FAQ and pre-raid thread seriously need to be updated, but I don't have the time to sit down for it and update it.
So, if anyone feels like it, please update (parts of) the stickies and PM it to me, I'll work it in and give you credit of course.

Just take a look at the warrior forum. The first sticky is: lvl 70 and Kara gear check. That's what I meant by outdated. At least yours are post wotlk.

Oh, nice necro too ;)

So it's really slow here too? I mean it was still in the middle of the first page.

In the Shaman forum, it would be 2nd from the top.

I've recently tried playing my baby paladin, and must say that the FAQ I looked up was loaded with acronyms, which means, within very few lines, I was completely lost and had absolutely no idea what they were talking about. (the Hunter FAQ DOES seem to do away with this excessive use of abbreviation, thankfully).

Maybe the way the FAQ is written isn't that obvious to everyone?

I, for example, have no interest in high-end raids nor arena. There have been times I've tried to get a bit of info in a more "basic" format, but had to face mountains of rather cryptic mathematical formulae and assumptions that the reader was in fact interested in raiding and arena.

Maybe what our FAQ needs at this point is a breakdown by levels? I think it might be safe to say that hunter class does change a bit at certain key levels (10 = getting your first pet, 40 = changing armor class, etc...).

I think the Hunter FAQ is great - actually, I think it's probably the very best of all the FAQs on Alla. But that doesn't mean it couldn't use some tweaking and improving.

Maybe (and quite understandably) part of the problem is that to create a FAQ you really need to have "been there, done that" and basically be level-capped. Which, of course, means you haven't actually BEEN in a position to require the assistance of a FAQ for quite a while. Being a teacher myself, I know how difficult it can be to cover material which seems so self-evident to you, but remains mysterious and elusive to the student.

I'm not excusing the "wuts teh best pet 4 kllng stuff?" posts. I believe Satan has reserved a very special place in Hell for people who post that sort of thing (I think it's in the condo next to where he and Chris live... near the luau pit).

Might some of the people who worked so hard on the existing FAQ consider a more "basic" version of it? Sort of a "Hunter 101... breakdown by level" approach? Maybe an approach that also takes into consideration those who play casually (the Hunter class appears to attract a lot of casual players, like myself)?

It's funny I was just thinking about how the hunter forums are usually very quite, probably because a lot of people are casual about their hunter. I'm 50/50, I'm taking my sweet time to hit 80 but want the best gear in the end.

After the first iteration, the FAQ has been a team effort of people on this forum. We'd love for you to write up or fix some of it and then post it for review. Aethien will then merge it with the current faq.

I'd like to put more work into it personally, but I don't have time at the moment. In July if nothing has been done I'll probably sit down and rewrite some of it, but June is extremely busy.

In response to the outbreak of questions once again... bumpage

I use the pre-raid thread weekly, and still try to keep it under my pillow. Question I have is which one gets updated most?

I want to update the GEM list. So that is in the Pre-Raid Thread. You are saying it might also go in the FaQ as it should be becuase questions that comes up with every Patch.

That raises another question; When do you use Epic Gems? The blue pre-raid gear or the epics after you get close to best in slot items? As a Jewelcrafter, I tend to put gems in sooner, as it seems I always have better gems than I do gear.

You want to update the Gem list? AWESOME, write it up and PM Aeth.

As for your gemming question, if you are a JC and aren't worried about selling them for cash, then use whatever is at your disposal. For me, I can not afford to put epics in any non-raid gear, the cost is just too high (or I would have to run a crap-ton of heroics to buy uncut ones).

Something to include in the gem section might be that you can buy uncut epic gems with honor--I had no idea, and ended up wasting a fair bit of gold on raw gems when I could have picked them up pretty much for free. Since VoA bosses give honor when killed, even for non-PvP players it's a resource to consider.

Buh, when did this happen?

I mean I knew I was hemorrhaging honor points thanks to wintergrasp itself, but never noticed getting honor for Arch/Em...

I don't know when it started--I think somewhere in between me quitting my hunter and starting to play my shaman--but the last few weeks I've been getting like 300 honor per boss kill in there. It's bizarre.

It has to be a bug... but then, maybe it isn't. I don't know. What I do know is that free honor is awesome! :D

I think this thread shows the sticky posts are ok but do need to be as simple as possible as they are a long read for anyone that struggles with english and is not always up to date , yes i know the hunter one is pretty good (some other classes need a full revamp) but i think the forums are pretty slow these days anyway.

All i usually see in most is hey i got XXX weapon or check my build which is of no interest to me at all , i have no 80,s more by choice than anything so the highest level posts also are of little interest but i do quickly glance at them.

As others have said i also would like to see some more interesting threads and more people reading the stickys then asking when they do not understand something as what is obvious to a long time player is not always so easy for a new player to understand . I even see old players being caught out by the multiple changes to classes that have been happening so even they should be checking out the stickys and someone that knows should be updating the stickys to mention those changes or am i living in a dream world.

I think you're grossly over-exaggerating the level of intelligence required to understand some of these concepts. Moreover, when a question is asked that can be answered verbatim by a portion of the sticky (more frequent than you realize), it simply proves the rule. I don't think anybody here would have a problem with a question like "So I read the sticky but this mechanic is a little confusing. Could you explain it better?" Compare that to "im a new hunter and what is best talent also pet"

Nobody denies the fact that the stickies aren't perfect, but the sheer level of information that is already in them and is often eschewed anyway by those who can't be ***** to do a little bit of research is astounding.

was what i am on about.

Not everyone has the ability to read and write correctly in english , not even all english? speaking americans ( yes i know i am attacking americans but the British are just as bad ) can do that so a little tolerance and guidance to new posters might just get some interesting posters coming along as i know quite a few people that lurk these forums that would never post because they do not want to be attacked as i have seen in so many posts .

Many new posters think in simple terms and i know without thinking do not make their posts interesting but the posts can be made interesting by other posters and not just a lets attack the newbie , with a little coaxing they can be good helpful posters in the future , not all i agree but this attitude of hey that poster writes bad english lets rate them down and attack them needs to be stopped for a better forum , or at least it would in my opinion.

I don't buy that logic.

Assuming your hypothetical person is as prevalent across this forum as you claim, if they understand English enough to ask a question that is already word-for-word answered in the sticky (which uses terms that the game itself uses no less; we're not using some pseudo-english when discussing this, and people know what Aimed Shot is because they can read the tooltip, not because of some magical instinct that tells them the pretty picture with the arrow on it is Aimed Shot), then they understand English enough to read the information that's already there and get the answer they need. There is no difference between these two concepts, reading and typing are two sides of the exact same mental process.

Furthermore, in most cases the people who persist in this continual state of lassez faire have even admitted of their own accord that they know they could do better, they just don't give a ****.

While the stickies are slightly outdated, they should allow for some to develop a research based mindset to find information. There are many different sources to go and check out these questions which are continuously updated, EJ being one of them.
