New Mage Leveling?Follow

I hate making these but this is a class I am completely clueless about.
I started Shadow Priest. PW:S is godly and completely ridiculous early on. I had a Priest remind me of how awesome it was when they cast it on me during a quest and it lasted the WHOLE duration vs constant mobs my level.

Then I went Retadin and well, that just owns anything in the way. I take on 4-7 mobs at a time and just smash them down.

I then made a Lock, which is -very- tough because of the squishy factor and so far, no ****************** buttons aside a single Healthstone. Really hard, but fun, but also opposing faction.

So I decided to pick up Mage and see how it goes. Got her to level 11 so far, lot of fun, but I am concerned with Talents.
I have tossed two into Fire Blast for when I get aggro having an instant spell more available, but I know Mage keeps changing, especially with all these patches.

My question(finally) is for leveling, is Ice still the way to go for control? I solo, not much for instances, and am debating which route to take. I see a lot of fire and arcane, but I don't know which way to go!

Right now I pop off a Frostbolt, then Arcane Missiles x2 and maybe a Fire Blast to end it. If aggro, I pop off Frost Nova, Fire Blast, Arcane Missiles, Fire Blast.

I think you need to learn the term of aggro. If you are soloing you are always having aggro from the mobs.

I recommend reading the greatest mage post ever for the talent advice.

Well I know aggro, I played FFXI for 4 years lol. I know the vast majority of everything MMO's have to offer.

As for the greatest mage post... only sticky is the new one :/

I meant when I get "ambushed" by a mob, not attacking it on purpose.

FFXI is not WoW and vice versa.

I played FFXI since 2004 and WoW since 2005 so, don't play that card.

And... many things are incredibly similar. So yeah, "card played". I'm fine in WoW in the majority of things, but talents are a bit difficult to pick up when varied classes have little in common. Melee to Pet to Caster is a huge jump.

How about a little more helpful, a little less prick? I asked a simple question because the sticky that people told me to find is not stickied that I see.

We could help you, but it seems you already know it all because you played another MMO. The correct term is *****, btw. Thank you and goodbye.

We try to avoid absolute hand-holding with talent builds. I am more than happy to help with questions, but why not go ahead and throw a build together on http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=o and link it here and we can critique it together talking about the positives and negatives of the various talents.

TGMPE doesn't specifically state which build to take, but Poldaran and myself have gone through and looked at every talent, discussed them, and even ranked/rated them in their raid/pvp/soloability underneath the talent.

Personally, the section that I liked the best about the old greatest Mage post ever was the talent build section. The diversity and variety of builds to apply to various situations was what made it Great to me. I never really copied straight across, I did my builds as I leveled, but it was great to see so many possibilities laid out and discussed for their pros and cons and the situations they were good for. It really helped me understand Mage better.

As for leveling, I like frost better, but that's my opinion. Pick up 5/5 imp frostbolt, and 3/3 frostbite. Try to stay at range as much as possible. You'll still die a lot until you hit level 30. If you go up the frost tree, you can pick up Ice Barrier at level 41. It's the Mage version of the shield spell, and you stop dying as long as you don't get too cocky.

Here's my build so far. This has been great for leveling so far:

Good Luck!

Edit: The point in Shattered Barrier was a mistake, but I haven't bothered re-specing to pull it out yet.

I can give the basics of frost talents quite easily if that is what you want.

First is get that frostbolt hitting faster then pick anything that does more damage or that will freeze mobs , frozen mobs cannot attack you so is a great breathing space to either run or blink back to a safer spot to carry on frostbolting them , my talents probably could be better but work very well for me ( check out my mage ) a mage does take some levels to get going but is not that hard as you will find out and if you die a lot you are doing it wrong .

when I first leveled mage I was fire till 50 or so and then i got annoyed with it and went to arcane and have been loving that ever since. IMHO arcane can be a rather nice raidind, pvp, dps spec depending on what you want to do. My advice to you though, would be pick a spec to play and learn. I have played all three specs myself and in all honesty I hate frost. Learning a class is kinda like trial and error, pick talents based on what you want to do. Once you hit 80 there may be different aspects of mage to learn so dont be surprised. You then go into pvp specs, raiding specs, and IMHO its all about player preference. I have seen some rather good fire, frost, and arcane mages in both pvp and pve. Leveling as a mage is rather fun cause you can kill things from range and if needed you can AE if you get to many and still chance surviving. Pick what you think is fun.
