PVP: Moonkin (resilience vs. spelldamage)Follow

#1 May 20 2009 at 11:25 AM Rating: Decent
I've been gearing up on resilience equipment lately, from battlegrounds & wintergrasp. I want to try some arena stuff, but the guys I'm going to be grouping with suggested that I'd want to go with more spellpower than more resilience, because obviously the point of arena is to kill someone the fastest.

So... which is better? My "good" Naxx dps equipment, or my average (600+) resilience equipment?

I've also got quite a decent set of melee equipment from raiding, but no resilience. Would it be better to go cat?

Thanks

Same principle as raiding awareness applies: You can't DPS (or heal) if you're dead.

I'd say go with Resilience unless you hit a satisfactory number (can't help you there, really not a big PvPer) and then fill the blanks with raid gear.

Well...

There is more to arena as boomkin than you think. The general rule is find the balance between resilience and spell power/crit. But due to the fact that a boomkin has a HUUUUUUUUGE opener for damage output its tough to find that balance.

What I've done for my threes team is this.

It's a Holy Pally, Arms Warrior and myself. We switch up between me as resto, my warrior goes near full pve, or I go boomkin and the warrior puts on more pvp gear. When I'm boomkin I keep my two minute trinket and keep about 200-300 resilience.

I open up stealth, wait til the warrior hits someone, I focus target them and pop starfall and trees on that target and cyclone the healer. Generally the damage output is completely over someones head with the cyclone so we can drill them down fast.

Like I said, its a hard balance to figure out but once you've got it go for it because good boomkins are scary as hell in arena.

I think it depends on your team. Are you arenaing with a healer or another dps? I always tend to err on the side of resilience over sp/ap but there's no point in dumping, say, 500 sp to get 100 resil.

It all depends on what gear you have but generally it's nice to stack resilience in your 4 of your main 5 head, legs, chest, body, or feet, plus trinky and then put on nice spell power gear for your weapon, wrist, hands, back, neck, and rings, especially if you have some of the better items for those accessory slots from naxx 25 or ulduar since they often have nice stamina boosts and vastly superior caster stats compared to pvp gear. The set bonuses you have available to you may affect how you feel about equipping your body slots.

If you're going to go as cat you probably need resilience gear.

Thanks for the responses! I'm including an update & a new question below:

UPDATE:
We played our first few matches: me (moonkin), a healing priest, and a healing shaman. The theory being that I could take out their healer faster than their two dps could take out our two healers.

It didn't work out that way. I don't recommend it ;)

When the shaman switched to elemental, we started winning with regularity. I think it helped to get a handle on the flow of the fights. I'd spam wrath at their healer and wait for the healer to bubble-up or shield-up or whatever, and when that dropped I'd throw down the starfall & treants. Easy peasy.

QUESTION:
So assuming I should balance out resilience and crit/spell, is there a "minimum" crit/spelldam I should be aiming for? If I can get to the decent "minimum" amount, I can fill up the rest with the other, etc...

(currently: +1600 dam, 11% crit, 689 resilience, with 4 pieces of blue-78 PVP gear, unbuffed)

My 3v3 team (It's an odd one) consists of my hunter, a boomkin, and a mage. Our boomkin always asks the same sort of questions, res or SP? Some matches the extra res woulda helped, others some more SP coulda helped more...

Either way, we usually have enough burst damage to kill the healer immediatly, or whatever person we deem the easiest to kill so the match becomes 3v2 the quickest.

I was kinda hoping that there would be a more solid answer here, but since either way sounds like it would work depending on your team, I guess you really need to just find a harmonious balance of nukage and survivability.

689 res is a good start. I suggest though working for your hateful gear. The four set bonus is an absolute must for boomkins because a chance to proc an instant cast starfire can make or break a kill on a healer or dps.

Also if you can get your rating to over 1600/1650/1750 and so on you'll be able to start picking up furious offset gear which will make a HUGE difference because from deadly to furious there is like a 15 sp difference on most items. Plus you're gonna get your crit.
