as well. Rawr can take movement into consideration -- under the options tab you can change the % that you are moving throughout a fight (I believe is the metric that it uses).

Yeah, seeing that figure in Rawr made me feel a whole lot better about my dps. :-) I've been beating myself up about it, wondering why it is there are Arcane mages who can pull 6k+ dps when I can't even do half of that! Especially since I'm almost in full epics now (although only three of my pieces are lvl 213) and there are people in my guild that are out dpsing me that are less geared than I am. I have a tendency to get a bit over competitive at times.

Nice guide. RAWR can be quite daunting at first.

If you want this to be a sticky it should be in the generic WoW section tbh.

You should add something about creating custom gems sets. They can be helpful when trying do assemble a gear set.

Good idea, I will take a look into that and see if I can throw something together.

I looked at the application, and when viewing the Help stuff it linked me to:
http://rawr.codeplex.com/Wiki/View.aspx?title=Gemmings

Which explains it as well as I could have, and it is already written. woohoo!

Anobix you rock. I have been feeling a bit platuead lately and had some questions about some items I got recently wondering if they were really upgrades or not. I always wanted to try Rawr but never got around to it. Now that we are pushing into Ulduar I really want to maximize and know what upgrades for me in the mostly 10 mans we do.

Anyway I DLed the tool and tried some different gear mixes. I referenced your screenshots several times, very useful!

I had most of it right but found out that my "Figurine - Twilight serpent" is rated much higher than my "Sundial of the Exiled" especially given my current gear set and mixed with "Embrace of the spider". Good stuff. I love seeing how mixing around items affects the DPS of different spells. I will be using this allot as I "hopefully" start getting some juicy new shinies in Uldaur. We just started this Sat in 10 man and already cleared 5 bosses including all of seige (yay!). I lost both rolls on new mage shinies that dropped though heh.

/salute

*edited to say if you Armory me it's not always my raid set I am wearing becuase sometimes I wear stuff in town just becuase it looks good together or the colors match. I know I'm vain *blush

I cannot get this to work no matter what i seem to try. I've downloaded it and put it in the correct folder, however when i log on and check my addons button its no where to be found D:<

quite frustrating.
using vista, any suggestions?
#16 Jul 07 2009 at 4:49 AM Rating: Good
It isn't an addon, it is an actual application that you run.
#17 Jul 07 2009 at 4:54 AM Rating: Decent
/sigh

Guess i should have read better. Just figured it would be an addon. Thank you :P

Hey Anobix, just wanted to say great post as usual. I like this mage forum because the posts always seem to stay civil.
My question is regarding replacing a one handed weapon with a two handed weapon. Does RAWR take into consideration the off-hand weapons stats when calculating if the two hander is better then the single? I had a staff drop in Ulduar and I gave it away because I just wasn't sure if it calculated them together. Thanks for all the great help, Schnitz

* sorry if this was already covered.

That is a good question. I believe that it does not calculate when you look at the two. So you will want to see what the DPS value of your offhand is + a mainhand to find out what would be better for you.

I will likely be keeping my Lifebinder staff (off of Freya) for a while.

Sorry to necro/bump an old thread of mine, but I figure it is worth an update.

The fine coders of Rawr and our friends at EJ (Elitist Jerks) have put together a web-based Rawr solution for those that have had trouble running it in the past, be it from different OSes (OSX, etc) or some other reason. It seems to be a little slow as they are still working on it, but I tested it on my mage and everything appears to be functional at least for basic gear selection etc.

http://elitistjerks.com/rawr.php

Is the link to the new web-based utility.

Enjoy ;-)
