I'm still trying to pin down what I want my eventual dual spec to be. I am main spec 51 prot and I really like playing a defender type character. Today it occured to me that with Titan's Grip you could use a 2-hander and a shield at the same time and combine with some Prot tree for improved shield use. I think this would make a cool concept (hands up who wants to wield a spear and shield?). I have a couple of questions:
1) Has anyone tried this?
2) Has Blizz given any reason why we can't use Polearms with TG? (Wowhead says that the highest DPS and max damage for each 2 hander is the same across all 4 categories)

A) No idea why we can't use polearms, I imagine because Blizz wanted them to be mainly hunter (and now feral druid) weapons.
B) I fury-tanked my way to 80 and it is damn fun seeing 5k revenge crits at 73. Still, I wouldn't want to try to run heroics without some of the higher prot talents. Multi-mob tanking can get a bit hairy w/out the occasional shockwave.

You can't use a Polearm with TG because there isn't a one-handed Polearm animation. Why they didn't just use the dagger animation is anyone's guess
And no, it's not that good of an idea. It sounds cool but in practice with the damage penalty on TG you suffer quite a bit.

I just want to wield two shields at once... **** weapons. I want two shield slams on seperate cooldowns!

I second the idea. Doubly so if we get to add block values from both shields, and if both can proc a block on any given attack. Risks making Block a useful stat on bosses. :)

I'm confused what the spec would be. Choosing TG means 51 points in fury, leaving at most 20 points in prot. This doesn't give access to any really juicy abilities, so you're left with making do.
Yes it may give you access to easy spell reflects, but the TG nerf reduces the damage you do with that two hander (and with your shield slams etc.) and you don't even have another two hander to mitigate it. Your shield slams won't be quite as juicy (by missing Critical Block, Gag Order and the One Handed Specialisation as well as probably having less Block value overall).
I haven't crunched any numbers but I don't think your TG/shield combi will add up, but as a great lover of sword and board in both pve and pvp I'd love to be proved wrong. Give it a try and report back.
