*If possible, Can we make this a sticky for future ref?*

I have read the greatest mage post ever many times and other simmalar posts on here. But can anyone post the importance of certain stats for a fire, frost, and arcane mage??

Example Fire

Sp > Hit > Crit > Int

I know this is wrong but its just an example. Figure I could use it as well as anyone else and I would be a quick ref.

It depends on your gear level. The best way to know is to use a theorycrafting program like Rawr (linked in sig) (or if you are so inclined to do it yourself) to find out what stats make the biggest dps increase for you.

If you are off by a couple points or even 1% on hit, it isn't as big of dps increase as spellpower would be etc. It is important to be close to cap, but it is not really ever worth gemming for.

For me as fire it is:

Spellpower > Haste > Crit > Hit > Spirit > Int

- I assume that arcane will be quite similar to that, but probably swapping spirit and int

Frostfire:

Spellpower > Crit > Haste > Hit > Spirit > Int

Frost (guessing... because who raids as frost... really.)

Spellpower > Haste > Crit > Hit > Int > Spirit

I actually had a frost mage give me a run for my money the other day in H UP. I was rather ashamed lol. All he did was cast blizzard, and even with me having SP food and a flask and casting blizzard on groups of trash and my regular rotations on singles and bosses, he came really close to beating me. Of course, I did die a lot because the tank sucked. I didn't do anything different from what I normally do in heroics, and I died 8 times, once or twice those were from wipes. The healer died 4 times and whispered me after the dungeon complaining about how much the tank sucked.

I would hope that a frost mage casting blizzard would out-dps most other AoE builds overall. With frostbite, shatter, and finger of frost procs their AoE dps is fantastic.

Yeah good for packs of trash but not so much for single target bosses in raids. I've thought about off speccing it just for trash duty then popping back to arcane for bosses but it hardly seems worth it so I have not bothered yet.

Yeah, it also depends on where you are at. From my experience in Ulduar, there really aren't too many AoE packs (fought up through Thorim).

We had a major spring drop off in raid attendance so I have not set foot in Ulduar yet sadly. Honestly though my play time has been way down as well and I have been moonlighting in LoTRO. But we plan to hit Ulduar 10 man next week finally. :)

I was just surprised because everyone talks about how horrid frost is for raiding. I know heroics and raids are very different, but I'm pretty sure that they both typically use the same type of builds.

Yes and no. Heroic fights are significantly shorter than raid ones. Frost has decent AoE and decent burst, but fire and arcane, etc has much better sustained damage and better damage and crit modifiers etc.

Indeed. When in doubt, if you can put out heavy burst with your build on a boss, it's not bad for a heroic boss. Almost none of the fights should last more than a couple minutes, so burst plays a big role in there.
