"DPS" ClarificationFollow

#1 May 05 2009 at 8:16 AM Rating: Decent
If this has been asked before, I apologize. I couldn't find it. Semi-embarrassed to ask because I don't see where anyone else has but...

When prospecting for groups and you're asked "What's your DPS?", are they looking for a sustained target dummy number, your average for a whole instance, or? I would assume target dummy since there are a billion variables from fight to fight, group to group, but figure it's better to clarify.

TIA

If I talk about my dps, I'm personally talking about my numbers on a target dummy for about 5 minutes, or so. You should always hit the target dummy for at least 5 minutes, imo, to show your sustained damage.

Anyone can blow all of their cooldowns in a few minutes and have 4k+ on a target dummy, but that isn't an accurate number. Also, make sure you're doing your test on the Heroic dummy, because the others will lie about your numbers.

If you use your unbuffed dps, then it is better because people know it will be a bit higher with buffs.

Quite honestly, it's hard to say. Each person that asks that is looking for a certain amount on just bosses, on trash, or target dummies. I usually just tell them an average amount between the three. For example, on my rogue (75), I can usually pull between 700-1100 dps. So I'll tell them, "around 900, give or take depending on the situation and what we're fighting."

(and this is with me having crap for gear and still combat. Waiting to try out Mut once I get can daggers.

Static answer for me is unbuffed heroic raid target dummy. 2.5k in my case.

Just tell them 5k, and say you're lagging if you're called out on it.

I give them my Thaddius DPS with Hysteria, 2x Tricks, Haste Pot, Bloodlust.

Fixed.

edit: When asked I would offer a number with a qualifier. Like, "3.4k on Patch-25" or similar. Just using a number outside of context is kinda pointless.

I figured the same. Tried to get in a heroic CoS group last night. Told the group leader "2.3k on heroic dummy" when asked. Got turned down.

Still tough to get invites with the constant "5k DPS LFG Heroics" in trade, but at least I felt confident knowing what to say, lol. Thanks for the advice.

I'm beginning to wonder about the general population on my server. Just now, and granted it's after midnight, but...

I get a whisper, "Want to dps heroic Gun'Drak and if so what's your dps?"

I answered "I can. 2.3k on heroic dummy"

He replied "Dummy? There's no need for that."

/facepalm

(And yes, he seriously thought I was calling him a dummy. I had to remind him about the guys with wooden swords)

Dig, you should transfer over to Draka, if you're horde. It seems that is where all the cool kids are these days.

It makes me upset I didn't transfer over there on my druid. Since Therion gave up on his rogue, traitor.

Well you could always roll a DK on there and then level with me Smiley: grin, since I have no one to level with at the moment, until I can catch up with Isyris, which I highly doubt at this point.

I might start leveling a toon on Draka today actually.

Probably a fat tauren druid, warstomp inc.

I started a tauren druid as well on there, but I haven't started playing her yet. I also started a priest and another rogue.

Isn't Draka a PvE server?

Yea, it is, but so is Proudmoore. I used to play on PvP servers, and enjoy them for the most part, but when you're leveling or trying to farm, it gets annoying to get camped. On Mannoroth the Alliance to Horde ratio wasn't that great, either.

Ysondre is PVP and most of the horde know better than to **** around with my guild. We're rather notorious for camping scrubs who try to gank us when we're farming.

In one instance. One of our rogues was farming on her druid, with her fiance who is normally ret, but was prot and he was mining. They were jumped by 4 horde from this no name guild. About 5 minutes later our guild showed up in full force and effectively camped them for about a half hour.

This just lead to a HUGE world pvp fest in Sholozar. We were around the nessingwary dude and being the only druid I keybound a macro that made me dismount and typhoon with two clicks so I could knock people off their mounts and get them in combat. Usually I was able to hit the water but I died a few times doing this. We did kill a huge amount of people though.

I think starting on a PvP server thickens your skin and makes you pay a little more attention to your surroundings.

Ares,
Your example is really the only reason why I still play. I miss the Isle, where ganking 1 player could start a 2 hour war with another guild. Nowadays me and my ret buddy have to sit by the dragon daily in Icecrown and camp allys trying to complete their quest. We've gotten into a few guild v guild wars (we end up on top, mainly b/c my awesomeness scares the kiddies away).

A lot of the people that spent a while at 70 on the Alliance side of Draka don't even bother touching my rogue when I'm in WG farming primals; they know that they'd get raped.

The Alliance that weren't big PvPers at 70 come after me, but quickly learn that you shouldn't **** with me in world PvP unless you bring more people.

Do they try to FoK you? I'd try to FoK you with my rogue, but I'd fail.

That's why you need to level your rogue to 80; then you'll be able to FoK me.

I'm trying. I'm almost 76. Just haven't been playing much this weekend.
