Lvl 36 Frost Mage In Need of HelpFollow

#1 Mar 30 2009 at 11:50 AM Rating: Decent
So here's the deal. Im a frost mage and im not putting out any sort of decent DPS at all. Basically i use FB till they come in close, then CoC, Frost Nova, blink away and FB till dead. I understand that i shouldn't be too focused on my DPS but i can help but feel that an average DPS of around 80 is horrible. Help please...

can you link your armory?

You did upgrade your spells from the trainer right? The way you are doing things looks fine to me, you can toss a fireblast as well if you need to finish off a guy.

Here's the build as I'd recommend it at 36.

Your DPS doesn't come from the spell hits so much as it comes from the fact that every time you root the mob(frost nova or frostbite procs), you're almost guaranteed a follow up crit and those crits are always double damage instead of the 1.5 damage normal spells get, thanks to talenting Ice Shards.

Ya hit the nail on the head, there. Don't obsess over DPS until you get to 80. If you're killing your targets without too much trouble, don't worry about the actual numbers...

Maybe it's just me, but you seem to be blowing a lot of unnecessary cooldowns. For my frost mage, I Frostbolt for pulling, Frost Nova, then run a bit away and 'Bolt 'em down to about 5-10% health, then wand the remainder down. This saves mana (5-second rule: if you don't cast a spell for 5 seconds, your mana regen starts ticking) and cooldowns. I'm paranoid, yes, but I like to save spells like Cone of Cold and Blink for emergencies, like when I have to kite 'cause FN broke early or was resisted, or I get jumped by a wandering mob or two and need to run for it. It seems like every time I randomly decide to kill this guy a little quicker and use CoC, I get jumped by 3 guys that I could have escaped if I'd had an AoE snare ready...

wands at low levels are amazing, they generally do more dps than your spells until around level 20 or so, but still do pretty darn good dps when you are running low on mana and need to finish a guy off.

To be honest, the advice above is good. I have my own way if that doesn't get your ball rolling.

Try and get 3-4 mobs at a time. This way when you Frost Nova, pop Blizzard. If you talent spec'd right, they should all die in 1-2 blizz, with no other casts. It's ridiculously fast.

If you prefer 1v1, don't forget you have fire spells. I do Frostbolt -> Fire Ball -> Frost Bolt -> CoC -> Nova, Fire Ball -> Frost Bolt. Not much lives through that. Fire Ball destroys Frostbolt, and I have all Frostbolt talents. Now factor in 50% crit with it? Boom. If they get close enough to hit, or have low enough HP, Fireblast is a nice, instant way to finish a fight.

Another thing to consider, as I had the same problem. I was way to heavy on Intel gear. I had huge mana but was hitting for terrible damage. I changed to some +Spell gear and my crits and base damage went way up. Barely even noticed the loss of mana because everything dieing faster.

I see some decent answers here so cannot add much to the thread , i went for spellpower above most other stats as i wanted to be a real glass cannon , the results of my lazy playstyle mean i hardly ever blink or run out of mana , in fact i use just a few of the spells we have available and have crits a lot of the time for +600 and a best hit of 769 so not doing so bad .

I tend to do a couple of frost bolts a Frost Nova and depending on the mobs health may even wait for them to come close and just hit them with my staff or wand or even a fire blast or a little arcane on them , i know i should either wand them or use a spell but i can constantly take out single targets without stopping and never get below 50% mana .

You can see from my Mage link what to me is reasonable gear although i have twinked my mage a little so for most its impossible to get as much damage as i can do , as others have said do not worry to much about dps as in the end it is all about surviving the lowest levels , if you do not run out of mana then if you find any spellpower gear it is well worth getting .

As has already been said it is the freezing/frostbite that helps create our damage spikes with all the crits we create , in fact my Mage can almost equal my Hunters steady dps damage yet is almost half her level.

edited to add some info
