Am I wrong to hate DnD?Follow

For some reason I can't seem to find whats so great about DnD (as a level 70 frost tank). On occasion when I have large pulls I'll use it, but more often than not I prefer to Icy Touch > Pestilence > Blood Boil > Howling Blast (by now Killing Machine has proced...if i definitely need the crit I use Deathchill.

Rinse, repeat, if necessary. It gets the job done. Even with AoE happy mages. I hold aggro.

For some reason whenever I use DnD it throws off my whole "rotation" and find myself tripping to get a groove going. Losing three runes at once instead of a few in a progressive order just seems like a waste.

At the moment I don't have improved DnD from unholy nor do I have the DnD glyph...personally I don't like the skill. Am I missing something? Should I reconsider? Or if what I'm doing is currently working is this fine?

Don't worry, I also hate DnD. I NEVER understand why some people (minus Blood Tanks), take 3/3 Morbidity.

I ONLY use it if I really think I'm gonna have a hard time keeping hate. Even then, if you can make each HB crit, your threat will be higher using that (I believe). And, UB isn't THAT far behind DnD, for NO runes.

15% damage to Death Coil is probably a good reason. Smiley: grin

I'm pretty apathetic about DnD. It's great in arena, but the graphic is really annoying.

I also think that it should spread from the caster, but that's just me being a lore nerd.

I dunno, when tanking in Unholy, DC provides such a small amount of my damage and threat for me to bother. I would really only take the talent as Blood.

One of my big problems with DnD is that it still causes a lot of lag for some users. For me, unless you have some seriously bad DpS, you shouldn't need much more AoE threat as a non-Blood.

I do use it every 30 seconds, usually. I just never reduce its CD.

Okay sweet! So I was spot on then. I was afraid I was being uber noob and missing something because I see EVERY dk I run with spam the thing. Thanks for the help ^.^

The only time I really use DnD in PvE is on the spider trash packs in Naxx.

Yeah its good on AoE pulls that will die before you get PS+IT>Pestilence up or when PS+IT will flat out kill something before you can pestilence.

I find it's largely situational, but I do use it. It's not a part of my rotation, but if I need some fast snap aggro at the start of an AoE pull, I'll toss it down. It can also be handy if you get unexpected adds. I do have 3/3 Morbidity and my reason for doing so was partly for the lower CD on DnD and partly for the increased damage on DC. Hell, a good talent is a good talent.

DnD has a very large threat modifier to it. with frost presence its like 5X threat for every point of damage.
It is up for a rather large amount of time, it works great for pulling groups.
Its a great tanking tool.
Good for getting a rogue out of hiding (if you dont have UB).
For dps its only good on really large groups, but then it shines. (trash pulls).

On bosses etc, it sucks.

The problem with DnD is that it has a horribly high rune cost. For a Frost Tank, it means you have to wait to use HB until the refresh. As Unholy, UB and the additional Disease damage is usually enough to keep hate. For frost, diseases and all the boosted damage from Icy Touch is usually enough (though you may need to drop DnD occasionally.

As a tank, I HATE when DpS DKs drop DnD. Because that essentially means I also have to, which seriously messes with my rotation. The damage from it is not worth it, in my opinion. All but Blood have better uses for those runes in AoE. And, Blood should just do their best to constantly switch between targets.

I'm levelling my DK as blood (so this is in regards to normal dungeons) and I find DnD to be a pretty handy way to start a pull when I'm tanking. It provides a nice amount of aoe threat right off the bat, which is nice when you have to deal with pug dps, especially given Blood's lack of aoe compared to the other trees. As for dps, I personally don't bother since I do more damage without it, but most of the pug dps DKs I run into use it pathologically, yet never seem to understand why the tank is then beating them on dps. /facepalm

In regards to the OP, I use DnD as a frost tank at 80 regularly. The trick is the timing so you don't throw off your rotation too much.

I generally put down a DnD just inside Death Grip range, wait 4 sec, then DG the first mob. Then rotation is IT PS Pest HB and go from there.

With DnD as Frost, you have three choices (well, there are more, but most descend so far into the realm of idiocy I won't mention them).

You put down diseases, spread them and DnD.

You throw it down, meaning you get 1 HB and a BB, BS or Pest.

You Disease, and spread (2DR), then ERW for all your runes back, lay it down and HB. (Possibly the highest group Aggro option, but also uses one of our best cooldowns early on for Trash).

Personally, I just try to maintain enough threat without it (running tight rotations, making sure to react as fast as possible, using all KM and Rime procs with HB if possible, etc.). If I HAVE to use it, I have to use it. But, I vastly prefer not to.

Any time I'm tanking I drop DnD as the first thing. Sure howling blast adds a lot of threat, or unholy blight. But HB requires setup (icy touch, pest, HB). This means at least 3 seconds before that HB actually goes off. And for UB, it does OK but requires 40 runic power, which you probably wont have at the beginning of a pull.

As a DPS, I will drop DnD on any pull of 3 or more (as Unholy). Do it yourself and note your DPS goes up, its a high damage skill if aoeing 3 or more mobs. Note I don't typically re-apply DnD in these situations, as after 10 seconds there are most likely not 3+ mobs anymore.
