Dual Spec - Starting Ret helpFollow

#1 May 01 2009 at 2:19 PM Rating: Decent
Let me first say that I've been 100% holy for my WoW career. I picked up a few ret items on offspec rolls on some guild runs. I bought dual spec earlier this week and pieced together what I have now. Please note that I basically spent 0g on items (except gems). I'm thinking that's going to have to change so I can get my dps up, which brings me to that point. I never used the practice dumbies before and now I'm only doing around 1900 dps (without Avenging Wrath). I typically open with CS - jow - DS - Consc - exorcism and then repeat as the CDs are ready.

- My first question would be is that the close to what my rotation should be like?
- With my current gear (I know there's a couple bad pieces in there) is that what i should be expecting. I didn't think just a few bad pieces would drop me down to heroic-dungeon level dps (it's around 2k for heroics right?)

What should I be replacing first? I know the trinket stands out, but I can't seem to find any quest rewards that I haven't already done/tossed out, and I haven't found a darkmoon card for sale. Please note the Claymore is a new item which is why my hit rating jumped so high, I didn't want to regem entirely if I'm going to be buying new stuff right away.

Any other general tips for a new ret would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Well the first question would be what do you want ret for at all? And no I'm not being a hypocrite I play ret but "what for" was answered before I even put 1 point into ret. Notice it's not a why question it's a what for question.

If you just want a spec that works for solo just go use it until you get the hang of it.

If you want to PvP that's complicated. It depends on HOW you want to PvP. So the answer there is to go PvP and slowly get the feel of "need this more than that, need that more than this".

If you want to "be able to fill that role" don't worry, melee dps are abundant and ret is overplayed. You're more than welcome to it if you WANT TO, but if what you want to play is holy just stick with it and let others do the other parts.

And the basic rotation for most things is judge cs exor ds consec for single target and judge ds consec cs exor for multi target. That's not minmaxed but it's good enough. If you want some uber minmaxed spell rotation someone else will probably give you a better answer.

Thanks for the tips.

Mainly it will be for PvE. I know I have a good amount of PvP equipment but that's just because I had max honor points and WG marks that I used... It's better than most equipment you can find in the AH on my server.
I'm just wondering what I can do immediately to improve. Before I even tested it I thought, with the gear I had, I would be doing more thank 2k dps without much trouble. It was pretty frustrating when it came out to less-than-heroic dungeon dps. I'll be keeping an eye out for upgrades and keep the general rule of keeping hit capped and gearing for strength.

Well from what I can see, you have more than a couple items that aren't ideal for Ret. I don't know what you are using for your weapon, I'm assuming Titansteel Destroyer, unless you got a better drop in Naxx (you logged out with your flowers and basket equipped). Reporting 1900dps with the gear you have is not that surprising for me. Were you using seal of blood or command? When doing my dps tests, I found that SoB was doing way more damage than SoC. Also, while this doesnt effect your dps, start getting into the habit of Judging Light (unless there is another ret better geared than you in the instance/raid you are doing.

When gearing up, I used Maxdps.com to guide me whether one piece is better or not, if your load your character in, it will adjust the weights of items based on your current gear (hit/expertise cap). When working the dummy, I was averaging about 2600 dps, so while a difference, It's not like im pulling out 4k dps on my own with fairly decent Heroic/AH/Vendor gear.

Man, have standards changed - it wasn't so long ago that 2k was just fine for a heroic, and even 1300-1500 wouldn't get you booted. I've been collecting my offspec set for a bit longer, and I'm doing 2200-2600 in 10-mans when asked. I probably need more dummy time too, to get my cooldown management better, but over 2k you're not weighting the group down unless you're going for e.g. 3-minute Patch.

As for gear, you're close to the melee hit cap, which is good now that Ret is on a 2-roll system. I was significantly over for a while because of items that were upgrades even without the extra hit - took me a while to find some sidegrades that I could swap in.

If your main spec is Holy, and considering your progression, you're probably past the point where Emblems of Heroism do any more good, so you can go for the melee necklace, belt, and/or trinket (all of which are nice). Beyond that, the only quick and easy item I'd consider is the Hodir rep shoulders (although, if you're dripping with cash, the BoE Emblem of Valor wrists are nice).
